Minneapolis schools cancel classes after Border Patrol clash disrupts dismissal at Roosevelt

(MPR News) Minneapolis Public Schools on Wednesday canceled classes district-wide for the remainder of the week “due to safety concerns,” following the killing of a woman Wednesday by an ICE agent. The district said it was acting “out of an abundance of caution.” The move came after officials at Roosevelt High School said armed U.S. Border Patrol officers came on school property during dismissal Wednesday and began tackling people, handcuffed two staff members and released chemical weapons on bystanders.

Jeffries calls Noem a liar: 'No evidence' to justify Minneapolis ICE shooting

(The Hill) House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Wednesday slammed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem over the fatal shooting of a woman by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minneapolis. “There’s no evidence that has been presented to justify the shooting of an unarmed woman in Minneapolis. The so-called Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has zero credibility,” Jeffries told The Hill’s sister network NewsNation. “She’s a stone-cold liar. We’ve got to make sure that the rogue ICE agent who pulled the trigger resulting in the death of an American citizen is criminally investigated to the full extent of the law,” he added.

Congressman Dan Goldman: "It was outright murder".

(Rep. Dan Goldman) "Invading our cities, using excessive force, lawlessly, with new agents, without proper training, and sadly this was not unexpected. But it was egregious. It was an outright murder. And the fact that the administration is trying to defend the ICE officer ... the fact that they are arguing that somehow this is domestic terrorism, much less an attack on ICE, is preposterous."

Witness reveals disturbing new details about ICE shooting: 'They seemed like children'

(Raw Story) A witness who saw an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shoot a woman dead in South Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Wednesday morning revealed disturbing new details about the event in an interview with CNN. "They seemed like children," Heller said. "They seem like untrained people. And so that agent was obviously spooked because he had just killed someone, and it was very obvious to everyone who had witnessed it all that she would not make it."

Almost anyone can be an ICE agent now. That's a problem.

(USA Today) Traditionally, ICE recruits deploy after a four-month training course covering immigration and constitutional law, firearms and driving. But these protocols are changing amid a historic deportation surge and scramble to hire officers. Authorities have also cut academy time for recruits without prior law enforcement experience, from 16 to eight weeks. Among other changes, ICE scrapped a requirement that recruits complete a five-week basic Spanish course, even though at least two-thirds of the 11 million unauthorized immigrants in the United States are from Spanish-speaking countries.

Rep. Kelly announces plans to impeach Secretary Kristi Noem

(Rep. Robin Kelly) Today, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) announced plans to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem following the fatal shooting by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. “Secretary Kristi Noem is an incompetent leader, a disgrace to our democracy, and I am impeaching her for obstruction of justice, violation of public trust, and self-dealing. Secretary Noem wreaked havoc in the Chicagoland area, and now, her rogue ICE agents have unleashed that same destruction in Minneapolis, fatally shooting Renee Nicole Good,” said Rep. Kelly.

House to vote on renewing ACA subsidies as a potential deal takes shape in the Senate

(NPR) Against the wishes of House Speaker Mike Johnson, the House of Representatives is set to vote Thursday on a measure that would renew enhanced health insurance subsidies that expired at the end of last year. The three-year extension is expected to pass the House, but it may not go far in the Senate, where a similar measure failed in December. A bipartisan group of senators, however, say they are close to a deal on a compromise bill for the Affordable Care Act subsidies.

RFK Jr. Just Flipped the Food Pyramid to Create a Funnel of Performative Masculinity

(Mother Jones) New dietary guidelines announced Wednesday by Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr. crank up the dials on red meat and full-fat dairy. The now-inverted food pyramid prominently features a steak, an entire chicken, and whole milk up top, relegating carbs to the bottom point—minor real estate compared to the portion they occupied before. Untethered from scientific research, the new recommendations seem more aligned with a burgeoning source of dietary advice: hypermasculine influencers.

(Newsweek) Darren Michael, an associate professor of acting and directing at Austin Peay State University (APSU) in Tennessee, has resumed his post following his removal over a social media post related to Charlie Kirk last fall, the university told Newsweek in an email.
