Russia's Election Hackers Are Back--and Targeting George Soros

ENCORE PERFORMANCE
Russia’s Election Hackers Are Back—and Targeting George Soros
The Kremlin’s targeting of George Soros and his organization carries echoes of 2016, when the GRU dumped 2,500 files stolen from the Open Society Foundations.

The Russian intelligence agency behind 2016’s election attacks is training its sights on billionaire financier George Soros, The Daily Beast has learned. The move comes hot on the heels of a surge in U.S.-focused hacking by Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate with similarities to 2016 in targeting and methodology.

Laura Silber, chief communications officer for Soros’ Open Society Foundations, confirmed the hack attempt, but couldn’t provide additional details over the weekend. “We were aware of an attack,” Silber told the Daily Beast.

Last month Microsoft quietly seized a new batch of 10 deceptive domain names the company says were set up by the hackers known as Fancy Bear, the group intelligence officials and independent analysts have long attributed to Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate, the GRU. Those web addresses imitate genuine domains used for Microsoft services like Sharepoint, an unmistakable sign that they were intended for use in phishing attacks, in which a victim is tricked into typing their password into a fake login page.

One domain targets a Singapore-based investment firm, and another references the Berlin anti-corruption organization Transparency International, which Russia has targeted before. Others are generic or ambiguous in their targeting. But one seized domain, soros-my-sharepoint[.]com, jumps out as a clear reference to Soros, a past GRU target from Russia’s 2016 election interference.

An additional four phishing domains registered in the same time frame appear to target Soros’ Open Society Foundations, said Kyle Ehmke, an intelligence researcher at the Arlington, Virginia-based cybersecurity firm ThreatConnect. Those domains haven’t been seized and ThreatConnect hasn’t found enough evidence to definitively link them to the Russian hackers, said Ehmke.

E. Jean Carroll Is 'Exploring' Legal Action Against Trump After Alleged Rape in Bergdorf Goodman

E. Jean Carroll Is ‘Exploring’ Legal Action Against Trump After Alleged Rape in Bergdorf Goodman
The advice columnist and writer, who accused Trump of sexual assault last month, wants to “hire a really smart attorney” to find a way to “get around” the statute of limitations.
Alaina Demopoulos

E. Jean Carroll is considering pursuing legal action against President Trump, she has told The Daily Beast.

Carroll recently hit the headlines when she claimed that Trump raped her in Bergdorf Goodman in the mid-’90s.

The alleged assault occurred long before New York lifted its statute of limitations against rape, but Carroll said she is “thinking about hiring a really smart attorney” to pursue legal action against Trump.

“I hadn’t thought about pressing charges, but now people are convincing me that it's smart,” she told The Daily Beast. “If I get a really smart attorney, we might be able to get around [the statute]. I’ll be exploring it.”

Trump Demands Apology from Lawmakers He Insulted
July 15, 2019 at 8:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Under fire for what many called racist tweets, President Trump said Monday that the minority Democratic congresswomen he said should ‘go back’ to other countries are the ones who should apologize,” USA Today reports.

Said Trump: “When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!”

“He did not detail those alleged actions.”

NRA faces probe that could cost it its nonprofit status

NRA faces probe that could cost it its nonprofit status
The subpoenas add to the piling issues for the imploding organization.

On Friday, the DC attorney general formally issued subpoenas requesting financial information from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and its charitable arm, the NRA Foundation — the latest in a long ling of piling issues threatening to bring down the entire organization.

The subpoenas are focused on whether or not the NRA breached DC’s nonprofit regulations. “We are seeking documents from these two nonprofits detailing, among other things, their financial records, payments to vendors, and payments to officers and directors,” DC Attorney General Karl Racine said.

If the NRA refuses to comply with Racine’s demand, or if the DC attorney’s general office finds the NRA in breach of nonprofit regulations, Racine’s office can bring court proceedings seeking to dissolve the NRA in its entirety, or to place the organization in receivership.

The NRA has replied that it will comply with Racine’s request. “The NRA has full confidence in its accounting practices and commitment to good governance,” NRA counsel William Brewer III said.

