Biden administration pauses arms sales to Saudi Arabia and UAE, sources say

Washington (CNN)The Biden administration has paused arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as it conducts a wider review of agreements worth billions of dollars made by the Trump administration, sources familiar with the matter told CNN Wednesday.

The move to freeze the sales to the Gulf allies could signal a change in approach by the Biden administration after the Trump administration approved major sales

The State Department confirmed a pause is in effect but did not cite the countries that would be impacted.
"As is typical during the transition of US presidential administrations, the department is temporarily pausing the implementation of some pending US defense transfers and sales under foreign military sales and direct commercial sales to allow incoming leadership an opportunity to review," said a State Department official.

"This is a routine administrative action typical to most any transition, and demonstrates the administration's commitment to transparency and good governance, as well as ensuring US arms sales meet our strategic objectives of building stronger, interoperable, and more capable security partners."

Sources say Mike Pence is currently "homeless" and forced to stay with friends

Sources say Mike Pence is currently “homeless” and forced to stay with friends

Business Insider reports that Republicans close to Pence and his wife believe that they are currently “couch-surfing” at the homes of various officials in their home state of Indiana.

“According to one source, the Pences are staying at the dolled-up cabin nearby that the Indiana governor uses as a retreat. If so, they’d need permission to spend the night from Pence’s former lieutenant governor, who now serves as governor, Eric Holcomb,” reported Business Insider’s Tom LoBianco. “Two Republicans close to the Pences said they heard that the former second couple was staying at Pence’s brother’s place in Columbus. The one thing everyone is certain of is that when the Pences moved out of the vice president’s residence at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, they had nowhere to go. The former second couple doesn’t actually own a house.”

While the Pences certainly have the resources to buy a home — especially in the midwest where house prices are considerably lower than in the high-priced regions on the nation’s coasts — their reluctance to go house shopping right now may be inspired by a desire to keep an exceedingly low profile while the former VP is on the likely hit list of domestic terrorists.

Exclusive: Proud Boys leader was 'prolific' informer for law enforcement

Exclusive: Proud Boys leader was ‘prolific’ informer for law enforcement
By Aram Roston

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group, has a past as an informer for federal and local law enforcement, repeatedly working undercover for investigators after he was arrested in 2012, according to a former prosecutor and a transcript of a 2014 federal court proceeding obtained by Reuters.

In the Miami hearing, a federal prosecutor, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and Tarrio’s own lawyer described his undercover work and said he had helped authorities prosecute more than a dozen people in various cases involving drugs, gambling and human smuggling.

Tarrio, in an interview with Reuters Tuesday, denied working undercover or cooperating in cases against others. “I don’t know any of this,” he said, when asked about the transcript. “I don’t recall any of this.”

Law-enforcement officials and the court transcript contradict Tarrio’s denial. In a statement to Reuters, the former federal prosecutor in Tarrio’s case, Vanessa Singh Johannes, confirmed that “he cooperated with local and federal law enforcement, to aid in the prosecution of those running other, separate criminal enterprises, ranging from running marijuana grow houses in Miami to operating pharmaceutical fraud schemes.”

Tarrio, 36, is a high-profile figure who organizes and leads the right-wing Proud Boys in their confrontations with those they believe to be Antifa, short for “anti-fascism,” an amorphous and often violent leftist movement. The Proud Boys were involved in the deadly insurrection at the Capitol January 6.

The Rude Pundit: Hawley, Greene, and the Erasure of Violence on Right

Last week, also on Hannity's dumb show, Rep. Jim "Wow, I Look Exactly Like the Kind of Guy Who Would Cover Up Sexual Assault" Jordan described the impeachment of Donald Trump after the Capitol riot as "this obsession with going after the president even after he's now left office." In the same hour, which is all about licking Hannity's dinky scrote, Rep. Matt "Twelvehead" Gaetz mocked the idea that Republicans encouraged violence: "I guess they've got caught us. Lauren Boebert is giving recon tours for insurrectionists, I abducted the Lindbergh baby, Jim Jordan knows what happened to Jimmy Hoffa, and Devin Nunes was on the grassy knoll." That's hilarious because I'd totally believe that creepy-ass Matt Gaetz would kidnap a baby.

