Governor Cuomo Directs MTA to Move Forward with System-wide Shutdown

The MTA has been directed by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to begin an orderly shutdown and suspension of all subway, bus and commuter railroad service at 7 p.m. Sunday. The decision was made to protect customers, employees and equipment from the wrath of Hurricane Sandy as the strong storm continues its march up the east coast.

MTA Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota announced that service on NYC Transit subways will be curtailed beginning at 7 p.m., and the bus network within the following two hours. Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad will start their final trains by 7 p.m. from terminal locations. Subway and rail road stations will be closed after the last trains pass through stations. Outbound Access-A-Ride trips are being scheduled only until 12 p.m. today, and return trips will continue until 5 p.m. Any previously scheduled trips after that time, including subscription trips, are canceled. Customers are advised to adjust their plans and travel early in the day as possible and not wait until the last train or bus. Anyone who does not leave for their destination before 7 p.m. runs the risk of being stranded when service is suspended.

The MTA Hurricane Plan calls for suspending service hours before the approach of winds of 39 mph and higher. That gives MTA crews time to prepare rail and subway cars, buses, tunnels, yards and buildings for the storm, then return to safety. Winds of 39 mph and higher are predicted to reach the metropolitan region during the predawn hours Monday. The MTA has been preparing to suspend service for days by readying recovery equipment, clearing drainage areas, moving vehicles from low-lying areas at bus depots and rail yards and sealing some tunnel access points.

The duration of the service suspension is unknown, and there is no timetable for restoration. Service will be restored only when it is safe to do so, after careful inspections of all equipment and tracks. Even with minimal damage this is expected to be a lengthy process. Customers and the media should monitor this website or call 511 for the most current service information.

Here's hoping we don't "need" Ohio

MSNBC reported earlier that they don't even start to count the absentee & provisional ballots for DAYS after the election... I do not trust the schemers in charge for a nano-second, let alone weeks..

I hope Obama can lock it up so that Ohio's votes are just icing on the cake, and they can take their sweet time and all their cheating will be for nothing..

Voter registration would be opt OUT not opt IN..everyone registered as a VOTER..not as a republican or a democrat or anything else. If people wanted to be recognized as a party member that's up to them.

The STATE should not know the party affiliation

At 18 (or when naturalized), everyone gets their voter ID card...any 2nd ID verifies it.

States can run "their" elections anyway they want, BUT

elections with national consequences are standardized.. a 5 x 7 card with only THREE choices..president..senate ,,house

the only address verification double check would be for house, and a cell-phone bill should verify the house you live in and the street (for proper district)..

If states want to print 10 page ballots, let them, but for people who just want the "express vote" that does not require 10 hours in line, a card and a sharpie to mark 3 (maximum) marks, should speed things up considerably..and they are re-countable

I would also like to see donations come ONLY from the state/district of the candidates (for congress)...and for each party to have their own official channel on tv where they could voice their ideas..but NO defaming their opponents.

If their ideas are without merit, so be it.

The press (minus all that juicy ad money) might just have to get back to actually researching issues to draw viewers.

Of course it goes without saying, that I would like to see public financing, with all PAC money GONE..

I say "Hah"..

This has the grimy fingerprints of Karl Rove all over it.

I have read recently that he and some of his henchmen have "started" polling companies.

He has enough clout to muddy the waters....and to get his polls included in with the others, when media reports & averages the polls

Rove is an evil-genius when it comes to stuff like this.

We USED to be able to know what the exit polls were, so we could convince ourselves that the count was relatively accurate, and Rove, Co (and his complicit media pals) managed to get that stopped

Recounts are little more than re-adding "quirky" counts

Polls that swing wildly and are questionable at best, are just the latest wrinkle to get people to have no way to evaluate anything.

Our "elections" are unspeakably strange, and have been for a long time.

For all the money and effort that gets poured into them , you'd think that some attention to correcting the methodology . Without a "blow-out", are we ever realy sure that the real winner gets to serve?

Flashback: Thanksgiving 2000

My daughter in-law & son visited us, and of course the "background-music" of that time was the incessant Gore V Bush razzamatazz, 24-7. She was a Bush voter (our son was a Gore voter...as were my husband and myself.

It was a stressful Thanksgiving, what with the snarky comments and dirty looks (from her, because she was being "picked on"..)

She is now a proud and newly registered DEMOCRAT.. She admitted to our son that she did vote for Obama in 08 after having voted TWICE for that cretin, Bush.

She is born & raised in Salt Lake City, a Mormon...and a "mitt-hater".

She calls him the "Freaky-Phony".

Her family still there are new Dem recruits too ( although their votes will be hopelessly drowned out)

What he's been trying to accomplish, takes TIME..

People don't show up at their home-site and harangue the builder/contractor for being slow to get on with the painting & interior-decorating.. Foundation first, then the "guts" (wiring, plumbing, framing, roof, flooring etc).. There is a progression to things, and only a small child cannot understand how things work.

I remember when our son was 4 and I was pregnant. Every morning, he ran into our room to see if the baby was there yet. He could not wrap his young brain around the fact that 9 months was a very long time.

The plan for the future is the same as it was in 2007, when the president was running for his first term.. CLEAN UP THE MESS. A mess as big as the one we are in, takes time.

Anyone who has ever been in debt understands how it works. Just "deciding" to work on paying down debt, is not enough. Every month SOMETHING will some along to thwart your best plans, and even end up adding to the debt sometimes.

A promise/plan/hope is just that... a basic framework to follow and aim for, but real-life (aka recalcitrant congressional saboteurs) can cause the best of intentions to remain unrealized.
