Trump's new cap

Tip of the hat to DUer Guy Whitey Corngood!

October 10, 2016

A less-unhinged performance means he's still in.

And that's great news for Hillary!

Trump is still in to lose the presidency to Clinton.

Still in to force down-ticket Republicans into an impossible choice -- support Trump and go down with the ship, or repudiate Trump and incur teahadist wrath.

Still in to keep the media focused on Trump's failings, past, current, and yet to be revealed.

Still in to waste Republican money.

Still in to provide white-hot motivation for Democratic voters who can't wait to vote against this asshole.

Still in to ruin Mike Pence's political career as long as he stays chained to this wrecking ball.

If the rumors about Pence dropping out turn out to be true, there may be an opening for the RNC to replace the whole ticket -- thus incurring internecine warfare within the Republican party.

Every path forward looks like a win.

The Mexican peso says Trump didn't win debate

Financial markets wasted no time in giving their verdict on the first U.S. presidential debate: Donald Trump didn't do well.

As Trump and Hillary Clinton sparred on live TV, one key financial barometer of the Republican nominee's prospects started moving sharply: the Mexican peso soared more than 2% against the dollar.

In recent weeks, the Mexican currency has been moving in the opposite direction to Trump's poll numbers. As they have improved, the peso has dropped, hitting an all-time low against the dollar ahead of Monday night's debate.

Its sudden leap during the debate was a clear reaction to Trump's performance, according to Ihab Salib, head of international fixed income at Federated Investors. A CNN/ORC poll of debate watchers released after the event found 62% felt Clinton won compared with 27% for Trump.

That was a good old-fashioned ass-whuppin'

She was so great -- loved her Happy Warrior swagger, command of the facts, and direct appeal to the best in us.

Congratulations, Madame President.

If Hillary wins Georgia, I'll eat my neighbor's Confederate flag*

It's going to take a lotta lotta work to win Georgia. Clinton will need huge Dem turnout in non-suburban Atlanta (mainly Fulton, DeKalb, and Clayton counties), as well as Athens, Savannah, and the scattered "blue dots" around the state. There is a lot of work to be done registering likely Democratic voters, and of course overcoming the standard vote suppression tactics and the potential problems with electronic voting machines (/tinfoilhat). AND we're going to need a lot of the suburban "Security Moms" and a good chunk of the few moderate Republicans left in this state to cast a vote for sanity this time around.

Don't forget, a somewhat facetious overview of large-ish cities in the U.S. rated Atlanta America's most redneck city. (But Atlanta is also regarded as a "Black Mecca.&quot The problem is the rest of the state.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but I'm saying we should certainly not count Georgia in the Win column just yet.

By the way, last time I checked, it's still August.

* Disclaimer: I don't actually have a neighbor with a Confederate flag any more -- fortunately those assholes moved out of the neighborhood a few years back.

"Unconventional" - Paris Review comic about the 1968 Dem convention

by Nathan Gelgud.

The series is worth a look -- high level, and more of a "look" than a "read," but entertaining and, for me at least, informative. It's up to five installments now, with more on the way.

White Boy Privilege

This poem by a 14-year-old young man from Atlanta has gone viral, so chances are you've already seen it elsewhere -- but if not, check it out. I think it's a powerful and honest statement from a very thoughtful eighth-grader.
