Republicans pushing that same old VooDoo crap

Trump’s treasury secretary: The tax cut ‘will pay for itself’

The Trump administration plans to rely on controversial assumptions about economic growth to offset steep cuts to business and individual tax rates, a chief architect of the plan said Thursday.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the economic growth that would result from the proposed tax cuts would be so extreme – close to $2 trillion over 10 years – that it would come close to recouping all of the lost revenue from the dramatic rate reductions. Some other new revenue would come from eliminating certain tax breaks, although he would not specify which ones.

“The plan will pay for itself with growth,” Mnuchin said at an event hosted by the Institute of International Finance.

Assuming economic growth based on changes to the tax code is known as “dynamic scoring,” and many conservatives embrace its use when arguing for lower rates. But estimating the future economic impact of tax cuts is very difficult to do, as it requires policy makers to rely on economic forecasts that are often imprecise.

And when the budget collapses into huge deficits, they will be back saying we 'must' cut Social Security and Medicare. Guaranteed.

White House plans Obamacare showdown next week

Senior White House and Republican congressional leaders are planning another health care showdown next week as they seek again to pass legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

The text of a new bill is likely to circulate Friday "or by the weekend," White House officials say, with intentions to have a vote by midweek before the president reaches his 100-day mark.

The White House believes they are "close" to having the votes, one senior official said, but "people don't want to commit without seeing the text."

'Denigration of science is like a rot'

by Mike Specian

At a campaign rally in Bismarck, N.D., last May, Donald Trump told an enthusiastic crowd, "We're going to cancel the Paris Climate Agreement, and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to UN global warming programs." Despite the fact that over 97 percent of climate scientists attribute our changing climate primarily to human activity, the crowd roared with approval.

Their support is symptomatic of a problem simmering in the U.S. for at least the last 15 years — an erosion in respect for the scientific process. Within the last year, this denial of empirical reality has metastasized into a concerted effort by some to delegitimize and dismantle aspects of our national scientific ecosystem. As citizens it is crucial to recognize this trend, and through collective engagement, work to restore science to its rightful role of separating belief from reality.

On Saturday, in more than 500 locations around the world, including Washington, D.C., rallies and marches will be held to support science. The effort is expected to be a useful next step in raising awareness of the value the discipline brings to society.

Our country is our home, and denigration of science is like a rot. When it takes hold, it puts the entire foundation at risk. Normalizing the idea that some science is a hoax allows other inconvenient conclusions to be more easily criticized, especially those opposed by special interests.

Sodomy trial begins in small Kansas town after struggle to find an impartial jury

BY MAX LONDBERG

A sodomy case has divided a small Kansas community so deeply that attorneys had trouble finding impartial jurors, with some seeming to cast blame on the 13-year-old alleged victim.

Jacob Ewing, 22, is accused of indecent liberties and aggravated criminal sodomy, and his trial began Monday in Holton, Kan.

During jury selection, comments reported by The Topeka Capital-Journal showed potential jurors who were skeptical from the outset about the alleged victim’s veracity, and some seemed to be angling to find the girl culpable.

“If she steps out and looks like she’s 18 years old, that’s on her. That’s just how I feel about it,” one man said during jury selection.
