I was in the middle of watching the press conference at the White House

when something came up and I put the show on pause. About an hour later I went back to hear the rest of the press conference. The frozen picture on my TV set suddenly gave me a feeling of hope that I have not had about the state of world affairs for a long time.

There were two of the world's most powerful leaders, their faces frozen in time (well at least an hour), and it suddenly gave me a feeling of hope for our future. The two powerful leaders were a female prime minister and and African American male President. This in itself does not mean that all is well with the world, but at least it shows that we (the world community) can change if we just manage to keep electing the right people for the job.

I am not very knowledgeable about the different groups that make up the Islam religion.

I do know that the largest groups are the Shia and Sunni. What I do not understand is the hatred that seems to divide them,

I can think of the same type of animosity between catholics and protestants which has also been very violent, Why do these groups, the sunni and shia, hate each other so much and does anyone see an end to the violence.

I was very disappointed when I read this article

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2013/dec/07/secret-memo-blairites-labour-election-alastair-campbell-alan-milburn-ed-miliband

However I am not as up to date on UK politics as many other members of DU and would be interested in any comments.

I have not seen the video but I read the statement a little differently.

I took it to mean that any innocent young black male could be the victim of such violence merely because of the color of his skin. It is the same feeling I got when I heard about the plane that crashed in SFO. My son had flown in to that airport from Seoul a few days earlier and I literally felt sick knowing that had that happened three days earlier he would have been in danger.

If Zimmerman racially profiled Trayvon before killing him and then was literally given a "get out of jail free" card because his victim was a young black male wearing a hoodie, then it makes sense for all black males to think "yes, that could have been me". The state of Florid has (IMHO) just legalized the right to kill any black citizen, because they are black. What happened to that blindfolded lady with the scales, symbolizing that we live in a country where justice is blind.

If anyone has any doubts about how this law disproportionally affects blacks, look at what happened to Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville, when she fired a warning shot to get an abusive spouse to leave her property. She did not even aim the gun at him but she got twenty years in jail. She was a young black female with no criminal record dealing with an abusive husband and unless I am missing some important details, why was she not protected by this law.

The moral of this saga, at least to me, is if you are black and live in Florida, be afraid, be very afraid. You are living in a state that has legalized year round hunting season on all black people with just one caveat, it cannot be used as a defense by the any black people.

Here is a link to a petition that I started on Move ON .

If I can get 50 signatures, they will sent it out to another one thousand email addresses. So please take a few minutes to visit the site and if you agree with me, please sign it and send it to at least two other people.

I want this man to know that women are not powerless and we will fight back. Please join me and sign the petition. Thanks to all those that have already done so.

Here is a post that I posted in the general discussion group

but Mnemosyne suggested I post it in a women's group as well.

I hope you can take the time to read it and sign it. Thanks.

This is a post that I posted a couple of days ago that I started on Move On Petitions.

So far it has only got six signatures and that is understandable because there are so many worthy causes out there, but I would really appreciate it if any of you could find the time to to to the site and sign the petition and if possible, send it to a couple of friends to get the count higher..

It came to me as a way to deal with the rage and hatred that was consuming me after I found out that a general had thrown out the sentence of an officer that had been found guilty of raping a women in his house. The general,'s rational was that she could have gotten a ride home after the party but felt comfortable enough to spend the night as she apparently knew the hosts and the man that had assaulted her was a happily married man and a good officer.

So please, just take a minute and to to the site and sign my petition

I just originated a petition at http://petitions.moveon.org/create_finished.html?petition_id=43959

I was visiting their site today and they have make it really easy to start one. I have been so irritated the the outrageous behavior of the general who overturned the verdict of an officer found guilty of sexual assault, I thought I would try to add a voice to let him know that it is not over.

Here is a copy of my petition, and if just one or two people would go over there and sign it I would be so very grateful.

http://petitions.moveon.org/create_finished.html?petition_id=43959
Subject: Dishonorable Discharge for Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin.

Hi,

General Franklin's behavior is so outrageous that it boggles the mind. However, this kind of action will happen over and over unless we make people like him accountable. Enough is enough, I want this type of person out of uniform. He is not fit to wear it.

That's why I created a petition to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel..

Will you sign this petition? Click here:

Thanks!

I read this on Fark, it was a winner in some kind of twitter contest I think.

CNN lost all bowel control on Monday, we're down to the really squeaky, empty farts now.
