Tear gas, pepper bullets used on crowds as George Floyd protests spread in Denver

Source: Denver Post

What started as a small, peaceful protest in Denver, demanding justice for George Floyd, escalated into chaos Thursday evening after someone fired gunshots near the Capitol, sending demonstrators scattering across the city as police shot tear gas canisters and pepper spray.

Tension built throughout the night as protesters and police clashed in the heart of the city. Video shared on social media showed a driver striking a demonstrator in the street near the Capitol, footage that Gov. Jared Polis later said left him “absolutely shocked.”

The crowds grew larger as the night progressed, and, at around 9:15 p.m., Denver police fired tear gas and pepper spray to disperse hundreds who remained on the Capitol lawn. People ran in all directions through Capitol Hill and Civic Center to escape the fumes.

By 11 p.m., Denver police reported that all downtown streets had reopened, except for 13th and Lincoln streets, where officers were “monitoring smaller groups of protesters.”

Walz’s order issued Thursday afternoon came after Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s calls for assistance after widespread damage across Lake Street Wednesday night. Damage and looting has since spread to St. Paul.

Frey later declared a local emergency for up to 72 hours, expiring around 5 p.m. Sunday.
