Louisville, KY, smells like mildew - and no one knows why

There's a bad smell in parts of the Louisville, Kentucky, area but nobody knows where it's coming from.

Media reports say city crews have been trying for nearly a week to pin down the odor that smells like mildew, but so far they've had no luck.

Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District spokesman Tom Nord says the agency is doing its best to track the odor. Engineering manager Matt King says crews are driving around the city and searching the old-fashion way: with their noses.

Nord says dozens of people have called from different areas of the city that aren't normally associated with bad smells.

Dumb Criminals: Guy arrested for 9th DUI wearing "I do dumb things" shirt

The Texas man was initially pulled over and charged for the incident in November, but was arrested on a warrant on Thursday. Bell County officials reviewing the case ended up bumping the charge up to a felony after realizing that Gutierrez already had more than three DWI convictions, according to KBTX.

Police had a “good laugh” about his choice of attire, according to KCEN.

Man hides marijuana in a container marked "Not Weed"

A 21-year-old Lincoln man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and cited for possession of less than an ounce of marijuana after deputies found a 16-ounce container labeled "Not Weed" under the front passenger's seat.

Lancaster County Sheriff's deputies stopped the driver near Eighth and K streets about 9 p.m. Saturday.

During a search, the sheriff's office found the plastic sour cream container with 11.4 grams of marijuana. The driver said it belonged to him and was cited.

Three passengers in the car were not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, the sheriff's office said.

@_FloridaMan calls 911 and reports fake shooting - just to test police response time

Authorities say a Martin County man is accused of calling 911 and reporting a fake crime to check police response time.

Police arrested 19-year-old Christopher James Smith of Hobe Sound, Fla., saying he called 911 on Tuesday night to report a shooting.

Responding officers found no signs of a shooting. But Smith approached an officer to ask why she was there.

The Palm Beach Post reports Smith hung up while the dispatcher was trying to get more information.

Fr. Ted Hesburgh, longtime Notre Dame president, dies at 97

The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who transformed the University of Notre Dame into a school known almost as much for academics as football and who championed human rights around the globe, has died. He was 97.

University spokesman Paul Browne told The Associated Press that Hesburgh died on campus Thursday night.

Hesburgh spent 35 years at the Notre Dame helm, earning a reputation as one of the nation's top Catholic educators. But the man known simply as Father Ted to the thousands who attended the school while he was president from 1952 to 1987 was perhaps even more recognized for his work around the world on issues such as civil rights, immigration, peaceful uses of nuclear energy and Third World development.

That work often took him far from campus — including Washington, Moscow and El Salvador — as he advised popes and presidents, at times challenging their policies. His aim was constant: Better people's lives.

Film profiles bishop who healed Detroit after 1967 riots

Gumbleton, known for his liberal stands on issues such as gay rights and nuclear proliferation, said he had to help local parishes navigate racial issues as well as changes within the church in the years following Vatican II.

“After the 1967 riot, the church went through a lot of dramatic changes. It had a lot to do with leadership style,” Gumbleton said. “I wanted to make sure we carried out the mandate to welcome all people.”

Gumbleton served as pastor of many parishes, including St. Aloysius, Holy Ghost and St. Leo’s, until his retirement as auxiliary bishop in 2006. He remains active as a priest.

Some consider Gumbleton a hero for his work uniting black and white parishes, and that’s what prompted local filmmaker Jasmine Rivera to document the bishop’s life.

Norwegian Muslims to protect Jews at Oslo synagogue

The group of Norwegian Muslims will form a human "peace ring" around a synagogue in Oslo, according to a Facebook page for the event.

"We think that after the terrorist attacks in Copenhagen, it is the perfect time for us Muslims to distance ourselves from the harassment of Jews that is happening," 17-year-old organizer Hajrad Arshad told the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) in an interview cited by The Local Norway.

...

Ervin Kohn, the leader of Oslo’s Jewish community, said he welcomed the group's initiative.

"What they are communicating is that if anyone wants to do anything against Jews in Norway, 'they have to go through us first,' and I think that is very positive," Kohn said, according to The Local.