The subpoenas are the latest in a litany of developments ratcheting concerns about the NRA’s financial future — and the future of the organization itself.

CHICAGO — Religious leaders across the country used their pulpits Sunday to quell concerns in immigrant communities and spring into action as nationwide immigration enforcement sweeps loomed.

A Chicago priest talked during his homily about the compassion of a border activist accused of harboring illegal immigrants, while another city church advertised a “deportation defense workshop.” Dozens of Houston churches offered sanctuary to anyone afraid of being arrested. In Miami, activists handed out fliers outside churches to help immigrants know their rights in case of an arrest.

“We’re living in a time where the law may permit the government to do certain things but that doesn’t necessarily make it right,”
said the Rev. John Celichowski of St. Clare de Montefalco Parish in Chicago. His nearly 1,000-member congregation is 90 percent Hispanic and mostly immigrant.

While federal immigration officials were mum on details, agents had been expected start a coordinated action Sunday targeting roughly 2,000 people, including families, with final deportation orders in 10 major cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami.

In Los Angeles, the Rev. Fred Morris looked out over his congregation at the North Hills United Methodist Hispanic Mission and was relieved to see everyone who usually attends the early Sunday morning service. He had been worried many would stay home, fearing Trump’s threat of immigration sweeps.

“Everybody is nervous,” Morris said. “They are angry, very angry at being terrorized by our president.”

Pence's Detention Center Visit Exposes Depths of Trump Administration's Cruelty

Pence’s Detention Center Visit Exposes Depths of Trump Administration’s Cruelty
“I was not surprised by what I saw,” the vice president said. “I knew we’d see a system that was overwhelmed”
By Peter Wade

Vice President Mike Pence, accompanied by Republican senators including Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), visited two detention facilities near the U.S.-Mexico border where migrants were being held on Friday. Pence visited one center in Donna, Tex. where men were being held in addition to a McAllen facility where children were detained.

The account from pool reporter Josh Dawsey of the Washington Post, who accompanied Pence into the facility in Donna, is chilling:

After negotiating with the VP’s office, pool was taken into an outdoor portal at the McAllen Border Station around 5pm, where almost 400 men were in caged fences with no cots. The stench was horrendous.

The cages were so crowded that it would have been impossible for all the men to lie on the concrete. There were 384 single men in the portal who allegedly crossed the border illegally. There were no mats or pillows—some of the men were sleeping on concrete.

When the men saw the press arrive, they began shouting and wanted to tell us they’d been in there 40 days or longer. The men said they were hungry and wanted to brush their teeth. It was sweltering hot. Agents were guarding the cages wearing face masks.

Dawsey also noted in his report in the Washington Post that the only water available to migrants was kept outside the fences where they were held and that they had to ask Border Patrol every time they wanted a drink.

snip//

Connelly and Ocasio-Cortez are right. Trump and Pence have made a significant departure from Obama Administration policy regarding the detention of migrants, keeping migrants detained beyond legal limits and systematically separating families. It’s a crisis of their own making and their proposed solution is to build more facilities instead of changing the policies that are keeping people detained in inhumane conditions.

GOP Ready to Drive Off a Cliff on Obamacare

I honestly don't get it. To disenfranchise so many millions of people, to hurt them, for what? Are profits for their donors so much more important than their constituents? And for the gop to do this as a unit? Are they all so heartless?

GOP Ready to Drive Off a Cliff on Obamacare
July 14, 2019 at 7:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Republicans have no real plan to establish a new health care system if the courts strike down the Affordable Care Act before the 2020 election. But plenty of them are rooting for its demise anyway — even if it means plunging the GOP into a debate that splits the party and leaves them politically vulnerable,” Politico reports.

“After a decade of trying to gut Obamacare, Republicans may finally get their wish thanks to a Trump administration-backed lawsuit. Its success would cause chaos not only in the insurance markets but on Capitol Hill. And Republican senators largely welcome it — even if they don’t know what comes next.”

Fallout over offensive Buttigieg article: Magazine's owner apologizes but a sponsor cuts ties

Props to the LCV! Perfect response to that hate-filled article; I read part of it, and it sure didn't seem like satire to me.

