Rachel Maddow runs through the litany of excuses and justifications the Trump administration has presented to explain the military invasion of Venezuela, and points out that none of what has been floated holds up under scrutiny.

Every principle the Trump administration claims to be defending comes with examples of the administration not caring at all about that principle. Even the popular idea that it was all for oil doesn't really make sense upon closer examination. He wants to break the perceived connection between public legitimacy for military action and the use of the United States military.

He wants the ability to use the U.S. military with the consent of no one.

And so we are seeing him use the U.S. military in the Middle East, and also in Nigeria, and also in Iran, and also now in the Caribbean, and the Pacific, and in South America, and in Los Angeles, and in Portland, and in Chicago, and in Washington.
