London Bridge attack - Anti Terror police shoot man in fake suicide vest dead after stabbing

Source: The Independent

A man has been shot by police near London Bridge in an incident which is being responded to "as though it is terror-related", the Metropolitan Police said.

Footage on social media appeared to show armed officers surround a person on the ground before discharging a weapon, while a bystander appears to remove a large knife from the scene.

The witness video appears to show a man being shot on the pavement of the north-bound carriageway on the western side, near Fishmongers' Hall.

Will the last person to leave Northgate Mall turn out the lights?

Crosscut

If you’ve lived in Seattle for any period of time, you’ll know I am in the Northgate Mall food court. What you may not know is that Northgate — the nation’s very first mall — is now one of the country’s latest ghost malls. In a trend that reflects shifting retail patterns across the globe, the mall is being “redeveloped,” as brick-and-mortar stores close and online sales surge.

As of Monday, the landlord had turned off the heat in the food court, where Piroshky, Piroshky employees appear to be warming themselves by standing close to the baked meat pies.

Northgate opened in 1950, on a 60-acre plot, and the ribbon-cutting was such a big deal to Seattle that television stations interrupted regular programming to show it. Then newspapers described Northgate as a “miracle mile,” with the $3 million state-of-the-art Bon Marche department store as centerpiece. Back then Northgate wasn’t even covered — it was more like University Village.

Today, America’s first mall is mostly deserted, with all but a few dozen stores closed. I write this in the food court, a place I discovered a few years ago as an ideal setting to work. I’m at my favorite table, which is just far enough away from the automatic doors to avoid a breeze, but not too close to Sarku Japan, which would make me smell like teriyaki. But these days there isn’t a lot of meat on the grill at Sarku, and those automatic doors hardly ever slide open, either.

NEW HAMPSHIRE 2020: Sanders jumps to lead, BUttigieg surges While Warren and Biden slip (Emerson)

A new WHDH 7 News/Emerson College poll finds a major shakeup in the New Hampshire primary with Senator Bernie Sanders leading with 26%, followed by Mayor Pete Buttigieg at 22%. Former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren are at 14%, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is at 6%, and Entrepreneur Andrew Yang is at 5%. All other candidates are below 5%. (Nov. 22-26, MM, n=549, +/- 4.1%).

This is a major shift from Emerson’s last New Hampshire poll in September, where Biden led with 24% (-10), followed by Warren with 21% (-7). Sanders has jumped from third, where he was at 13% (+13), and Buttigieg also doubled his support from 11% (+11).

Spencer Kimball, Director of Emerson Polling, said “the Democratic voters have taken a look at Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren and they appear unsatisfied at this time which brought some voters back to Bernie Sanders while others are now moving to a fresh face in Pete Buttigieg, this demonstrates the fluidity of the race.”

O.K., Mayor: Why 37-Year-Old Pete Buttigieg Is Attracting Boomers

https://t.co/FMIh43LvSF" target="_blank">NewcYork Times

DENISON, Iowa — Pete Buttigieg likes a crisp white button-down — no fuss, no flash — and his favorite novel is by a man who died in 1941.

He has taken to calling himself “the retirement guy,” after introducing a plan this week for long-term care.

He recently referenced the “Bull Moose progressive movement,” a nod to the politics of Teddy Roosevelt.

As Mr. Buttigieg, 37, looks to solidify his support in the remaining weeks before the Democratic primary season begins, he has found a wellspring of enthusiasm among a critical bloc of voters more frequently associated with Joseph R. Biden Jr.: older white Americans.

Buttigieg to run first televised ads in South Carolina

The Hill

South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg's (D) campaign is slated to run its first televised ads in South Carolina on Tuesday.

The ads, which were first reported by NBC News, are part of a bigger $2 million ad buy in the Palmetto State.

The spots will air as Buttigieg campaigns in South Carolina, a state where he has continuously trailed in the polls.

A Quinnipiac University survey released earlier this month showed former Vice President Joe Biden leading the Democratic presidential field in South Carolina with the support of 33 percent of respondents, while Warren and Sanders trailed at 13 percent and 11 percent, respectively. Buttigieg came in fourth place with 6 percent support.

Russian dairy farmers gave cows VR goggles with hopes they would be happier and make better milk

CNN

A farm just outside of Moscow is testing VR glasses for its cows, it says, in an effort to increase the quantity -- and quality -- of the milk produced.

That's according to a news release published Monday from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Moscow region. It came accompanied by photos of a cow trying out its fancy new goggles.

...snip...

So, a team of developers, with the help of veterinarians and consultants for dairy production, made some oversized VR glasses for cows. They adapted the human versions to account for cows' different head shapes and eyesight, the news release says. And then voila! Cow VR glasses.

And what were these cows experiencing with their new VR glasses? A wild, expansive field beneath the summer sun. A cow's (virtual) paradise.
