Is Trump Ending Birthright Citizenship?

The Supreme Court will hear a case that could redefine the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of birthright citizenship, a protection created after the Civil War to ensure that formerly enslaved people and their children would be recognized as full citizens. For more than a century, the rule has been clear. If you are born in the United States, you are an American, a principle the Court affirmed in 1898 in United States v Wong Kim Ark. Now the Court will review Donald Trump’s executive order that seeks to end birthright citizenship for certain children born here, raising the question of whether a president can undo a constitutional promise without an amendment or action from Congress. The outcome will determine whether citizenship remains automatic and secure or becomes conditional based on a child’s parentage. It could place millions in legal uncertainty or reaffirm a fundamental belief that America does not create second class children.

Not every Hispanic or African or Asian immigrant illegally crossed the border by climbing a fence or crossing the Rio Grande. Are they going to take away birthright citizenship only from children of people who entered illegally? Sounds as though their approach is a blanket end. Trump wants white Europeans and South Africans to migrate here. Will their children have birthright citizenship? Will those immigrants now have to obtain citizenship here before their children can get birthright citizenship?
