DOJ files charges against disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff

Source: Politico

The Justice Department is prosecuting the legendary lobbyist Jack Abramoff on felony conspiracy charges. Again.

More than 14 years after he pleaded guilty in the biggest Washington lobbying scandal in a generation, Abramoff has agreed to enter guilty pleas on charges of criminal conspiracy and failing to register as a lobbyist for his role in two separate schemes, according to the Justice Department.

In the first, Abramoff allegedly failed to register as a lobbyist after he was hired by an FBI undercover agent posing as a businessperson. In the second, he and another man, Rowland Marcus Andrade, criminally misrepresented a cryptocurrency they claimed would use “biometric technologies” to verify its users’ identities, according to prosecutors.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has filed civil charges against Abramoff and Andrade in addition to the criminal charges.

New York City tries to shift focus from lackluster contact tracing results

Source: Politico

NEW YORK — Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration rolled out its contact tracing program to great fanfare, promising it would help ensure New York City’s re-emergence from the crush of the coronavirus.

But things didn’t go as planned and after spending a week on the defensive City Hall is now seeking to shift the perception of a lackluster program cursed by a turf war between the mayor and his health department.

City officials this week began emphasizing different data points to present the program as a success, seeking external support from doctors and doing radio interviews to shape the narrative.

“Among our cases that complete our interview, meaning ones that we’ve asked about, whether they have contacts, 74 percent to date have shared contacts with us. In the last week alone, week three, 86 percent of our cases, people newly diagnosed with coronavirus that got through our interview gave us contacts — 86 percent,” Ted Long, the doctor overseeing the program, said during a press briefing this week.

Fox News Poll: Biden leads in Florida as Trump lags among seniors

Voters think Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden is better suited to handle the issues of the day, expanding his lead over President Donald Trump in the battleground state of Florida.

Biden tops Trump by 9 points, 49-40 percent, in a Fox News survey of Florida registered voters. That’s up from a 3-point edge in April (46-43 percent).

Among those “extremely” motivated to vote, Biden’s lead grows to 11 points (53-42 percent).

In 2016, Trump received 49 percent of the vote, winning the Sunshine State by one point.

NYT: How the Virus Won

New York Times

(an in-depth story with interactive mapping of cases)

It started small. A man near Seattle had a persistent cough. A woman in Chicago had a fever and shortness of breath.

By mid-February, there were only 15 known coronavirus cases in the United States, all with direct links to China.

“The 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero,” President Trump said. The patients were isolated. Their contacts were monitored. Travel from China was restricted.

None of that worked. Only a small part of the picture was visible. Some 2,000 hidden infections were already spreading through major cities

We traced the hidden spread of the epidemic to explain why the United States failed to stop it.At every crucial moment, American officials were weeks or months behind the reality of the outbreak. Those delays likely cost tens of thousands of lives.
