New Mexico's Deb Haaland likely to be first Native American congresswoman

New Mexico's Deb Haaland likely to be first Native American congresswoman

Deb Haaland has won the primary for New Mexico's 1st Congressional District, CNN projects, putting her on track to become the first Native American woman in Congress.

The former Democratic state party leader, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna, is seeking to replace Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who is leaving her post representing the solidly Democratic district to run for governor. Haaland outlasted a strong field that included former US Attorney Damon Martinez and Antoinette Sedillo Lopez, an activist and former law professor.

"Tonight, New Mexico made history," Haaland said in a speech Tuesday, calling hers a "victory for working people, a victory for women and a victory for everyone who has been sidelined by the billionaire class."

She included a message for the White House -

"Donald Trump and the billionaire class," she said, "should consider this victory a warning shot: the blue wave is coming."

There are 23 tribes in New Mexico, according to the state's Indian Affairs Department, and Native Americans make up a little more than 10% of the total population.
Haaland will face Republican Janice Arnold-Jones in November.

Iowa Democrats just demolished the past turnout record for a primary! Great sign for November

Iowa Democrats just demolished the past turnout record for a primary. Incredibly good signs for their prospects in November

WHAT HAPPENED TONIGHT IN IOWA’S DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY

https://iowastartingline.com/2018/06/05/what-happened-tonight-in-iowas-democratic-primary/

Iowa held its primaries today and the results in several key races have big implications for the state and national political environment in 2018 and beyond. Here’s Starting Line’s summary of what happened for all you national political watchers.

Democrats Smash Turnout Records

By far the best news of the night for Democrats was the record turnout in many places around the state. Just over 100,000 voted in the 2016 Democratic primary. Only 72,388 showed up in 2014. Neither of those years had statewide contested primaries with big spending. 2006 was the last time that happened, and just under 150,000 came out then.

With a little over 90% of precincts reporting, Democrats already have a turnout of 175,000 in today’s primary. They will almost certainly surpass the turnout for the 2016 Iowa Caucus as well. That is, quite frankly, incredible.

Abby Finkenauer Poised To Be Youngest Woman Elected To Congress

Get ready to hear a lot about Iowa’s 1st Congressional District race. The general election matchup between Democrat Abby Finkenauer, who easily won a four-way primary tonight, and Republican incumbent Rod Blum will be at the top of the national target list. Blum has often been named the most vulnerable incumbent, and he didn’t help himself by angrily walking out of a TV interview last year.

What makes the race more noteworthy is that Finkenauer, 28, would be the youngest woman ever elected to Congress if she wins. She’s centered her campaign message around a working families message, highlighting her own blue-collar upbringing in Dubuque. Finkenauer has already served two terms in the Iowa House.

Trump hasn't visited troops in war zones once in his 500 days in office

Trump hasn’t visited troops in war zones once in his 500 days in office

If Trump truly wanted to support the troops, he might consider visiting them at least once.

https://shareblue.com/trump-troops-war-zones-500-days/

Trump reached his 500th day in office Monday. And that also marked 500 days of snubbing U.S. troops in war zones, whom he has never visited.

Trump has overseen an increase in troop levels in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria from 18,000 in December 2016 to 26,0000 in December 2017. After that, his Defense Department stopped reporting troop levels in those countries.

Paul Eaton, retired Army major general and senior adviser to VoteVets, slammed Trump in a statement to Shareblue Media. “Getting a president to visit troops, in a war zone, is a huge logistical and security challenge, but it is worth it because of what it means to the men and women who are serving,” Eaton said. “I never much agreed with George W. Bush’s policies, but when he went to Iraq and served chow to the troops, for Thanksgiving, it meant a lot to them.” Eaton added, “It’s also good for a president to get away from meeting brass in comfortable environs, and seeing conditions in which the men and women under his command are serving.”

Trump’s neglect of service members is also a departure from President Barack Obama. Less than three months into his presidency, Obama visited troops in Iraq. And he made surprise visits to troops in Afghanistan twice in 2010. Altogether, Obama visited the two war zones five times during his time in office.

Yet even after consistent and vocal criticism from veterans, Trump continues to hide from the men and women he sends into harm’s way. Despite this, draft-dodger Trump, who has consistently disrespected the military, has demanded a military parade in his honor.

This is the cap David Hogg will graduate high school in ...

For Marco Rubio to sell out the students of his state to possibly die in gun violence, Rubio's price is just over one buck a head ................

This is the cap @davidhogg111 will graduate from high school in today — the $1.05 price tag represents the amount the NRA has spent to support Marco Rubio’s campaigns, divided by every student in the state of Florida.

Pruitt's EPA taps former chemical industry attorney to head Superfund group

EPA replaces Scott Pruitt's disgraced banker from running the Superfund program with the more conventional pick of a former attorney for the chemical industry ...........

