PITTSFIELD -- James MacGregor Burns, the renowned political scientist, historian and author of more than 20 books including biographies on Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, died Tuesday morning at his home in Williamstown. He was 95.

Burns died peacefully in his sleep, according to his son, Stewart Burns of North Adams.

A 1939 Williams College graduate, Burns is the college’s Woodrow Wilson Professor of Government Emeritus. He taught political science at Williams from 1947 until his retirement in 1986.

Stewart Burns said his father "lived a full life" and was active both physically and mentally until November 2011, when he suffered a series of falls. He skied and played tennis into his 90s, Stewart Burns said. His last book, "Fire and Light: How the Enlightenment Transformed The World," was published in the fall of 2013. He wrote or co-wrote a half dozen books after the age of 80.

Auburn, NY (WSYR-TV) – The Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn has cleared the first hurdle to becoming a National Historical Park.

The US Senate passed legislation on the designation on Thursday.

Now the bill will go to Congress.

The bill would cover both the Harriet Tubman Home in Auburn and the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park in Maryland.

The Cayuga County Office of Tourism says the designation would create about 70 new jobs and would expand tourism in Cayuga County, bringing in an estimated $3.12 million annually.

Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand along with Congressman Dan Maffei announced the bill’s passage in the Senate.

Waterloo (WSYR-TV) – A Waterloo village judge who reported that he had been assaulted with a toilet-tank lid has been indicted on multiple felonies.

A nine-count indictment against Waterloo Village Justice Roger Barto was unsealed on Monday.

Third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony
Third-degree insurance fraud, a class D felony
Fourth-degree corrupting the government, a class E felony
First-degree falsifying business records, a class E felony
Defrauding the government, a class E felony
Third-degree falsely reporting an incident, a class A misdemeanor
Two counts of official misconduct, a class A misdemeanor
Petit larceny, a class A misdemeanor

Barto pleaded not guilty.

Robert "Bob" Francis Hastings, Sr., a radio actor who found his footing in television, notably for portraying "yes man" Lt. Elroy Carpenter on the popular sitcom "McHale's Navy," has died. He was 89.

Hastings died Monday at his Burbank home. He had pancreatic cancer, his third bout with the illness in 15 years.

Hastings began his career in radio in 1936 at the age of 11. He was featured on a variety of shows such as "The Daily Mirror Radio Gang" and "Adventures in King Arthurland." Less than a decade later, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a B-29 navigator during World War II. Upon his return, his voice found the airwaves again, voicing Archie Andrews until 1953, the main character of the popular comic, according to the Internet Movie Database.

In 1949, Hastings moved to television with roles such as Hal on "Captain Video and His Video Rangers." That work, and his keen ear for foreign accents, led to a recurring role as a lieutenant on "Sergeant Bilko" in 1956.

Reached in New York, Don Hastings called his older brother and fellow actor his hero.

"I miss him. He was a great guy. He was a good father and a good husband," Don said. "That's hard to be in show business."

The younger Hastings played Dr. Bob Hughes on the soap opera "As The World Turns" for decades.

(CNN) -- Paul Mazursky, a five-time Oscar nominee who directed and wrote such films as "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice," "An Unmarried Woman" and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills," has died, his agent said Tuesday.

He was 84. The cause of death was not revealed, but Mazursky had been in ill health for some time.

Mazursky was known for his compassionate touch as a writer and director, guiding such performers as Dyan Cannon (1969's "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice&quot , Art Carney (1974's "Harry and Tonto&quot and Jill Clayburgh (1978's "An Unmarried Woman&quot to Academy Award nominations for acting.

Carney, in fact, won a best actor Oscar for his performance as a widower who travels cross-country with his cat, Tonto.

Indeed, Mazursky was fond of such low-key, human stories, though usually with a dose of humor. "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" was about wife-swapping; "An Unmarried Woman" was about a wealthy New Yorker whose husband leaves her, putting her in the dating pool for the first time in years.