Fallout over offensive Buttigieg article: Magazine's owner apologizes but a sponsor cuts ties

New York (CNN Business)The League of Conservation Voters is cutting ties with an upcoming forum on climate change after the co-host for the event, The New Republic, published an "offensive" article about Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

Gene Karpinski, LCV's president, said in a statement Saturday that the piece about Buttigieg and The New Republic's decision to run it "are inconsistent with our values."

LCV, a high-profile environmental group that has spent years lobbying for tougher action on climate change, had signed on to co-host a 240-minute discussion about the issue for the current presidential candidates at a forum in September.

"LCV is withdrawing our participation in the presidential primary candidate climate forum previously announced in New York City on September 23," statement says. "We will remain focused on the important work of elevating the climate crisis in this election and encouraging all the candidates to be prioritizing solutions."

Media site Gizmodo, a co-host of the event, said the New Republic has also pulled out as a host.
The New Republic published a piece on Friday titled "My Mayor Pete Problem" that was quickly criticized on social media as "homophobic" and derogatory. It was written by Dale Peck, an author and literary critic with a history of controversy. He, like Buttigieg, is gay.

Peck referred to Buttigieg as "Mary Pete" throughout the column and suggested he didn't want Buttigieg in the White House because he would be sexually promiscuous.

Editor Chris Lehmann told CNN Business on Friday that "The New Republic recognizes that this post crossed a line, and while it was largely intended as satire, it was inappropriate and invasive." The post was later taken down.

From Al Franken

From Al Franken-found on FB

It had to be surreal for Alex Acosta to stand on the South Lawn and hear Donald Trump say that he had wanted his Labor Secretary to stay, but that Acosta had insisted on leaving. It was bad enough that what the President was saying was the total opposite of the truth. What was worse is that everybody knew it. And Trump was making it even more embarrassing by saying that Acosta had been a really great Secretary of Labor without actually citing anything he had actually accomplished.

That’s because everything Trump liked about Acosta’s record as secretary was something almost every American would hate. Acosta’s proposed changes to the overtime rule will take about $1.2 billion a year away from workers. But the President could have at least mentioned an Acosta rule that is now in effect. Say, like, the one that weakened mine safety rules, saving corporations lots of money. So, when the next catastrophic mining disaster occurs, think of Alex Acosta.

So, who replaces Acosta as acting Secretary of Labor? A guy who is much worse. From 1996 to 2000, Patrick Pizzella was a lobbyist for Jack Abramoff’s lobbying firm, the most famously corrupt lobbying firm in the long, heralded annals of corrupt lobbying firms.

Abramoff and his team did some terrible, terrible things, always on behalf of horrible, horrible people. And one of the very worst was on behalf of the garment industry of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

It’s bad. And Pizzella was in charge of it. I’ll explain it in a bit. But first some highlights: sweatshops - 18-hour workdays - wage slavery - routine beatings - company barracks infested with rats - forced prostitution – and mandatory abortions. On the other side of the ledger - all-expense-paid luxury junkets for Republican members of Congress and their families and staffers, and right-wing thinkers like Kellyanne Conway all flying first class to and from CNMI – luxurious accommodations at the fancy schmancy Hyatt Regency - golf - tropical drinks with little umbrellas - and propaganda from Pizzella so that when Republican leaders like Tom DeLay returned to Washington, the Majority Leader would call CNMI, “the perfect petri dish for capitalism.”

Quick history of the Northern Marianas. They’re a string of fourteen tropical islands just north of Guam. The biggest island is Saipan, where 55,000 Japanese and American soldiers and civilians died during the 24-day Battle of Saipan in June and July of 1944.

A little over a year later, the Enola Gay took off from Tinian, a small island just below Saipan, and dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. WWII was over, and we had let the Soviet Union know we had the atomic bomb!

After the war, the Northern Marianas continued to operate under the auspices of the U.S., and in 1975, it became a territory known officially as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. To help the CNMI economy, the Ford administration gave it a couple shots in the arm. CNMI businesses would be able to ship products to the U.S. without quotas, tariffs, or duties. They could even label them “Made in the U.S.A.” And – get this – the CNMI wouldn’t have to abide by American labor or immigration laws!

