Roberta Kaplan, Who Aided Cuomo, Resigns from Time's Up

New York Times

The fallout from a damaging report that found Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo sexually harassed 11 women widened on Monday when Roberta A. Kaplan, a nationally prominent lawyer with ties to the governor, resigned from Time’s Up, the organization founded by Hollywood women to fight sexual abuse and promote gender equality.

Ms. Kaplan, the chairwoman of Time’s Up and the co-founder of its legal defense fund, was one of several prominent figures whom the report found to be involved in an effort to discredit one of Mr. Cuomo’s alleged victims, and she has continuing legal ties to a former Cuomo aide accused of leading that effort.

“Unfortunately, recent events have made it clear that even our apparent allies in the fight to advance women can turn out to be abusers,” Ms. Kaplan wrote in a letter submitting her resignation from the group. “We have felt the raw, personal and profound pain of that betrayal.”

She said that her work as a practicing lawyer meant that she could not openly answer questions about her involvement with Mr. Cuomo or Melissa DeRosa, the aide to the governor who Ms. Kaplan represented in the attorney general inquiry.

The ad was filmed without any green screen or special effects and was the result of rigorous planning, training, testing and a strict safety protocol. At the pinnacle of the building, the main protagonist had a reduced circumference space of only 1.2 metres at 828 metres high to pull off the stunt.

OMG!!! WTF!!! SOCIALISM!!!!!

Shelby County (TN) School District:

UPDATE (7/20/21): As Shelby County Schools prioritizes health and safety with our full return to in-person instruction, the District is updating its safety protocols. After reviewing the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Superintendent Ray shared updated COVID-19 protocols for the 2021-22 school year (PowerPoint). The District is maintaining several health protocols while enhancing safety measures. Like school districts across the nation, SCS is following science and data to guide decisions about providing COVID-19 protection for students, teachers and staff. The District is mindful of the rising cases and the spread of the Delta variant. Therefore, masks should be worn indoors (schools) and on buses by all employees and students, regardless of vaccination status until further notice.

Is Travel Next in the Fight Over Who Profits From Native American Culture?

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/03/travel/travel-native-american.amp.html

John Gunderman believed his vision for a campground with 70 tepees, 12 hogans and 43 Conestoga wagons in the Arizona desert off Route 66 would “invoke nostalgia that transcends to every generation.”

Others disagreed.

“We find the use of Indigenous/Native American culture for commercial profit to be extremely disturbing and dehumanizing toward us and our sovereign tribal relatives,” Sharon Doctor, the chairwoman of Coconino County’s Indigenous Peoples Advisory Council, wrote to the county board of supervisors about the proposed “Historic 2 Guns Luxury Glamping Resort.”

Mr. Gunderman was asking for a zoning change to develop about 250 acres outside Flagstaff, and for months refused to budge on the Native American themes used in his design. Just before the vote in May, he said that given the “cultural affront” they caused, he would remove “all elements that either celebrate or borrow from the cultures of Native America.”

NY lawmakers 'fully dedicated' to impeaching Cuomo after sexual harassment findings: Assemblyman Kim

WPIX

NEW YORK — Following a New York attorney general report detailing findings of sexual harassment by Gov. Andrew Cuomo against 11 women, a New York assemblyman said on Sunday it’s not a matter of if the governor is impeached, but how.

New York Assemblyman Ron Kim told PIX on Politics host Dan Mannarino state lawmakers are “fully dedicated” to filing articles of impeachment against Cuomo.

He urged the governor to resign, although he also said he doesn’t expect Cuomo to do so. The governor and his attorneys have denied the findings outline in New York Attorney General Letitia James’ independent investigation.

“We are no longer discussing when to impeach, we are discussing how to impeach,” Kim said, referencing whether lawmakers will include allegations surrounding COVID deaths in nursing homes and the alleged use of state resources to produce and promote his book on the pandemic.

Doesn't he know that the blogosphere thinks this is "unfair"?

Only in New York...

Ask A Native New Yorker: Can I Tell The Bodega Cat To Beat It?

Dear Jake:

I recently moved to Harlem in the 150s, and, as you might expect, there aren't that many places to grab groceries/sandwiches/beer/anything in my neighborhood that aren't bodegas.

Here's the problem: the four closest places in the area, including the one right at my corner, have cats, and their hair gets everywhere. I'm allergic to cats, and this makes grabbing a bag of chips and a 24-ounce Coors Banquet a miserable experience for me. I start sneezing, wheezing, and itching all over whenever I pop in.

The closest bodega I have found that doesn't have a cat in it is 6 blocks away from me. I understand from the internet that bodega cats are sort of a treasured little oddity in New York, but I don't understand why they're tolerated when they're definitely illegal and send people with cat allergies—there are a lot of us—into a state of misery.

What's the right way to tell the owner of the bodega on my block that I'd prefer it if I didn't keep it around? Or should I just keep my gentrifying mouth shut?

Sincerely,

Harlem Cat Hater

Dear HCH:

Sure, just walk in and explain yourself: "Hello, shopkeep! I am new in the neighborhood, and I was simply wondering if you'd be willing to evict your beloved deli cat, as its presence offends my delicate sinuses. Now would you please point me towards your kale aisle?"

Former Bill Clinton advisor Doug Sosnik outlines headwinds Dems face in 2022

Axios

Doug Sosnik — senior adviser to the Brunswick Group, and White House political director for President Bill Clinton — is out with a new deck, shown first to Axios AM readers, warning his party how hard it'll be to hang onto its House and Senate majorities in next year's midterms.

The bottom line: "With only two exceptions (1998 and 2002), the party out of power has picked up seats in every midterm election since World War II," Sosnik writes.

The last five presidents have lost Senate and House majorities.

Despite President Biden's strong first six months in office, "there are some signs that his support is beginning to soften," Sosnik writes.

From his background data (which I've received a copy of)

Senate Races

Lean D: NH, NV, AZ, GA
Toss-Up: NC, PA, WI
Lean R: FL, OH

Governor Races

Lean D: MI, WI, VA, MD
Toss-Up: KS, PA, AZ
Lean R: FL, GA

I hung out with Mary Trump yesterday...

...a mutual friend brought me along to her book party (she couldn't have an in-person event when TOO MUCH AND NEVER ENOUGH was published last year). Interesting discussions on politics (local and national) and the state of publishing industry.

Executive Assistant Who Accused Cuomo of Groping Comes Forward

Source: New York Times

The executive assistant who accused Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of repeatedly groping her and who filed a criminal complaint against him has come forward in an interview to be aired on Monday.

Brittany Commisso acknowledged in an interview with “CBS “This Morning” and The Albany Times Union that she was the person identified as “Executive Assistant #1” in a report by the New York State attorney general, which found that the governor had sexually harassed at least 11 women.

“What he did to me was a crime,” Ms. Commisso said in interview excerpts released on Sunday. “He broke the law.”

She added: “The governor needs to be held accountable.”
