Related: About this forumLet's talk about Jack Smith's hearing and how everybody got what they wanted.... - Belle of the Ranch
Well, howdy there Internet people. It's Belle again. So, today we're going to talk about the Jack Smith hearing and how everybody got what they wanted.
It was an almost five-hour session for the first public hearing for former special counsel Jack Smith since he left office. It was a spectacle designed for political talking points. Republicans wanted to focus on going after Cassidy Hutchinson and the fact that some of their phone metadata was obtained while Democrats wanted to get sound bites from Smith about Trump.
Everybody got what they wanted. Republicans to a lesser degree because they were questioning somebody who has a lot of experience. The two most compelling lines for Democrats was a blunt assessment from Smith, "Our investigation revealed that Donald Trump is the person who caused Jan 6. It was foreseeable to him and that he sought to exploit the violence." Rather than accept his defeat in the 2020 election, President Trump engaged in a criminal scheme to overturn the results and prevent the lawful transfer of power. Pretty much says it all. I'd expect to hear those quotes over and over again.
For Republicans who, for some almost inexplicable reason, have become fixated on Cassidy Hutchinson. They got their sound bite once it had been established that Hutchinson got a lot of her information secondhand and Representative Jordan declared, "That says it all. you were still considering putting her on the witness stand because you had to get President Trump. The context surrounding that soundbite undercuts it a little bit, but I'd imagine it will get a lot of play anyway.
Democrats got another win with Smith saying, "Some of the most powerful witnesses were witnesses who in fact were fellow Republicans who had voted for Donald Trump, who had campaigned for him and who wanted him to win the election.
Republicans continually hammered on the collection of phone metadata, which is kind of common practice to determine the scope of a conspiracy. But they threw up enough smoke and mirrors to keep their base under the belief that something was amiss.
Smith commented on the pardons Trump gave those involved with January 6th. "I do not understand why you would mass pardon people who assaulted police officers. I don't get it. I never will."
When it comes to his own future, Smith indicated he believes he could be indicted, saying, "I believe they will do everything in their power to do that because they have been ordered to by the president."
Trump was actually posting on social media that day, saying, "Jack Smith is a deranged animal who shouldn't be allowed to practice law. If he were a Republican, his license would be taken away from him and far worse. Hopefully, the attorney general is looking at what he's done, including some of the crooked and corrupt witnesses that he was attempting to use in his case against me. The whole thing was a Democrat scam. A big price should be paid by them.
At the end of the hearing, Republicans and Democrats alike got what they wanted most, sound bites. But the country didn't get what it needed, closure.
Anyway, it's just a thought. Y'all have a good day.

Uggh. This pisses me off. Can our side NEVER take a win before giving half of it away to MAGA? (Yeah, I know her point, but it still PISSES ME OFF!)
