WAUSAU - Bernie Sanders is confident that he can make tuition free at public colleges, but in an interview with USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, he offered few specifics about how that plan would work or get bipartisan support.

In the interview, held immediately before the rally, Sanders said he would work early in his presidency to provide students with free tuition at the country’s public colleges and universities. The money to do that, he said, would come from taxing Wall Street.

Sanders has offered legislation to that end — the College for All Act — which would provide $47 billion to pay for tuition at four-year public universities. That amount would cover roughly 67 percent of yearly tuition, while states would be on the line for 33 percent.

But the bill has not moved since it was introduced last May.

Asked how he would get Republicans in Congress and state lawmakers such as Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker to go along with the measure, Sanders responded with a general statement about politics.

“The way you convince anybody is when the majority of people want it,” Sanders said. “Politicians — whether Republicans or Democrats, liberals or conservatives — respond to what people want.”

The scene in Kathleen Falk's living room on Saturday was a veritable who's who of Democratic women in Madison.

State and county elected officials, doctors, lawyers and political aficionados gathered at the former Dane County executive and two-time gubernatorial candidate's home to hear Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards speak in support of Hillary Clinton.

Planned Parenthood, in its first-ever presidential primary endorsement, is backing the former secretary of state over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. Richards was in Madison over the weekend working to energize supporters and voters to support Clinton in Wisconsin's April 5 primary election.

"This is the big one," Richards said. "This is a woman who has been standing for women her entire life."

Commending women who serve as elected officials, Richards said, it's still not easy to be a woman in office.

"This is sort of the pinnacle of everything we’ve fought for all our lives," she said.

Nicole Bell, whose fiancé, Sean Bell, became a symbol of tensions between black communities and the police after he was shot and killed by New York officers on the morning of their wedding day, has endorsed Hillary Clinton two weeks before the New York primary.

“Nine years ago, I lost my fiancé, Sean Bell, in a police-involved shooting, and unfortunately, there are too many families with stories like mine,” Ms. Bell said in a statement provided Saturday to The New York Times.

Mrs. Clinton, she said, “understands that we need reforms that can be felt on our streets and in our communities and that she “will stand up to the gun lobby, work to end racial profiling, and make key investments to ensure that law enforcement officials have adequate training.”

In 2006, plainclothes and undercover police officers fired into Mr. Bell’s car 50 times, killing him and wounding two of his friends; the men were leaving a strip club in Queens where Mr. Bell had celebrated his bachelor party. The shooting rocked the city and drew responses from civil rights activists and elected officials, including Mrs. Clinton, who was a senator representing New York at the time.

Mr. Bell and his friends were not armed. The three detectives charged in the shooting were acquitted on all counts..........

“Hillary gets it,” Ms. Bell said. “Nine years ago, Hillary Clinton was there for me, and today, I’m with her.”

.......So what does that say about appropriate behavior on the part of her rival? Two things, I’d argue.

First, the Sanders campaign needs to stop feeding the right-wing disinformation machine. Engaging in innuendo suggesting, without evidence, that Clinton is corrupt is, at this point, basically campaigning on behalf of the RNC. If Sanders really believes, as he says, that it’s all-important to keep the White House out of Republican hands, he should stop all that – and tell his staff to stop it too.

Second, it’s time for Sanders to engage in some citizenship. The presidency isn’t the only office on the line; down-ballot races for the Senate and even the House are going to be crucial. Clinton has been raising money for other races; Sanders hasn’t, and is still being evasive on whether he will ever do so. Not acceptable.

Oh, and the Sanders campaign is saying that it will try to flip superdelegates even if it loses the unpledged delegates and the popular vote. Remember when evil Hillary was going to use superdelegates to steal the nomination? Double standards aside, what makes the campaign think that he will get any backing from a party he refuses to lift a finger to help?

It’s important to realize that there are some real conflicts of interest here. For Sanders campaign staff, and also for anyone who has been backing his insurgency, it’s been one heck of a ride, and they would understandably like it to go on as long as possible. But we’ve now reached the point where what’s fun for the campaign isn’t at all the same as what’s good for America.

Sanders doesn’t need to drop out, but he needs to start acting responsibly.
