U.S. troops seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday, a major escalation that the Venezuelan government called "international piracy." We speak with New York University professor Alejandro Velasco about the Trump administration's intentions in the country, which has the world's largest known oil reserves. Though the Pentagon has claimed the conflict is aimed at combating narcoterrorism, Velasco says the violence is actually an effort "to get rid of leftist governments in the region."

(64,361 posts)It's all in service to oligarchy.
The real problem with the world's oligarchs are policies ie: progressive universal health care, climate change provisions, and social or domestic leaning administrations around the world. *rump wants right wing autocrat dictator types who don't really care about their people. This is not to say the left doesn't have autocrats but the global oligarchs control the world's wealth and dominate its' governments, they're the ones most shaping present day reality.
The world's oligarchs want to remain the world's oligarchs, and they don't really care so much about any particular nation, its' laws, international law or democracy, they're above it all.
The global oligarchs are "citizens of the world" borderless and basically looking out for themselves, and it doesn't make any difference what industry they dominate or own, for profit "health" insurance, big pharma, the corporate media, the military industrial complex, the AI world, Gaza grade surveillance corporations; which are expanding in the U.S. or the fossil fuel industry: pushing for the end times.
They all want the same thing money and power, and there will never be an enlightened world so long as they dominate it.
That's why they can now buy gold or platinum *rump cards for a million dollars or more and avoid some U.S. taxes.
Greed, grift, and organized crime trying to take over the world while leaving the 99% behind to an increasingly dystopian reality.
That's the way I see it.
