Russian Malware Hunter Warns Dangerous Cyber Attack Could Be Coming

Source: Agence France-Presse

The Russian malware hunter whose firm discovered the Flame virus said Wednesday there could be plenty more malicious code out there, and warned he feared a disastrous cyber attack could be coming.

“It’s quite logical that there are new cyber weapons designed, and maybe already computers infected that we don’t know about,” Eugene Kaspersky, founder of Kaspersky Lab, said on the fringes of a Tel Aviv University cyber security conference.

Kaspersky Lab, one of the world’s biggest producers of anti-virus software, said its experts discovered Flame during an investigation prompted by the International Telecommunication Union.

Iran appears to have been the main target of the attack which was discovered just a month after the Islamic republic said it halted the spread of a data-deleting virus targeting computer servers in its oil sector.

House GOP Seeks To Block FCC On Political Ads

(06-06) 11:43 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

Republicans controlling the House moved Wednesday to block a new Federal Communications Commission rule requiring TV stations to disclose online information about political ad buys by candidates, political parties and outside groups.

The FCC adopted the rule in April over protests from the nation's broadcasters, who especially objected to having advertising rates disclosed online. The information is already publicly available, but only if one visits a TV station in person to examine it.

The effort to block the FCC rule comes on a bill to fund the agency. It was approved by a House Appropriations panel by voice vote after Democrats lost a party-line vote to strip the FCC provisions from the underlying bill.

House Democrats opposed the move and accused Republicans of seeking to shield large, GOP-leaning political groups from having to reveal information about their ad buys and tactics.

Economy Grew At 'Moderate Pace' In April And May, Federal Reserve Says

Source: National Public Radio

Anecdotal reports from across the nation "suggest overall economic activity expanded at a moderate pace" from early April through late May, the Federal Reserve just reported.

In its "beige book" review of conditions around the country, the Fed said the only one of its 12 bank districts to report slower growth was Philadelphia.

The report also adds that: "Wage pressures overall were modest. Hiring was steady or increased slightly, and contacts in a number of Districts reported difficulties in finding qualified workers, particularly those with specialized skills. Price inflation remained modest across Districts, and overall cost pressures eased as the price of energy inputs declined."

And its introduction ends with this: "Economic outlooks remain positive, but contacts were slightly more guarded in their optimism."

Is Bill Clinton Deliberately Sabotaging Barack Obama?

WASHINGTON - Is Bill Clinton deliberately sabotaging U.S. President Barack Obama?

That was the big question in the U.S. capital on Wednesday, the day after the former president once again parted ways with the Obama campaign on a crucial election issue — the extension of the George W. Bush-era tax cuts.

Clinton, who's been campaigning for Obama ahead of the November election, told CNBC that those tax cuts should be extended temporarily at the end of the year, even for the wealthiest Americans.

That's in direct opposition to the Obama administration's approach to slashing the country's mammoth US$15.7 trillion national debt. The White House wants those tax cuts to expire for Americans earning more than $250,000 a year, saying the country's richest people must contribute to efforts to rein in ballooning federal deficits.

Alan Dershowitz Says Zimmerman Prosecutor Went On '40-Minute Rant,' Threatened To Sue Harvard

By Jeff Weiner, Orlando Sentinel

Famed attorney and legal commentator Alan Dershowitz has been one of the harshest critics of State Attorney Angela Corey's approach to prosecuting George Zimmerman. According to Dershowitz, Corey is none too pleased.

In a column posted on Newsmax.com yesterday, Dershowitz says Corey called Harvard Law School, where he is a professor, and "proceeded to engage in a 40-minute rant, during which she threatened to sue Harvard Law School, to try to get me disciplined by the Bar Association and to file charges against me for libel and slander."

When the school explained Dershowitz has a right to express his opinions, Corey "persisted in her nonstop whining," he writes, "claiming that she is prohibited from responding to my attacks by the rules of professional responsibility."

