He'd get riled up on the air, and as one who watched and enjoyed his schtick every night, and one who felt I had to try never to get riled up on the air or personally invested in a story, I LOVED what Olbermann did. And I LOVED how he did it. And maybe part of his appeal was that he was the only one REALLY speaking his mind and using noticeably sharper elbows the way others lower down the broadcast news food chain didn't feel free to do, and it was a really refreshing change. He was out there to rattle cages (maybe because his agent had told him they weren't picking up his contract

This takes me to a moment in one of my favorite movies EVER: "Network" by Paddy Chayefsky. It starred Peter Finch, William Holden, AND Faye Dunaway as the ruthless network TV programming chief - a calculating woman who defended her network anchorman, Mr. "I'm MAD as HELL and I'm NOT gonna take it anymore!" when the rest of the network elders thought he'd flipped out on the air and need to be removed.

Maybe Keith Olbermann grew louder and more in-yer-face to authority figures toward the end of his tenure because he knew his days on MSNBC were numbered. Maybe he figured he might as well just go out with a bang.
