GOP reps introduce bill to stem flow of Palestinians into US amid Israel-Hamas conflict

Source: The Hill

Reps. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) and Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) are set to introduce legislation that would curb the flow of Palestinians looking to resettle in the United States.

The bill, “Guaranteeing Aggressors Zero Admission Act,” — dubbed the GAZA Act — would prevent the Biden administration from issuing visas to Palestinians.

“We can’t let President Biden abuse our parole and visa rules to bring unvetted Palestinians into American communities the way he did with thousands of unvetted Afghans,” Tiffany said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “I introduced the GAZA Act to protect America’s national security.”

In his newsletter to constituents, Tiffany said the bipartisan support for Israel has been encouraging but “a few far-light, fringe” members have made shocking statements.

Scoop: Iran warns Israel through UN against ground offensive in Gaza

Source: Axios

Iran sent a message to Israel on Saturday stressing that it does not want further escalation in the Hamas-Israel war, but that it will have to intervene if the Israeli operation in Gaza continues, two diplomatic sources with knowledge of the situation told Axios.

Why it matters: The fighting between Hamas and Israel will turn into a regional war if Iran gets involved either directly or indirectly, such as through a militant group in Syria or by backing any Hezbollah decision to fully join the fighting.

Iran's message, sent to Israel through the UN, comes as the Biden administration has been trying to deter Iran and Lebanon-backed Hezbollah, supported by Iran, from joining the war. This week, the U.S. sent an aircraft carrier group and fighter jets to the region.

Behind the scenes: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian met with UN envoy to the Middle East Tor Wennesland on Saturday in Beirut, the two diplomatic sources said.

Egyptian authorities are not allowing US nationals to enter Egypt from Gaza, local media says

Source: CNN

Egyptian authorities are not allowing US nationals and citizens of other countries to enter Egypt through the Rafah border crossing on Saturday, insisting that the crossing must also facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza, according to Alqahera News, a local Egyptian news channel.

"Egyptian authorities have rejected the idea of using the Rafah crossing only for foreigners. They added that, 'The Egyptian position is clear,' and that it requires the facilitation of the entry and passage of aid to the Gaza Strip," Alqahera News said, quoting Egyptian sources.

Alqahera News is owned by Egypt's United Media Services and is linked to the government.

This comes after the US State Department sent guidance to Palestinian-Americans in Gaza saying that the Rafah border crossing "may be open" on Saturday afternoon.

Biden team launches organizing pilot project in Wisconsin and Arizona

Washington Post

President Biden’s reelection effort will launch a pilot test of its 2024 organizing strategy in Wisconsin and Arizona next month, hiring about two dozen staffers and opening a Milwaukee office with a new focus on digital and in-person outreach that aims to directly leverage the personal relationships of volunteers.

The moves come as the Democratic National Committee has redirected its organizing efforts to a new smartphone app that encourages supporters to communicate with people in their own friend, family and community circles and then report those contacts back to the party’s voter file.

This “relational organizing” has become a growing part of Democratic campaigns for several cycles, outperforming traditional door-knocking and call sheet lists that volunteers have long used to contact strangers during campaigns. But the scale of what the Biden campaign, in concert with the national party, is planning for next year has not been attempted before.

“At the DNC we can make phone calls and send texts and do a lot of cold calls and outreach, but we cannot cut through the noise in the same way you can,” Meg DiMartino, the chief of staff for organizing at the national party, told more than a dozen volunteers in a virtual training Wednesday. “You cannot unsubscribe from your mom in the way you can unsubscribe from other organizations.”

Dennis Kucinich Leaves Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Presidential Campaign

New York Times

Dennis J. Kucinich left his post as the presidential campaign manager for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and was replaced by Mr. Kennedy’s daughter-in-law, a political neophyte best known for a memoir about her tenure in the C.I.A.

The campaign shake-up comes at a moment of renewed scrutiny on Mr. Kennedy’s campaign. The political scion of one of the most influential families in contemporary American politics announced on Monday that he was ending his Democratic primary challenge to President Biden and would continue his campaign as an independent candidate.

Mr. Kucinich’s departure came a surprise even to Mr. Kennedy’s press secretary, who was informed of it on Friday afternoon by a New York Times reporter. In a subsequent news release, Mr. Kennedy said his campaign had “benefited enormously from the political experience of Dennis Kucinich.” Mr. Kucinich was not quoted in the release.

Mr. Kennedy’s new campaign manager is Amaryllis Fox Kennedy, a former C.I.A. agent, memoirist and documentarian who in 2018 married Mr. Kennedy’s son, Robert F. Kennedy III.

New Zealand shifts right as voters punish ruling party

Source: CNN

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has conceded his Labour party lost Saturday’s election, as voters punished the government and took the country rightwards nine months after his predecessor Jacinda Ardern suddenly resigned.

The rising cost of living dominated campaigning with voters New Zealanders ending six years of Labour Party rule, the latter half of which was dominated by the country’s strict response to the coronavirus pandemic that successfully kept infections low but battered the economy.

With 90% of votes counted on Saturday evening, the center-right National Party, led by former airline executive Christopher Luxon, had amassed around 40% of ballots, CNN affiliates RNZ and Newshub reported.

A dejected Hipkins told supporters that Labour did not have enough votes to form a government.

Agreement reached to allow foreigners to leave Gaza

Source: Times of Israel

Egypt, Israel and the United States have agreed to allow foreigners residing in Gaza to pass through the Rafah border crossing into Egypt, a senior Egyptian official says.

The official says Israel has agreed to refrain from striking areas the foreigners would pass through on their way out of the besieged Palestinian territory. He adds that Qatar was involved in the negotiations and the participants received approval from the Palestinian terror groups, Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The agreement does not deal with hostages being held by Hamas.

A second official at the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing point says they received “instructions” to reopen it on Saturday afternoon for foreigners coming from Gaza.

People in northern Gaza will be given safe routes to the south, Israeli military says

Source: The Guardian

The Israeli Defence Forces have told people in the north of the Gaza Strip that between 10am and 4pm there will be two safe routes for them to move south.

The routes, one along the coast and one down the centre of the Gaza Strip, were laid out in a tweet from the IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee.

“For your safety, take advantage of the short time to move south,” the message said. On Friday, the Israeli military gave Palestinians in the north a 24 hour deadline to evacuate ahead of an expected ground operation.

Lack of fuel and electricity and bad internet connections mean people in Gaza have very little access to social media.

Move over "LOL": Gen Z embraces "IJBOL"

There's a new way to describe something funny on social media: "IJBOL," or "I just burst out laughing."

Why it matters: People online constantly look for ways to express exactly how they are responding to content, MaryLeigh Bliss, the chief content officer for youth research organization YPulse, told Axios.

"Since the beginning of communicating through chat, which is what Millennials grew up doing, we've been looking for ways to communicate this incredibly physical reaction to what we're experiencing, seeing, reading," she said.
State of play: K-pop fans are some of IJBOL's most prominent users, according to a search for the term on X.
