Labor unions 'challenge the oligarchy:' Thom Hartmann on how unions 'stand up for democracy' - Velshi - MS NOW

The labor movement has been at the forefront of social change for much of American history. Unions and labor leaders have been instrumental in many political movements that helped to shape the society we live in today.

“Not only can labor challenge the oligarchy, they can challenge the corporate bosses,” author Thom Hartmann tells Ali Velshi. “They also stand up for democracy… Unions are democracy in the workplace.” - Aired on 02/01/2026.

Are enjoyed by union members and non members. A decent pay for a day’s work is not what the oligarchy wants..they want you to work for less and own you on n off the clock. I’m a proud retired Union member and my training and job opportunities came by qualifying whether male, female, older younger..equal opportunity and an example of the democratic principles. We all had a voice and our votes counted. Best thing I ever did was to get active and participate in the charities and issues that mattered at the time..a great experience

So unfortunately, they could and still do fire employees for whatever reason they choose - and they've recently been on quite a spree, sending jobs to India - so no one's job is safe.
