Previously secret 'alternative' Mueller report goes public

Source: Politico

The Justice Department has released portions of a previously unseen alternative version of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on ties between former President Donald Trump and Russia.

However, the 37-page report prepared at the direction of Mueller deputy Andrew Weissmann and released this week under the Freedom of Information Act is heavily redacted. Justice Department officials withheld large swaths of the document on grounds of ongoing investigations, privacy and protecting internal deliberations.

The deletions are typically made by career officials at the Justice Department and the FBI, but the secrecy puts the Biden administration in the curious position of fighting to keep from public view evidence of alleged wrongdoing by top advisers to Trump. It appears that those blacking out the redacted document sought to delete any details not made public in the version of Mueller’s report released in 2019 or in other public documents.

The report focuses on the work of what was known within Mueller’s office as “Team M” a group of investigators and prosecutors focused on connections between Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and businessmen and politicians friendly to Russia.

Texas official: Police made 'wrong decision' to wait on breaching Uvalde classroom

Source: Politico

A Texas official said Friday that local police made the “wrong decision” by waiting nearly an hour to breach the elementary school classroom where a gunman shot and killed 19 children and two teachers.

Nearly 20 officers stood outside the classroom during the Tuesday attack at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. The on-scene commander believed at the time that 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos had barricaded himself and that the children were no longer at risk, Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw said at a Friday news conference.

Meanwhile, during the 48 minutes it took for agents to confront the gunman, teachers and children in the classroom were still alive and repeatedly calling 911 begging for help.

“From the benefit of hindsight, where I’m sitting now, of course it was not the right decision,” McCraw said of the commander’s decision to wait for tactical teams to arrive to breach the door. “It was the wrong decision, period.”

PAC to spend $1M to oust 'Squad' member Tlaib

Politico

A new PAC endorsed by Bakari Sellers says it’s going to spend upward of $1 million to support one of the candidates trying to unseat progressive firebrand Rashida Tlaib.

The stated mission of the group, Urban Empowerment Action PAC, is to back candidates who are “dedicated to the educational empowerment and economic uplift of Black communities,” according to a release first shared with POLITICO’s The Recast. The PAC adds that its support of Janice Winfrey, the Detroit City Clerk, is meant to boost “her campaign to restore infrastructure, improve educational opportunities in the district and support the Biden-Harris agenda in D.C.”

The group is made up of a coalition of Black and Jewish business leaders.

For her part, Tlaib has been unequivocal in her disdain for Israel and its treatment of Palestinians and this week introduced a resolution in the House to recognize Palestinian Nakba — a term describing the displacement of Palestinians ahead of the 1948 establishment of Israel.

Maloney Has 10-point Lead Over Nadler in NY12

In the redrawn 12th Congressional District that spans both the Upper East Side and West Side, long-time Representatives Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler contend for the same seat. Among likely voters, Maloney leads Nadler 31% to 21%, with 36% undecided.

“Maloney’s support is stronger with female voters,” Kimball continued, “a 35% plurality of female voters back her in the Democratic primary, while male voters are more split: 26% support Maloney and 22% support Nadler.”
