SouthernLiberal's JournalI am no longer a Catholic
My movement away from the church was slow, but inevitable.
In grade school (Catholic school) it was made clear to us that if a man intended to rape us, the holy, and pleasing to God action was to make him kill us instead.
By high school, I was in public school, and attending religion classes at church once a week. In one class, we were taught that the sin of a rapist was having sex outside of marriage. Being raped, though, was worse. Not only had the victim also had sex outside of marriage, but she had also been a 'occasion of sin' by tempting the rapist to attack her.
Beyond that, there were not such clear things, but just and endless narrative of how evil women are. Don't dress provocatively, whatever that mean today. Don't cover up too little, but not too much, either. You owe your future husband your virginity.
Sometime in college, it became too much. I could no longer believe in a church that hated me so much.
