A New Use for an Old Drug: UVA Researchers Discover Potential COVID-19 Treatment

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Before COVID-19 ever hit America’s radar, a professor at the University of Virginia discovered a way to treat it. It’s not a treatment in the sense that the drug prevents or stops the novel coronavirus. However, it lessens the symptoms if a person contracts the virus.

Professor Alban Gaultier, of UVA’s Department of Neuroscience and its Center for Brain Immunology, partnered with former UVA graduate student Dorian Rosen. Together, the pair discovered a link between fluvoxamine, an antidepressant, and sepsis, when the immune system creates too many inflammatory molecules.

The professor and student discovered that the antidepressant reduced cytokine production. That discovery, made last year, struck a chord with Washington University researches studying the coronavirus.

The Washington University School of Medicine team in St. Louis, Missouri, studied whether or not administering the antidepressant could prevent serious complications with COVID, thought to occur from cytokine storms. They displayed impressive findings after a small clinical trial.

Imagine what this life-changing moment feels like for two people, one man

and one woman, as they prepare to become the President and Vice President.

I particularly think of Senator Harris - what a heady, phenomenal adventure!

If Trump resigns and Pence takes over for a few months, is Pence 46 and then

Biden is 47th President of the United States?

This made me smile: Festivus for the Rest of Us

If Biden pulls this out, I guess Pat Robertson's gonna have to tell God

He was wrong.

This just popped up on Twitter: Dr. Al Gross, I-AK seems to think he may win

his Senate race. Does anyone have more info on this? ETA, he won the Democratic primary - I assume he'd caucus with Democrats? Sorry, I'm ignorant.

In my utopian world, I'd love for the U.S. to have an official "results day" about five

days after election day where the country would get the results from all the states. Not a word before then. We'd all find out when the states reported, alphabetically, sort of like the way the Democrats handled the nomination from the convention.

Granted, it's not HIGH on my list of wishes, but this process as it is is so stress inducing!

Quick question: if the Senate goes 50/50,

Does a Democrat become the Senate Majority Leader because of Kamala Harris being Vice President?

A special shout out to Sen. Harris who was and is

the perfect running mate and brought a great deal of strength to the Democratic ticket.

I hope, I hope, Biden holds on and even if we don't have the Senate,

we will have the Justice Department and the ability to investigate the rats in the Senate and House, and I'm looking at YOU, McConnell, Graham, Gym Jordan, Nunes...and the list can go on and on.