Dershowitz has been critical of Corey since she charged Zimmerman with second-degree murder in April. He says the probable cause affidavit she filed to support that charge omitted key facts and contained "half truths."

Pelley Marks 1st Year As 'CBS Evening News' Anchor

(06-06) 08:40 PDT NEW YORK, (AP) --

As Scott Pelley marks his first year as anchor of the "CBS Evening News," he's got his eye on the top of the mountain.

"I've got a lot of confidence that we're going to bring this broadcast to No. 1," said Pelley, whose first evening newscast was June 6, 2011.

That would definitely be an achievement for CBS News, where the division's signature broadcast has been a consistent third behind NBC and ABC dating back to the late 1990s — through anchors Dan Rather, Bob Schieffer, Katie Couric and now Pelley..

--CLIP
Pelley said his first priority was to set a new tone for the newscast, wanting it to be a place where a viewer could tune in and feel connected to the most important stories in the world each day. It has concentrated heavily on jobs and the economy, and now the European economic crisis, said Patricia Shevlin, the broadcast's executive producer. One example this week was a story by reporter Clarissa Ward this week on economic problems in Spain.

Israel's Netanyahu Announces Construction Of 300 New Settler Homes In West Bank

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel's prime minister on Wednesday ordered construction of 300 new homes in a West Bank settlement, a move aimed at placating settler anger over the planned demolition of an illegally built outpost nearby.

The decision infuriated the Palestinians, who have refused to conduct peace talks while Israel expands its settlements on occupied land. It also risked drawing an international backlash.

Netanyahu has been grappling with a domestic crisis over the unauthorized settlement outpost of Ulpana. The Supreme Court has ordered the five apartment buildings in the outpost to be removed by July 1 after determining they were built on private Palestinian land.

Netanyahu has said he would honor the ruling, while Jewish settlers and their hard-line allies in Netanyahu's government have vowed to resist the order.

Turkey's Erdogan Slams Israel Over 'Open-Air Prison' In Gaza

AFP - Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday used his keynote address at a regional World Economic Forum meeting to slam Israel over conditions in the Gaza Strip.

"People are being jailed in the world's largest open-air prison," Erdogan said, referring to Israel's nearly six-year-old blockade of Gaza, one of the issues that has led to a crumbling of ties between onetime allies.

In 2009, Erdogan provoked a spat with Israeli President Shimon Peres and stormed out of an annual WEF meeting in Davos, Switzerland, after accusing Israel of "murdering innocents by air strikes."

A staunch supporter of a sovereign Palestinian state, Erdogan on Tuesday also called on business people to channel investment to impoverished parts of the world, including the occupied Palestinian Territories.

Senate Democrats Blast National Security Leak On Iran Cyberattack

By Jeremy Herb - 06/05/12 03:02 PM ET

The Democratic chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday expressed worry that leaks to the press about a cyberattack authorized by the Obama administration on Iran could lead to a counterattack on the United States.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) joined other senior Senate Democrats in expressing serious concerns about the leak, which detailed a cyberattack intended to hamper Iran's nuclear program. Some Republicans argue the information was leaked to help President Obama's reelection campaign.

Feinstein said the fact that the United States is launching cyberattacks against other countries could “to some extent” provide justification for cyberattacks against the United States.

“This is like an avalanche. It is very detrimental and candidly, I found it very concerning,” Feinstein told reporters Tuesday. “There’s no question that this kind of thing hurts our country.”

Dems Cry Foul Early Into Election Day; Sen. Taylor Demands Investigation

With only about four hours into the Election Day voting, members of the Milwaukee Democratic Party claim that calls are going out to voters telling them if they'd signed the recall, they didn't need to vote today.

Milwaukee County Dem Chair Sachin Chheda said that Walker supporters can't get through the day without "cheating."

“This latest lowlife sleaze comes on the heels of countless reports from around the state of various Republican dirty tricks on behalf of Walker," Chheda said in a statement. "For instance, reports surfaced last weekend that Walker supporters are paying homeowners to post Walker signs on their lawns."
