Trump pressures other G-20 leaders to weaken climate goals

OSAKA, Japan President Donald Trump is pressuring some of his fellow leaders to help weaken a G-20 commitment on fighting climate change in a move that could kill chances of agreeing on a final leaders declaration.
Three senior officials told POLITICO that Trump is trying to enlist the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Australia and Turkey in opposing commitments to stand by the Paris climate agreement made at previous G-20 summits.
The U.S. has refused to back the part of the G-20 declaration that supports the Paris accord since the G-20 summit in Hamburg in 2017, but supported the final communique under an agree to disagree arrangement.
But this year, Trump is pushing allies to join him in opposition and French President Emmanuel Macron warned he would rather veto a final communiqué rather than allow the climate change section to be weakened further. Officials said negotiations would go on through the night and would likely be left for the leaders themselves to continue on Saturday.

Buttigieg: 'America hasn't solved' racial issues he's facing as mayor
CNN Digital Expansion 2018, Caroline Kelly
By Caroline Kelly, CNN
(CNN)Democratic presidential candidate and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Friday on "CNN Tonight" that his city's grappling with racial tensions would inform how he would handle racial issues if elected president.
CNN's Don Lemon addressed Buttigieg's recent acknowledgment that he "couldn't get it done" regarding efforts to diversify the South Bend police force, asking how he would then show black voters that he could address issues of race as president.
"I'm not going to present myself as the person who is going to resolve racial tension or racial inequality in this country -- that's not the story I'm telling," he continued. "What I am saying is that we have addressed these issues in my community. We have learned from that."
Buttigieg added a line that he used in Thursday night's debate, saying, "I'm passionately committed to bringing about, in my lifetime, a world where a black person and a white person pulled over by a police officer feels the exact same thing -- and that that's a feeling not of fear, but a feeling of safety."

Trump believes 'Western liberalism' literally means liberals on the west coast

Trump believes Western liberalism literally means liberals on the west coast
"You dont want it to spread," he told the world.

President Donald Trump embarrassed the country yet again on the international stage this past week during the G20 summit. Speaking to reporters in Osaka, Japan where the summit was held, Trump displayed a complete lack of understanding when it comes to basic history and political terminology.
When asked by The New York Times about Russian president Vladimir Putins comments about Western liberalism being obsolete, Trump took that to mean literally liberals living on the west coast of the United States.
I dont know what theyre thinking, he added. But when you look at Los Angeles, when you look at San Francisco, when you look at some of the other cities and not a lot, not a lot but you dont want it to spread.
What Putin was referring to, of course, is liberalism in the Western world, which consists most of Europe and the United States. In this usage, liberalism refers not to progressive or leftist policies, but to individual rights, equality before the law, and democracy and consent to be governed, in contrast to a dictatorship or populism or minority rule. In recent European Union elections, however, nationalist, populist parties have been gaining influence in countries like Italy and Poland. That is what Putin meant by those comments, not what liberal politicians in California or Washington state are doing.
This was hardlyTrumps only flub during the Saturdays news conference. He was asked by ABC News about an exchange between former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) in Thursdays Democratic presidential debate over busing. Busing refers to the practice of transporting children outside of their geographic school districts in order to help integrate schools. After the Supreme Court struck down school segregation in 1954, some black children were sent to white schools and vice-versa, in order to integrate school systems.
Trumps made clear he thought the term busing meant using a bus to commute to school.

Malcolm Nance Issues Global Wake-Up Call: Trump Is Openly Helping Tyrants End Liberal Democracy
Counterterrorism expert Malcolm Nance said on Saturday that Donald Trumps behavior at the G20 Summit in Japan has made it blatantly clear that he is working to undermine and destroy liberal democracy.
According to Nance, the United States under Trump no longer stands with the 16 ally nations at the G20 that are promoting liberal democracy, as American presidents have done since World War II. Instead, this president is standing with Russia, Saudi Arabia and China.
These are the threats which we are facing today and Donald Trump is the leader of that threat, he added.