And speaking of babies, this is not even to get into the most deceitful whore on Fox, Tucker Carlson, calling opposition to QAnon fucknuttery the government's "attempt to control what you believe." You could say the same fucking thing about Osama bin Laden.

This erasure of violence by the insurrectionist right is legitimately enraging, and it's of a piece with their whole effort to simply deny reality. It's not "a view" that the election was fraudulent. It's a lie, a clear lie, in that the facts demonstrate that it's not true. You can't have an opinion that's a lie unless you're a fucking idiot or a con artist. So it's a deliberate, manipulative attempt to sow discord in the population.

If that leads to violence, if your intentional effort to rile people up to the point where they take action ends up in violence, then fucking own that shit. Either embrace it and say it's what you wanted or be a fucking adult and say your were wrong. But ignoring it or pretending it didn't happen or wasn't a big deal is cowardly and cruel and very Republican.

(Note: Of course, the flip side of this is the way in which conservatives will unrelentingly bring up violence that they can manipulate for their benefit. See: any crimes they can use to scare people or the violence at the mostly peaceful Black Lives Matters protests, which was condemned by nearly all Democrats. Of course, to flip it back, the denial of systemic violence against Black people is an article of faith for conservatives.)

Now that we know Republicans won't convict, turn it into a trial of the Republican Party

Quavering under explicit threats from Donald Trump that he will start a Neo-fascist third-party (grossly renamed, ‘The Patriot Party’), Republicans, led by the blowhard Rand Paul, have signaled there is no way they would ever vote to convict Trump for inciting the deadly insurrection that killed six people on Jan. 6 and sent hordes of stinking Trump supporters to smear feces all over the House and Senate chambers while trying to hunt down Congressmen and Senators.

Now that we know this, now that it’s clear, let’s just remember who controls the trial and the admissible evidence in that trial: the Democratic Senate. Just like McConnell constrained the first trial admitting no witnesses or evidence, Democrats are free to admit whatever it takes to paint a clear picture of the environment Trump was operating in, that motivated and aided his incitement of the mob.

Max Boot, writing this week for the Washington Post, makes an excellent point:

When the impeachment proceedings begin in the Senate, it will not be just Donald Trump in the dock. The entire Republican Party will be on trial. And there is every reason to believe that the GOP will fail this test — as it failed every other during the past four years.

As Boot emphasizes, Trump’s guilt here is crystal clear and becoming even clearer than that with each passing day. Boot notes the Center for Responsive Politics report revealing that Trump’s corrupt campaign funneled 2.7 million dollars to groups that organized and participated in the violent insurrection of Jan. 6. Many of the participants in the event itself have directly characterized their actions as responsive to Trump’s siren call.

There’s no doubt that Trump is guilty of inciting an insurrection. As an added bonus, it’s clear that he had exhausted all other means to overturn the election, by way of trying to force the Attorney General’s office to involve the Justice department in the coup attempt. Many witnesses may now be called to attest to Trump’s desperation, further providing evidence for his motives in inciting the Jan. 6 attacks.

snip//

So the cancer cuts down to the bone. It isn’t just Trump, but a culture of Republican-abetted sedition that needs to be presented to the American people on Feb. 9. Call some witnesses in from those state legislatures who met with Trump as he hemmed, hawed and threatened them. Call Hawley as a witness and obtain all his contacts and communications with the Administration before the insurrection. Same with Cruz. There’s no privilege attached, not when you’re trying to commit a crime, boys.

Americans really need to see the big picture. Let’s give it to them. And let Hawley and Trump squeal their seditious little asses off.

Georgia Republican is kicked out of chamber and loses his office for refusing to take COVID-19 test

Georgia Republican is kicked out of chamber and loses his office for refusing to take COVID-19 test

As of the publishing of this story, Georgia has 722,062 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Georgia is passing 12,000 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19, with more than 48,498 Georgians being admitted to the hospital because of the virus. Over 8,000 people have ended up in intensive care units across the Peach State. Like most places throughout the United States, the pandemic is very much not under control. Like many places in the country, the reason for this is bad leadership combined with a federal government response that was terrible from the start. Republican operators promoting bad science and attacking public health and safety measures has also eroded the efficacy of public health departments across the country’s advice.

