GOP candidates double down on anti-immigrant rhetoric

Axios

GOP candidates from Nevada to Ohio are stepping up attacks on undocumented Latino immigrants despite warnings the strategy may backfire in some general election contests.

The big picture: The rhetoric aims to appeal to white voters aligned with former President Trump who are voting in GOP primaries. But some Republicans say it could alienate crucial Latino swing voters in November.

Details: Nevada Republican Senate hopeful Adam Laxalt has spent $13,000 running radio ads in Elko and Las Vegas touting his opposition to protections for immigrants who were brought to the country as children, commonly known as "Dreamers."

The radio ads tout Laxalt's tenure as the state's attorney general for suing the federal government and "stopping unconstitutional attempts to grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants."

Oklahoma governor signs bill making nearly all abortions illegal

Source: Axios

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) on Tuesday signed into law a bill that makes providing an abortion a felony.

Driving the news: The legislation bans all abortions unless they're necessary to save a pregnant person's life. A person found guilty of providing an abortion would face up to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $100,000.

Oklahoma's S.B. 612 has no exceptions for rape or incest and is set to go into effect this summer.

The person receiving the abortion would not be criminally liable.

Big cuts coming for CNN+ after slow start

Source: Axios

Investment and projections for CNN+ are expected to be cut dramatically in response to a low adoption rate, two sources tell Axios.

By the numbers: The news giant was initially planning to invest around $1 billion in the service over the next four years.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are expected to be cut from that original investment total.

To date, around $300 million has been spent on the subscription service, which includes a sizable marketing investment.

Unanimous state Supreme Court blocks attempt to re-examine ballots in narrowly decided Racine school

Source: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

MADISON – A unanimous state Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled those challenging a narrowly decided 2020 school referendum in Racine did not have a right to have ballots re-examined in court after they had already been reviewed during a recount.

The decision lets stand a referendum that passed by five votes and is expected to cost Racine taxpayers $1 billion over 30 years.

The ruling has implications for future recounts in a perennially purple state. Wisconsin has had a long run of tight elections, resulting in a statewide recount in 2016 and limited ones in 2020.

At issue in the case decided Tuesday was whether those challenging election results can force courts to reexamine ballots after they have already been recounted. The justices sided with lower courts that determined they could not.

Clashes erupt at GOP county conventions with Michigan party's future on line

Detroit News

Verbal clashes and a struggle for power dominated the Republican convention Monday night in Macomb County, one of Michigan's largest, opening a period of 13 days that could redefine the state party's future.

Another battle was happening in Kent County over who would oversee the county convention. The fight resulted in a close vote between the county chairman and an ally of Kalamazoo lawyer Matthew DePerno, who vowed to "storm the conventions" in a bid to get delegates who would back his nomination for attorney general against former House Speaker Tom Leonard of DeWitt.

Several People Shot in Brooklyn Subway Station

New York Times

Several people were shot on the platform of a Brooklyn subway station during the Tuesday morning rush, officials said, a violent episode that heightened simmering fears about public safety that have hindered New York City’s push to recover from the pandemic.

Preliminary reports indicated that five people were shot, a law enforcement official said. The police were seeking a man with a gas mask and an orange construction vest, the official said.

Police officers were called to the 36th Street subway station, where the D, N and R lines pass through the Sunset Park neighborhood, at around 8:30 a.m., a Police Department spokeswoman said. They had also received reports of smoke inside the station.

Transit officials said that trains on the D, N and R lines would be delayed because of an unspecified investigation. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city’s subway, said no additional details were immediately available.

Putin says peace talks are at 'a dead end' and calls atrocities in Bucha 'fake.'

Source: New York Times

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Tuesday that peace talks with Ukraine had reached a “dead end” and called the evidence of Russian atrocities in the Kyiv suburb of Bucha “fake,” using his first extended remarks about the war in nearly a month to insist that Russia would persist with its invasion.

Speaking at a news conference at a spaceport in Russia’s Far East, Mr. Putin said that Ukraine had changed its position after the round of peace talks held in Istanbul on March 29 to one that was no longer acceptable to the Kremlin. While there were indications that Ukraine had this week again adopted a more constructive stance, he said, Russia’s “military operation will continue until its full completion” and its goals are met.
