How Mueller's congressional testimony could reverberate in 2020

NBC News

WASHINGTON — Robert Mueller’s congressional testimony on Wednesday could very well turn out to be a dud for Democrats.

But it also represents their last best chance at selling the middle of the electorate that Mueller’s report contains damaging information about President Trump and his team.

“While America's political class has been obsessively following the two-year investigation into Russia's efforts to help Trump win the presidency, most of the country has not,” NBC’s Ken Dilanian writes.

“Polls show that as few as 10 percent of Americans have read any part of special counsel Robert Mueller's 448-page report — and that the news coverage of the report's release did not change what has long been a partisan split verdict on Trump and Russia.”

I'm inclined to believe that very few people who haven't already taken a position on the Mueller Report will be paying attention, unless he makes a bombshell comment.

Israel vote will expose Democratic divisions

Politico

The House is slated to pass legislation Tuesday to oppose the global boycott movement against Israel, a vote that will put a spotlight both on Democratic divisions and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

Most Democrats in the House oppose the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement, an international campaign meant to exert pressure on Israel over treatment of the Palestinians. Critics say it would isolate and harm Israel, which retains strong support in Congress from both parties.

But the BDS movement has support in Congress from some progressives, including Omar, who has offered her own resolution affirming the rights of Americans to participate in boycotts meant to promote human rights either in the United States or other countries.

Omar has cited boycotts of Nazi Germany and Apartheid-era South Africa in making the case for her resolution — comparisons that have drawn the ire of Israel’s supporters.

Democrats planning Mueller 'war room,' social media blitz

Source: Politico

House Democrats are preparing an all-out messaging blitz over the next three days to refocus Americans' attention on special counsel Robert Mueller's report, hoping to channel the intense focus on Mueller's congressional testimony Wednesday into a public outcry against President Donald Trump, as well as the prospect of future foreign interference in U.S. elections.

Democratic leadership aides say their entire caucus will be involved in the effort, blasting out messages on social media beginning Tuesday morning under the hashtag #RetweetTheReport, which they'll use to elevate excerpts from Mueller's findings that present vivid details of the Trump 2016 campaign's contacts with Russia, as well as Trump's efforts to derail Mueller's investigation.

The excerpts will include a dozen quotes from Mueller's first volume — on Russian election interference and foreign contacts with the Trump campaign —as well as an additional 11 from the second volume, which detailed 10 episodes of potential obstruction of justice by Trump.

The social media effort will be bolstered by a Democratic "war room" that plans to be active during Mueller's testimony, clipping excerpts from his testimony to blast out widely and combating Republicans who will likely have their own messaging operation.

Warren unveils details in plan to cancel $640B in student loan debt

Politico

Democratic 2020 candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Tuesday disclosed the details of her promise to cancel approximately $640 billion of student loan debt, targeted at lower and middle-income earners.

Warren's measure follows a competing bill released earlier this year by her presidential campaign opponent, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). His plan would go further in eliminating all outstanding student loan debt, regardless of a borrower’s income.

Warren (Mass.) is introducing the bill — dubbed The Student Loan Debt Relief Act — along with Rep. Jim Clyburn, (S.C.), the No. 3 House Democrat, who will sponsor a companion measure in that chamber.

The legislation calls for automatically canceling most student loans without requiring borrowers to submit applications. The government would use existing income and debt information to determine who qualifies.

And the person who applies to college the day after this takes effect: do they assume that the loans they take out will also be vacated?

Behind Pence's Air Force Two cancellation: A drug dealer

Source: Politico

Pence abruptly canceled his trip to Manchester, N.H., earlier this month but never said why he was pulled from Air Force Two at the last minute.

The vice president’s aides and even President Donald Trump himself kept up the suspense. “You'll know in about two weeks,” Trump told reporters at the time. “There was a very interesting problem that they had in New Hampshire.”

Among the problems was a federal law enforcement probe involving individuals Pence would likely encounter, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the incident. If Pence stepped off the vice presidential aircraft, one of the people he would have seen on the ground was under investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration for moving more than $100,000 of fentanyl from Massachusetts to New Hampshire.

Jeff Hatch, who agreed in federal court Friday to plead guilty and will face up to four years in prison, works for an opioid addiction treatment center in southern New Hampshire that Pence was set to visit. A former New York Giants player, he has spoken publicly for years about his own challenge with drug and alcohol addiction, which ended his football career.

Al Franken was pushed out of Senate by Chuck Schumer in secret bedside ultimatum

New York Daily News

Al Franken was forced to resign from the Senate by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer who reportedly delivered a bedside “quit now” ultimatum to the ex-Saturday Night Live funny man in a secret meeting as sex harassment allegations mushroomed.

Franken says Schumer refused to allow him to present his side of a damning photo that showed him fondling a female comedian’s breasts and gave him just a few hours to resign, The New Yorker reported Monday.

Intead, Schumer, sitting on the side of his bed, warned Franken that he would rally Democratic senators against him after summoning the Minnesota senator to his Washington D.C. apartment on Dec. 1, 2016.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Franken said, according to the magazine. “I asked him for due process and he said no.”

I could have sworn I was told that Gillibrand masterminded the whole plot and everyone else was just a weak-willed lackey.