Joe Ripley of 11 Alive News reports that Republican Rep. David Clark of Buford, Georgia, was escorted out of the state Capitol chambers Tuesday morning for refusing to take a COVID-19 test. This is a part of a set of protocols established by house leadership along with advice from the health department. Ripley, in video after being escorted out, said Clark hadn’t wanted to make a big deal about everything, and then proceeded to make a big deal about everything: "I even told leadership over two weeks ago, and last night, let's not make it a big deal, can we talk about this, I'm not trying to make it an issue, I'm not trying to make it political.” What exactly Clark expected his fellow human beings to do, stuck in a small space with an asshole that frequently doesn’t wear a mask and refuses to take a COVID-19 test, is not clear. Republicans with piss-poor health habits have put various lawmakers health in jeopardy time and time again due to similar selfish stances.

Well, radio news anchor Rahul Bali reports that Clark just lost his office space across the street from the state Capitol. This of course, is a temporary measure, and will be remedied if Clark wants to be a big boy and “participate in safety protocols and not put other members and staff in harm’s way.”

Speaker Ralston released a statement saying that “the member in question had been advised numerous times about the requirements and had refused to be tested at any point during this session.” It’s not about Clark’s feelings it’s “about preventing the spread of a disease that has killed more than 12,000 Georgians.”

A Texas judge just blocked Biden's 100-day pause on deportations

A Texas judge just blocked Biden’s 100-day pause on deportations
The state of Texas had challenged the policy, claiming that it violates an immigration enforcement agreement brokered in the Trump administration’s waning days.

A federal judge in Texas on Tuesday temporarily blocked President Joe Biden’s attempt to pause deportations for 100 days, marking the new administration’s first major defeat on immigration policy.

US District Judge Drew Tipton, a Trump appointee, issued a temporary restraining order preventing the administration from stopping deportations for a period of 14 days. Though the moratorium on deportations could still go into effect once Tipton issues a final ruling, he said the administration likely did not sufficiently explain the reasoning behind the policy change and may have violated federal immigration law requiring that a noncitizen be removed from the US within 90 days of being ordered deported by an immigration judge.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton — who is currently under investigation for bribery, abuse of office, and other potential crimes — is leading the legal challenge to the policy, arguing that it violates an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security that the state signed shortly before former President Donald Trump left office.

The agreement demands that DHS provide 180 days' notice and consult with Texas before implementing certain changes to immigration policy. Legal experts say it is likely illegal and that an outgoing administration should not be able to enter into a contract with a political ally to obstruct the policy goals of the incoming administration.

But Tipton on Tuesday said further investigation is necessary to determine whether the agreement is enforceable.

Pentagon Restricted D.C. Guard Commander Before Riot
January 26, 2021 at 11:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard

“The commander of the D.C. National Guard said the Pentagon restricted his authority ahead of the riot at the U.S. Capitol, requiring higher level sign-off to respond that cost time as the events that day spiraled out of control,” the Washington Post reports.

“Local commanders typically have the power to take military action on their own to save lives or prevent significant property damage in an urgent situation when there isn’t enough time to obtain approval from headquarters.”

“But Maj. Gen. William J. Walker, the commanding general of the District of Columbia National Guard, said the Pentagon essentially took that power and other authorities away from him ahead of a pro-Trump protest on Jan. 6. That meant he couldn’t immediately roll out troops when he received a panicked phone call from the Capitol Police chief warning that rioters were about to enter the U.S. Capitol.”

Portland mayor Ted Wheeler (D) told the Oregonian that he was forced to shoot pepper spray directly into the eyes of a member of the public on Sunday night when he was approached by a man who wasn’t wearing a mask.

Said Wheeler: “I clearly informed him that he needed to back off. He did not do so I informed him that I was carrying pepper spray and that I would use it if he did not back off. He remained at close distance, I pulled out my pepper spray and I sprayed him in the eyes.”
