Anyone trying to base our government or its laws on some book of mythology is promoting a perversion of the American ideal. I don‘t care if it‘s the King James translation of the ancient Greek bible, the Koran, the Book of Mormon or Santería. Get down on your knees and worship Satan every night, for all I care. It‘s all the same to me—no deity gave you the right to force it on me, and don‘t try to force it into the laws of our country, either. That is exactly what the Founders wanted to avoid.

When I was in the earliest grades we used to say a school prayer with the pledge. It was pretty generic, all I remember was that it ended with "our parents, our teachers and our country." But when I was still in elementary school, that was replaced with "a moment of silence" - when kids could pray if they wanted. Then that soon disappeared and nobody missed it.

Now we have these right-wingers who want to bring the 10 Commandments into the public schools. I grew up in a pretty diverse community and we never discussed religion in school. Looking back, I had no idea what religion anyone was, and it was none of my business what anyone did at home. We need more Mayor Petes and eliminate those like Mike Johnson who want to force their beliefs on the rest of this diverse country.