Trump wants to seal off the Lincoln Memorial and hold a private Fourth of July party for family, friends and VIPs: report

By Matthew Chapman
On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump is planning a special, private celebration in Washington, D.C. on the Fourth of July for his family and friends, as well as ticketed VIP guests.
The Secret Service has said that this event will block off an area from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to around the midpoint of the reflecting pool.
Trumps celebration, known as the Salute to America, will still include many elements viewable by the public, including fireworks, flyovers from Air Force One, the Blue Angels, and military fighter jets, and military bands. But it is not yet clear how the VIP section will operate, or whether it will affect the sightline of the celebrations.
The White House claims that the tickets were free, and merely exist for the purpose of putting people through security screening, but did not offer the Post any information on how they are assigned or how to obtain them.
Trump has long been obsessed with reshaping celebrations of America according to his own plans. He has suggested he wants a military parade in his honor, although that event has been repeatedly postponed in the face of logistical challenges. A miniature version of it is scheduled to take place during the Fourth of July celebrations.
Five 2020 candidates tried to tour the Florida prison camp for migrant kids. They were all blocked

Five 2020 candidates tried to tour the Florida prison camp for migrant kids. They were all blocked

Five Democratic candidates for presidenttwo of them sitting United States senatorswere denied entry to the prison camp for migrant children in Homestead, Florida, on Friday, Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell tweeted. By law, as a sitting Congressmember, I should be let in, she said. While I regularly request entry, Im often denied. What are they hiding?
Mucarsel-Powell tweeted a photo showing herself, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former HUD Secretary Julián Castro, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, Sen. Kamala Harris, and former Gov. John Hickenlooper inside a lobby, presumably being told they wouldnt be able to enter. A longtime advocate for these jailed kids, Mucarsel-Powell had invited all candidates who were participating in the 2020 Democratic debates to visit the facility, which currently jails nearly 3,000 kids.
While Mucarsel-Powell and the candidates werent able to get inside, some of them did meet with advocates outside. We came here today to get a look at a private detention facility for children, and instead of being shown this detention facility where 2,700 kids are staying, we were stonewalled, Castro told reporters. We were stonewalled today by an administration and a contractor that does not want us to see what is happening behind those walls, and it makes you wonder: What in the hell are they hiding?
A facility that has done nothing wrong has nothing to hide, but Michael Garcia Bochenek of the Childrens Rights Division of Human Rights Watch said that children held in Homestead ... told us that staff repeatedly told them that breaking any rule, including something as minor as failing to walk in single file or accidentally touching another child, even a sibling, would mean more time locked up and could get them deported.
The five werent the only candidates to be blocked from entering: Sen. Elizabeth Warren was blocked during her Wednesday visit, but said that she was able to peer through fencing and glance at children walking in a single-file line. No laughing. No playing, she said. So I waved to the children. Some kept their heads down. Some looked our way and then quickly looked back down. Others waved but then put their hands down.

Purple-Haired Lesbian Goddess Flattens France Like A Crêpe

Today 5:06pmFiled to: megan rapinoe
Megan Rapinoe has spent this week enduring Swiss-cheese brained criticism from some powerful haters, but today, after the USWNTs 2-1 victory over France, there can be no slander against her. Rapinoe scored the first two goals of the gameand the only ones for the U.S.as she piloted her national team through their toughest opponent of the World Cup.
Rapinoes night began in perfect fashion before five minutes even had gone by in the game. On a free kick from a tight angle, Rapinoe took advantage of all the traffic in front of Sarah Bouhaddi, sending the ball low and through a sea of legs to beat the French goalkeeper.
Her second goal, coming 20 minutes into the second half, did plenty to ease American stress after a run of aggressive, dangerous French play. Alex Morgan started the action near midfield and, after a solid run herself, Tobin Heath picked it up and took it into the box. From there, one legendary American winger fed the ball to another, as Heath served it up on a platter for Rapinoe to blast home the game-winner.
The dominant French defender Wendie Renard scored on a header from close range to make the last 10 minutes a nerve-wracking affair, but alas, her one goal was fewer than Rapinoes two, and the U.S. advanced to the semis. Next on Rapinoes hit list is England, a clear drop down from the challenge they faced today. If the trembling English can limit Rapinoe to even just one goal, theyll have to feel proud.
Rep. Joe Kennedy III Calls For Trump Impeachment

