Former GOP Candidate Arrested for Attempting to Kill With 'Radioactive Material'

The FBI arrested a man in Town of Madison, Wisconsin, on Wednesday for “trying to buy radioactive material with the intent to kill someone,” local news station WKOW reports. Jeremy Ryan, 30, allegedly attempted to buy a “lethal dose of a radioactive substance” online between March and October 2018. The Town of Madison Police Department confirmed to The Daily Beast that the man arrested was the same Jeremy Ryan who lost the August Republican primary while running for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District in the House of Representatives. Agents reportedly searched Ryan’s home, and officials said there was no danger to the public. Ryan’s alleged target was not identified by officials, and he reportedly faces up to a life sentence in prison.

FBI arrests Town of Madison man for radioactive material

TOWN OF MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A Town of Madison man was arrested and charged for attempted possession of radioactive material with intent to cause death, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Jeremy Ryan, 30, of the Town of Madison, Wis., attempted to purchase a lethal dose of a radioactive substance on the internet to kill another person, according to court documents. Ryan tried to buy the substance in March and October of 2018.

After Ryan was arrested in the 700 block of Mills Street in Black Earth, Wis., FBI Milwaukee and FBI Chicago's Hazardous Evidence Response teams searched his home on the 300 block of Munn Road in Madison, according to the release.

"It's just bonkers to think about, it's like a spy movie come to life. Pretty small tight-knit community here on the south-side of Madison. There's not a whole lot of action that goes on here," a neighbor said.

Officials in Kansas have closed the only polling place in Dodge City, Latinos 60 percent.

Iconic Dodge City moves its only polling place outside town

WICHITA, Kan. — Access to the ballot box in November will be more difficult for some people in Dodge City, where Hispanics now make up 60 percent of its population and have remade an iconic Wild West town that once was the destination of cowboys and buffalo hunters who frequented the Long Branch Saloon.

At a time when many rural towns are slowly dying, the arrival of two massive meatpacking plants boosted Dodge City’s economy and transformed its demographics as immigrants from Mexico and other countries flooded in to fill those jobs.

But the city located 160 miles (257 kilometers) west of Wichita has only one polling site for its 27,000 residents. Since 2002, the lone site was at the civic center just blocks from the local country club — in the wealthy, white part of town. For this November’s election, local officials have moved it outside the city limits to a facility more than a mile from the nearest bus stop, citing road construction that blocked the previous site.

“It is shocking that we only have one polling place, but that is only kind of scratching the surface of the problem,” said Johnny Dunlap, chairman of the Ford County Democratic Party. “On top of that, not only is it irrational and ridiculous that we have only one polling place, but Dodge City is one of the few minority majority cities in the state.”

Turkish police say journalist Khashoggi was killed at Saudi consulate

Turkish police have concluded that prominent Saudi journalist and critic Jamal Khashoggi was murdered inside the Saudi mission in Istanbul after going missing Tuesday, according to an unnamed government official.

"Based on their initial findings, the police believe that the journalist was killed by a team especially sent to Istanbul and who left the same day," the official told AFP on Saturday.

It came hours after police confirmed that around 15 Saudis, including officials, arrived in Istanbul on two flights on Tuesday and were at the consulate at the same time as Khashoggi.

The Washington Post contributor had gone to the consulate on an administrative errand but "did not come back out" of the building, police had told the state-run Anadolu news agency.
