Whitmer orders Michigan theaters, bars to remain closed until May 28

Source: Detroit Free Press

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered theaters, restaurants, bars, casinos, gyms and other places of accommodation to remain shuttered until May 28 amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

They remain limited to carry-out and delivery orders only.

The executive order issued Thursday extends one set to expire and came as the governor also extended a state of emergency without approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature. The state of emergency was set to expire Thursday night.

Whitmer and the Legislature are at war over her legal authority to now enforce emergency orders. The Legislature plans to take the governor to court.

Internal GOP poll points to troubling signs for Georgia Republicans

Source: Atlanta Journal-Constitution

An internal poll conducted for the Georgia House GOP Caucus points to troubling signs for Republican leaders: President Donald Trump is deadlocked with Joe Biden and voters aren’t giving the White House, Gov. Brian Kemp or the Legislature high marks for the coronavirus response.

The poll also suggests trouble for U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, showing the former financial executive with 11% of the vote and essentially tied with Democrats Matt Lieberman and Raphael Warnock. U.S. Rep. Doug Collins leads the November field with 29% of the vote, and outdoes Loeffler among Republicans by a 62-18 margin.

The survey, obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was conducted by the political polling and research firm Cygnal between April 25-27 and it involved 591 likely voters. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

It’s one of the few recent polls that offer a snapshot of how Georgians view the government’s pandemic response, though it was taken before Kemp’s decision Thursday to lift the shelter-in-place order for most Georgians.

Capitol protesters urge an end to Michigan's state of emergency

Source: Detroit Free Press

LANSING — A few hundred demonstrators gathered under light rain outside the Capitol Thursday, urging lawmakers not to extend Michigan's state of emergency related to the coronavirus pandemic.

They carried signs that read "Impeach Whitmer," "You're Killing Small Businesses," and "Liberty or Death." Many also wore hats or carried other paraphernalia touting Republican President Donald Trump and his 2020 re-election campaign.

Some wore face masks but many did not. Many also did not observe social distancing guidelines that call for six-foot separations between people.

A large number of vehicles blocked most of Allegan Avenue, which runs by the side of the Capitol, and Lansing police officers were directing traffic at the corner of Allegan and Capitol avenues.

Subway service will halt from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. so trains can be disinfected.

Source: New York Times

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Thursday that the New York City subway would halt service from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. each night starting Weds., May 7, so that all trains could be disinfected.

The policy will interrupt service on one of the few subways in the world that runs around the clock. It is believed to be the first time that New York City’s subway has had a regularly scheduled, systemwide halt in the 52 years since the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which oversees it, was created.

“This is as ambitious as anything we’ve ever undertaken,” Mr. Cuomo said at his daily briefing.

The announcement followed days of tension between state and city leaders over homeless people using subway trains as a form of shelter during the coronavirus pandemic, creating what many people felt were unsanitary conditions. Mr. Cuomo called the situation “disgusting” earlier in the week.

The subway has never NOT run in the overnight hours. Despite the reductions in ridership, New York is still a 24-hour city.

Maryland GOP governor is hiding his state's testing kits in an undisclosed location

Source: Raw Story

Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan told the Washington Post’s Robert Costa on Thursday that he has had to hide COVID-19 testing kits to make sure President Donald Trump doesn’t commandeer them.

During an interview with Costa, Hogan explained how he worked to smuggle testing kits in from South Korea in a complicated process that took over three weeks to pull off.

He said it was important to make sure that the plane containing the tests landed at Baltimore/Washington International Airport and not Dulles International Airport to lessen the change that the cargo could get taken by the federal government.

Hogan said that he even called in the Maryland National Guard to oversee the delivery of the shipment of the testing kits as they arrived at BWI.