Rep. Joe Kennedy III Calls For Trump Impeachment
Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) is roughly the 80th House Democrat to call for impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump.
Kennedys statement:
https://twitter.com/BresPolitico/status/1144667928425639938
Joe Kennedy is regarded as a rising star in the Democratic Party. Rep. Kennedy gave a memorable State Of The Union response to Trump in 2018 where he said, Bullies may land a punch. They might leave a mark. But they have never, not once, in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a people united in defense of their future.
Rep. Kennedy is taking on the bully, and making the argument that Trump must be held accountable to preserve democracy. According to Kennedy, not impeaching Trump would be letting down democracy and the American people.
The rule of law argument is not the strongest one that Democrats could offer for impeaching Trump. Kennedys argument is more about right and wrong, morality, and the oath that he took to uphold the Constitution. Impeachment momentum has not gone away, and with each Trump stomp on our system of government, momentum grows for impeachment.
Frank Rich: Kamala Harris's Debate Performance Should Scare Trump

Kamala Harriss Debate Performance Should Scare Trump
By Frank Rich
Most weeks, New York Magazine writer-at-large Frank Rich speaks with contributor Alex Carp about the biggest stories in politics and culture. Today, the fallout from the first Democratic debates.
Over this weeks two nights of debates, the top 20 candidates in the Democratic primary have had a chance to introduce themselves to a national audience. Will anything they said winnow the field?
I am happy to answer with a resounding Yes! Ill take a minor risk and guess that as of this morning, the field has been winnowed by more than half. Were down from 20 to either seven (Biden, Sanders, Warren, Harris, Buttigieg, Castro, and Klobuchar) or nine, if you hold out hope that the mellifluous but glib bros Booker and Beto will start putting at least as much effort into bold policy positions as they have into their pandering effusions of gringo Spanish. Most of the rest were dead men and women walking before they arrived onstage, merely marking time until that inevitable moment when their political lifeblood money dries up. They will soon be forgotten, even if theyre not yet gone.
Like most everyone else, I did not see the Kamala Harris rocket takeoff coming before last night. Her ascent was easily the most energizing spectacle of the campaign thus far. And her rightly canonized exchange with Joe Biden wasnt mere political theater it was substantive. By linking Bidens praise of James Eastland and Herman Talmadge to his opposition to busing, she revealed that Biden still doesnt understand that he didnt only benefit from these bigots supposed civility on legislative trivia back in the day, but actively enabled at least one plank of their arch-segregationist political strategy. He has chosen not to apologize for that failure. And last night, he paid a huge price by digging himself in further. His invocation in 2019 of states rights to argue against busing, a 1970s federal tactic to roll back the de facto school segregation that blighted students like the young Kamala Harris, sounds like something that would pop out of the mouth of Rand Paul, not a Democratic front-runner.
snip//
There was much more to Harris than her Biden face-off. She had sharp, unambiguous answers to every policy question. She was concise. She occasionally smiled and laughed (a card not played by any of the other 19 candidates). And she constantly reminded us that she was a prosecutor not just by saying so, but by showing off her talent. There may be no word that Trump fears more than prosecutor, and no professional expertise that the Democratic base is more eager to see inflicted on him. At a juncture when Trump defends himself against a charge of rape by sliming women who are not his type, Harriss emergence could not be better timed. She is not his type, heaven knows, and, not unlike her fellow San Franciscan Nancy Pelosi, she is not a type he knows how to deal with at any level, whether on Twitter or a debate stage.
I hunger to see Pete Buttigieg on a debate stage with Mike Pence. No Democratic politician has ever been so skilled at tossing the Christian card right back at the likes of right-wing religious hypocrites and homophobes. Buttigieg also implicitly took down Biden when he apologized for his own failure in highly charged racial politics rather than denying his record. Did Biden take it in and learn anything? I doubt it.
