n2doc's JournalPaul Krugman- The Scammers, the Scammed and Americas Fate
Many people are horrified, and rightly so, by what passes for leadership in todays Washington. And its important to keep the horror of our political situation up front, to keep highlighting the lies, the cruelty, the bad judgment. We must never normalize the state were in.
At the same time, however, we should be asking ourselves how the people running our government came to wield such power. How, in particular, did a man whose fraudulence, lack of concern for those he claims to care about and lack of policy coherence should have been obvious to everyone nonetheless manage to win over so many gullible souls?
No, this isnt a column about whatshisname, the guy on Twitter, whos getting plenty of attention. Its about Paul Ryan, the speaker of the House.
Im writing this column without knowing the legislative fate of the American Health Care Act, Mr. Ryans proposed Obamacare replacement. Whatever happens in the House and the Senate, however, theres no question that the A.H.C.A. is one of the worst bills ever presented to Congress.

Midwest and South DU'ers- Keep an eye on the Weather- Possible severe storms coming today
?v=ap&w=980&h=551&api=7db9fe61-7414-47b5-9871-e17d87b8b6a0The ingredients for this multi-day severe threat are coming together as an energetic upper-level system swings from the Southwest into the Plains states.
Strong winds at jet stream level are out of the southwest and will contribute to the strong wind shear change in wind speed and direction with height needed to help sustain supercell thunderstorms.
Timing
Friday
The best chance for severe storms will be from eastern Texas, eastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas into much of southern Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Isolated strong to marginally severe storms may also reach as far north as southeastern Nebraska and as far east as western portions of Tennessee and Mississippi.
Damaging wind gusts and large hail will be possible, along with the threat of at least a few tornadoes.
These severe storms should persist Friday night, pushing east toward the lower Mississippi Valley region.

The gig economy celebrates working yourself to death
By Jia Tolentino
Last September, a very twenty-first-century type of story appeared on the company blog of the ride-sharing app Lyft. Long-time Lyft driver and mentor, Mary, was nine months pregnant when she picked up a passenger the night of July 21st, the post began. About a week away from her due date, Mary decided to drive for a few hours after a day of mentoring. You can guess what happened next.
Mary, who was driving in Chicago, picked up a few riders, and then started having contractions. Since she was still a week away from her due date, Lyft wrote, she assumed they were simply a false alarm and continued driving. As the contractions continued, Mary decided to drive to the hospital. Since she didnt believe she was going into labor yet, Lyft went on, she stayed in driver mode, and sure enoughping! she received a ride request en route to the hospital.
Luckily, as Lyft put it, the passenger requested a short trip. After completing it, Mary went to the hospital, where she was informed that she was in labor. She gave birth to a daughter, whose picture appears in the post. (Shes wearing a Little Miss Lyft onesie.) The post concludes with a call for similar stories: Do you have an exciting Lyft story youd love to share? Tweet us your story at @lyft_CHI!
Marys story looks different to different people. Within the ghoulishly cheerful Lyft public-relations machinery, Mary is an exemplar of hard work and dedicationthe latter being, perhaps, hard to come by in a company that refuses to classify its drivers as employees. Marys entrepreneurial spirittaking ride requests while she was in labor!is an exciting example of how seamless and flexible app-based employment can be. Look at that hustle! You can make a quick buck with Lyft anytime, even when your cervix is dilating.

Surprising New Role for Lungs: Making Blood
Using video microscopy in the living mouse lung, UC San Francisco scientists have revealed that the lungs play a previously unrecognized role in blood production. As reported online March 22, 2017, in Nature, the researchers found that the lungs produced more than half of the platelets blood components required for the clotting that stanches bleeding in the mouse circulation.
In another surprise finding, the scientists also identified a previously unknown pool of blood stem cells capable of restoring blood production when the stem cells of the bone marrow, previously thought to be the principal site of blood production, are depleted.
This finding definitely suggests a more sophisticated view of the lungs that theyre not just for respiration but also a key partner in formation of crucial aspects of the blood, said pulmonologist Mark R. Looney, MD, a professor of medicine and of laboratory medicine at UCSF and the new papers senior author. What weve observed here in mice strongly suggests the lung may play a key role in blood formation in humans as well.
The findings could have major implications for understanding human diseases in which patients suffer from low platelet counts, or thrombocytopenia, which afflicts millions of people and increases the risk of dangerous uncontrolled bleeding. The findings also raise questions about how blood stem cells residing in the lungs may affect the recipients of lung transplants.
