Romney 2011: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is ‘Immoral,’

By Brad Johnson on Jun 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Obama meets victims of the Joplin tornado.
Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”

Mitt Romney: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is ‘Immoral,’ ‘Makes No Sense...

By Brad Johnson on Jun 14, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”

Embracing a radical anti-government ideology from the most extreme elements of the Tea Party, Romney said that the victims in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and other communities hit by tornadoes and flooding should not receive governmental assistance. He argued it is “simply immoral” for there to be deficit spending that could harm future generations:

Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. [...] We cannot — we cannot afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. It is simply immoral, in my view, for us to continue to rack up larger and larger debts and pass them on to our kids, knowing full well that we’ll all be dead and gone before it’s paid off. It makes no sense at all.

New York Stock Exchange Suspends Physical Floor Trading Due To Hurricane Sandy

Source: News1130

TORONTO - Hurricane Sandy is set to overshadow the start of the trading week after the operator of the New York Stock Exchange said that it is suspending physical floor trading operations.

NYSE Euronext said late Sunday afternoon that while the exchange will remain open for trading Monday, it will invoke its contingency plan which involves trading all NYSE-listed securities on its Arca system, its fully electronic exchange.

The move by the NYSE came after it was announced that New York’s public transit system would shut at 7 p.m. EDT Sunday while 375,000 residents would be evacuated from low-lying areas of the city. Many major businesses in lower Manhattan are suspending or curtailing operations.

It’s not known when the NYSE trading floor will re-open.

US And Israel Indignant As German Parliamentary Delegation Arrives In Iran

Tehran, Oct 28, 2012

Even as the US and Israel are bristling with indignation, a four-member German delegation has arrived at the Iranian capital of Tehran late Saturday for a weeklong visit despite pressure from pro-Israeli factions to call off the visit.

The German parliamentary delegation will be holding discussions with senior Iranian lawmakers Mohammad-Javad Larijani, Secretary of Iran's High Council for Human Rights; Mohammad-Mehdi Akhoundzadeh, Deputy Foreign Minister; and Mohammad Nahavandian, Chairman of Iran's Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Mines (ICCIM).

Bijan Djir-Sarai, of Iranian descent and a member of the German pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP), will be leading the delegation. Accompanying him will be Thomas Feist of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU), Angelika Graf of the Social Democrats (SPD) and a five-member delegation from the European Parliament.

The German parliamentarians have already left for the historical city of Isfahan in central Iran where they are scheduled to arrive today. The visit by the German delegation comes at a contentious time with Tehran refusing permission to a European Parliamentary (EP) delegation wanting to visit Iran.

Millions Brace For Hurricane Sandy's Wrath

Updated October 28, 2012, 1:06 AM ET

(CBS News) Hurricane Sandy is churning its way up the East Coast this evening heading for landfall in the mid-Atlantic region early next week and a rendezvous with a wintry storm system from the west.

Here's the latest: Sandy has already killed at least 58 people in the Caribbean, and states of emergency have now been declared in nine states and the District of Columbia.

As reported by The Associated Press, Sandy is at winds of 75 mph, approximately about 305 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. CBS News hurricane consultant David Bernard from station WFOR had earlier reported that based on the track, the best chance for significant winds -- meaning 58 mph or greater -- are going to be in the area from the Delmarva, along the Jersey Shore, and right into the New York City metropolitan area. When mentioning significant winds, it means they that have a good chance of causing power outages and a lot of downed trees.

IMPORTANT Michigan: Absentee Ballot Postage

I just assisted my mother in filing out her absentee ballot which was quite time consuming (I can only imagine the lines on election day).

After the envelope was sealed I decided to weight the ballot and yes, the weight came in at 1.2 ounce hence requiring additional postage.

Please make sure you weight your envelope or just to be safe ADD ADDITIONAL POSTAGE.

Make sure to pass this around to others in the State.

PHOTO: President Obama Briefed On Hurricane Sandy

WASHINGTON (WUSA) -- President Obama talked with FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate, National Hurricane Center Director Dr. Rick Knabb, and Homeland Security Advisor John Brennan about Hurricane Sandy on the phone Friday morning.

The president received an update on the storm and directed the FEMA administrator to "ensure that all available federal resources are being brought to bear to support state and local responders in potentially affected areas along the eastern seaboard..." according to a White House Press Office. FEMA is sending Incident Management Assistance Teams to states along the coast to help prepare for the storm.

Iran Said to Nearly Finish Nuclear Enrichment Plant

By DAVID E. SANGER and WILLIAM J. BROAD
Published: October 25, 2012

WASHINGTON — Intelligence officials from several countries say Iran in recent weeks has virtually completed an underground nuclear enrichment plant, racing ahead despite international pressure and heavy economic sanctions in what experts say may be an effort to give it leverage in any negotiations with the United States and its allies.

The installation of the last of nearly 3,000 centrifuges at a site called Fordo, deep under a mountain inside a military base near the holy city of Qum, puts Iran closer to being able to build a nuclear weapon, or come up to the edge, if its leaders ultimately decide to proceed.

The United States, Israel and the United Nations have all vowed to prevent that from happening, imposing increasingly tough sanctions on the country and using cyberwarfare to slow its progress in obtaining a weapon. President Obama said last week that the time for a negotiated settlement was “running out.”

Talks this year between Iran and the so-called P5-plus-1 — the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany — have made little progress. The New York Times reported Sunday that the United States and Iran had reached an agreement in principle to hold direct talks after the American presidential election. Mr. Obama denied the report but said in Monday’s debate with Mitt Romney that he was open to such talks

Will Hurricane ‘Frankenstorm’ Sandy Affect The Presidential Election?

Hurricane Sandy has cut across Jamaica and Cuba and is about to make her way towards the U.S. Florida has already been issued a tropical storm warning from the National Hurricane Center.

--CLIP
The storm will be hitting in the last week before the Nov. 6 election, and early voting already is under way in some states.

Mark McKinnon, a former media strategist for President George W. Bush who later founded No Labels, a bipartisanship promoting group, said the hurricane is bringing the campaigns something they both despise: uncertainty.

“Campaigns are all about control,” he told the New York Times. “So in the closing days, they fear any external events that could disrupt the game plan. Ain’t no leashes for Mother Nature.”

Worst Storm in 100 Years Seen for Northeast U.S.

Hurricane Sandy will probably grow into a “Frankenstorm” that may become the worst to hit the U.S. Northeast in 100 years if current forecasts are correct.

Sandy may combine with a second storm coming out of the Midwest to create a system that would rival the New England hurricane of 1938 in intensity, said Paul Kocin, a National Weather Service meteorologist in College Park, Maryland. The hurricane currently passing the Bahamas has killed 21 people across the Caribbean, the Associated Press reported, citing local officials.

“What we’re seeing in some of our models is a storm at an intensity that we have not seen in this part of the country in the past century,” Kocin said in a telephone interview yesterday. “We’re not trying to hype it, this is what we’re seeing in some of our models. It may come in weaker.”

The hybrid storm may strike anywhere from the Delaware- Maryland-Virginia peninsula to southern New England. The current National Hurricane Center track calls for the system to go up Delaware Bay and almost directly over Wilmington, Delaware, just southwest of Philadelphia, on Oct. 30-31.
