Bernie Sanders and crew lead 'symbolic march' to Dem dinner

As U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders wrapped up an outdoor rally Saturday evening, he readied his supporters to cross the Women of Achievement Bridge spanning the Des Moines River.

The walk over to Hy-Vee Hall for the Iowa Democratic Party's Jefferson Jackson Dinner was short. But Sanders said he and hundreds of marchers were making a big statement.

"This march will not only get us to the event tonight, it is a symbolic march," Sanders said. &quot It) makes me think about the great marches for civil rights, immigration reform, social justice, addressing our environmental crises. This is a march which will end up in a year when you will join me in the White House."

"What this campaign is about is not just electing a president," he said. "It is transforming America — that's what this campaign is about."

Weekly Address: Protecting our Planet for Future Generations

Source: White House

In this week's address, the President laid out the importance of serving as good stewards of the environment and maintaining the planet for generations to come. Since taking office the President has prioritized protecting the places that make America special. He has repeatedly said that no challenge poses a greater threat to our future than a changing climate, which is why he’s taken bold actions at home and encouraged historic action abroad on the issue. In his address, he encouraged Congress to reauthorize and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund which has protected more than 5 million acres of land for more than half a century, without costing taxpayers a dime. Republicans in Congress let the fund expire despite strong bipartisan support. And he reminded us that we all have to do our part to address climate change, promote clean energy and energy efficiency, and ensure a cleaner, more stable environment for future generations.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2015/10/24/weekly-address-protecting-our-planet-future-generations

Our country is home to some of the most beautiful God-given landscapes in the world. We’re blessed with natural treasures – from the Grand Tetons to the Grand Canyon; from lush forests and vast deserts to lakes and rivers teeming with wildlife. And it’s our responsibility to protect these treasures for future generations, just as previous generations protected them for us.

Since taking office, I’ve set aside more than 260 million acres of public lands and waters – more than any President in history. Last month, we announced that 11 states had come together with ranchers, and industry groups to protect a threatened species – the sage grouse – without jeopardizing local economies. Two weeks ago, we announced that we’re creating one new marine sanctuary on the Potomac River in Maryland, and another along Lake Michigan in Wisconsin – part of unprecedented efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay and the Great Lakes. We also joined a coalition of countries cracking down on illegal fishing that threatens jobs and food security around the globe. And I’m going to keep protecting the places that make America special, and the livelihoods of those who depend on them.

We’ll also keep doing what we can to prevent the worst effects of climate change before it’s too late. Over the past six years, we’ve led by example, generating more clean energy and lowering our carbon emissions. Our businesses have stepped up in a big way, including just this past week. Some of our biggest companies made new commitments to act on climate – not just because it’s good for the planet, but because it’s good for their bottom line.

This is how America is leading on the environment. And because America is leading by example, 150 countries, representing over 85% of global emissions, have now laid out plans to reduce their levels of the harmful carbon pollution that warms our planet. And it gives us great momentum going into Paris this December, where the world needs to come together and build on these individual commitments with an ambitious, long-term agreement to protect this Earth for our kids.

Now Congress has to do its job. This month, even as Republicans in Congress barely managed to keep our government open, they shut down something called the Land and Water Conservation Fund. For more than half a century, this fund has protected more than 5 million acres of land – from playgrounds to parks to priceless landscapes – all without costing taxpayers a dime. Nearly every single county in America has benefited from this program. It has bipartisan support in both the House and the Senate. Republicans in Congress should reauthorize and fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund without delay.

After all, as Pope Francis reminds us so eloquently, this planet is a gift from God – and our common home. We should leave it to our kids in better shape than we found it.

Elizabeth Warren And Bernie Sanders Embarrass Hapless Vulture Fund Investors

"When you make a risky investment you should not expect to get 100% percent back on your dollar." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/elizabeth-warren-bernie-sanders-puerto-rico_56294d37e4b0aac0b8fc4a02

Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called on the federal government Thursday to curb the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico by cracking down on vulture fund investors.

"Wall Street should not be believing that they can get blood from a stone," Sanders said. "When people are suffering and hurting, you cannot continue to squeeze them."

"They want Puerto Rico to raise taxes, cut health care, fire teachers, cut pensions, sell off $4 billion worth of government buildings, privatize public ports, close neighborhood schools and cut support for the University of Puerto Rico, all so these vulture funds can squeeze out more profit," Warren noted.

(snip)
"Treasury needs to step up and show more leadership here," Warren said. "When the banks were in trouble, Treasury did a lot more than just bail them out. Treasury stretched the limits of its authority to make sure that the banks stayed afloat. It helped broker deals between banks. It applied pressure to get parties to accept deals they may not have liked very much."

Band shows Bernie Sanders support through song

Sarah Curtis has a passion for fashion. She helps run her mom's consignment shop, Main Street Exchange, in downtown Saranac Lake.

"We have fun, you know, our customers come in regularly just to say hi to us, to say hi to the animals," Curtis said.

Even for people who don't live in Saranac Lake, Curtis might look familiar. She's one of the lead vocalists in the Saranac Lake swing band Crackin' Foxy. The band has recently become popular online with their song "Mr. Sanders," a tribute to the band's favorite presidential hopeful.

(snip)
"I've always been poor and so have a lot of my friends, so we all struggle with health care, and we struggle with paying for education. It would be nice to see some changes that would help regular people out," Curtis said.

Prominent Dreamer Cesar Vargas Joins Bernie Sanders Campaign

Cesar Vargas, a leading undocumented activist, joined Sen. Bernie Sanders' campaign on Thursday, Vargas' advocacy group announced -- another sign the senator's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination is ramping up its efforts on immigration and the Latino vote.

Vargas is a co-founder of the Dream Action Coalition, which is led by young undocumented immigrants, or Dreamers. The group has been heavily critical of Republicans on immigration, but has also chastised President Barack Obama over deportations and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, one of Sanders' opponents, over donations from private prison lobbyists.

Dream Action Coalition has applauded Sanders for his efforts to ban government contracts for private prison companies, which also operate many immigrant detention centers.

Neither the Sanders campaign nor Vargas responded to a request for comment. Dream Action Coalition announced the move in a tweet.

Bernie Sanders' campaign enters 'persuasion' phase

Iowa and New Hampshire voters, prepare to hear even more from Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The underdog candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, armed with more than $30 million, has hired a pollster and plans to begin running ads in the two states early next month.

After proving he can draw crowds in the thousands, Sanders is moving toward the “persuasion” phase of his candidacy. He’ll hold smaller events in the two early voting states, in addition to his mega-rallies, so he can take questions from undecided voters, according to Tad Devine, Sanders’ senior media strategist.