EPA taps former chemical industry attorney to head Superfund group

https://www.axios.com/epa-taps-former-chemical-industry-attorney-to-head-superfund-task-force-52ef0d6d-70b4-45a4-9e9f-2eae9af545e0.html

The Environmental Protection Agency’s task force that oversees the cleanup of some of the country's most contaminated sites, will be led by a former lawyer for a plastics and chemicals company, the AP reports.

Why it matters: Steven Cook, the new chair of the Superfund Task Force, has reportedly worked more than 20 years as a corporate counsel for LyondellBasell Industries — one of the country’s largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies that the EPA has suspected of polluting some three dozen sites.

The details: The task force is overseeing the cleanups of more than 1,300 toxic sites. The AP reports that Cook signed a memo in April recusing himself from regulatory matters involving LyondellBasell. But he’s allowed to participate in matters involving the company if the decision would also affect five or more other companies.

The national debt has gone up $1 trillion in 6 months, and guess what Trump signed in February ...

This IMHO is why the Kochs and super rich like Trumps non-stop chaos and drama, bad things get done and no one notices

I bet a lot of people missed this one, I sure did ....

The national debt has gone up $1 trillion in the last 6 months (for reference, under Obama it took almost 2 years to go up that much)

And remember all those drop down battles the Republicans had with Obama over extending the debt limit??

Well, well... guess what the Kochs Bros and their rich pals had dumbass Donnie sign in February....

"a debt-limit suspension in February, allowing unlimited borrowing through March 1, 2019"

These rich bastards are robbing us blind right under our noses

Unbelievable .......

It didn’t take long for the U.S. to rack up another trillion dollars of debt

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/it-didnt-take-long-for-the-us-to-rack-up-another-trillion-dollars-of-debt-2018-03-20

It has taken a little more than six months for the U.S. national debt to grow by a trillion dollars, a quick clip that has little precedent over the nation’s recent history.

Last week, the debt hit $21 trillion for the first time, rising from the $20 trillion mark it notched on Sept. 8. The debt is guaranteed to go higher, with President Donald Trump having signed a debt-limit suspension in February, allowing unlimited borrowing through March 1, 2019. Economists expect wider deficits to result from the tax cut Trump signed in December.

While a trillion-dollar increase over roughly six months isn’t unprecedented — there was one in 2009, during the Great Recession, and another in 2010 — it’s certainly fast.

The national debt exceeded $20 trillion in September 2017, after taking 20 months to add a trillion dollars. A debt limit that had been in place since March 2015 was raised in March 2017, and again on Sept. 8, 2017.

Federal judge rips lying, anti-democracy vote suppressor Kris Kobach to shreds

In case you haven't heard, Kris Kobach is a lying democracy hating piece of excrement, and this federal judge was having none of it.

Koback has already been charged and fined $1,000 for lying to the courts.

Now this dirtbag is busted again in suppressing and trying to keep Americans from being able to vote, so this is from yet another Kris Kobach contempt of court hearing ....

Federal judge doesn’t hold back on Kris Kobach’s deceit of Kansas voters

"You are under ethical obligation to tell me the truth," the judge said. "That’s why lawyers are licensed."

A Kansas federal judge had sharp words for Republican Secretary of State Kris Kobach during a contempt hearing Tuesday, accusing him of misleading the court and failing to inform voters whose registrations were previously suspended that they are eligible to vote.

In May 2016, Judge Julie Robinson issued a preliminary injunction ordering Kobach “to register for federal elections all otherwise eligible motor voter registration applicants,” whether or not they have shown a documentary proof of citizenship. The American Civil Liberties Union, which filed the lawsuit challenging Kobach’s proof of citizenship law, argued that Kobach was failing to add voters to the rolls, making eligible voters cast provisional ballots, and failing to send voters affected by the preliminary injunction a postcard that would notify them of their registration status.

In a telephone conference in October 2016, roughly five months after the injunction, Kobach made a verbal promise that counties would send postcards to voters who had previously been on the suspense list for not showing proof of citizenship, but became registered because of the court’s order, informing them of their registration status. In court Tuesday, Kobach and his attorneys claimed the judge never ordered them to send those postcards to voters, but the judge didn’t buy that argument. “Why would I order something you told me you’d take care of?” the judge said, according to ProPublica’s Jessica Huseman, who was in the courtroom. “You are under ethical obligation to tell me the truth… that’s why lawyers are licensed.”

-snip-

“These are not merely technical violations of the order; they have real consequences for all affected Kansans,” the ACLU wrote. “The refusal to register the plaintiffs deprives them of the most basic protections afforded to registered voters… Because of the Secretary’s defiance of the Order, covered voters have received no assurance that they may participate in the upcoming election or that their votes will be counted.” The ACLU claimed that Kobach’s actions could have a “chilling effect,” suppressing turnout in upcoming elections.

Rob Porter told John Kelly he would leave the White House in December after failing his security clearance investigation, but agreed to stay at Kelly’s urging, a Republican said on condition of anonymity to HuffPost.