It wasn’t long before American labels like Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, J. Crew, your Tommy Hilfiger, and your Banana Republic were making their clothes in Saipan. Who would do the actual work? Why, impoverished young women recruited from rural villages in China and the Philippines and promised jobs in…the United States! All the young women would have to do is pay several thousand dollars for the privilege. And if they didn’t have the full amount now, they could borrow the money and pay it off as they worked!

The flight to the western hemisphere must have seemed remarkably short. The women found themselves in Saipan, just fifteen hundred miles south-southwest of Japan and were soon working eighteen-hour days in sweatshops under horrible conditions. At night they’d be locked up with hundreds of other women in company barracks infested with rats and equipped with one outside toilet for every fifty women. They were allowed out for one hour every Sunday. But many had signed contracts agreeing not to fall in love, or have a baby, or protest working conditions. Hence, the beatings by factory foremen. And hence the forced abortions.

Those forced abortions sometimes came from a special kind of exploitation. The women who were young and pretty were sent to work at the various nightclubs in town catering to tourists who liked young, pretty girls. Some of them owed money for their trip to “the United States,” and were forced into prostitution. Presumably, the socially conservative Republicans who were on their all-expense-paid junket were steered clear of the clubs.

I happened to write about all this back in 2005 in my book, The Truth: With Jokes. Fortunately, all of this had been carefully documented by the Clinton Labor Department, and by investigative reporters like Brian Ross, whose reports on ABC’s World News Tonight were seen by millions of Americans.

But presumably not by Patrick Pizzella. I know that because when I questioned him about his work with Abramoff in the CNMI, he told me he had not been aware of any of these sordid details. Which is odd in so many ways. Considering, for example, that included in Ross’s report was video of Willie Tan, one of the biggest garment factory owners in Saipan, speaking at a dinner thrown by Patrick Pizzella for the members of Congress who had been flown in by Patrick Pizzella. See, Pizzella and the Abramoff group represented Tan, who paid a $9 million fine to the Labor Department for abuses in the 90s for labor practices in his factories.

That’s why I was so surprised that Pizzella claimed to know nothing about those abuses when he was nominated for Deputy Secretary of Labor in 2017.

I was on the Senate HELP Committee (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions) and met with Mr. Pizzella in my office the day before his hearing. As a courtesy, I told him I was going to vote against him because of his work in the CNMI and was going to ask him about that in his hearing.

The next day, Pizzella claimed to have known nothing about these abuses. In retrospect, I wish I had been more emphatic in pointing out that he was lying, but I assumed that was obvious to the rest of my colleagues. Maybe I had overlooked the possibility that a few of the Republicans on the committee had gone on one of those junkets. Besides, once Betsy DeVos got through, it became clear that it would take far more than just having been a lobbyist for horrible people to have your nomination blocked.

One particular moment worth noting. During the hearing, I mentioned that 21 Abramoff associates had been convicted of crimes. Pizzella claimed that he had not known that, adding, “I was not one of them.”

“I know that,” I said. “Congratulations.”

Well, congratulations once again to the new acting Labor Secretary. I’m guessing there won’t be a confirmation hearing anytime soon.

Trump admin asks Supreme Court to allow military funds for border wall construction

Trump admin asks Supreme Court to allow military funds for border wall construction
By Jacqueline Thomsen - 07/12/19 06:34 PM EDT

The Trump administration on Friday asked the Supreme Court to intervene and issue an order that would allow it to move forward and use military funds for a wall on the southern border.

In the filing, the administration asked the court to lift a district court order that placed a permanent injunction on the Trump administration’s diversion of some military funds for the border wall.

Solicitor General Noel Francisco wrote in his filing that he is asking for the justices to issue an “immediate administrative stay” of the injunction, as the Department of Justice appeals it to the 9th Circuit.

The request came after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week to not issue a stay on District Judge Haywood Gilliam’s order blocking officials from using some of the diverted military funds for the wall construction.

The panel of judges overseeing the appeal wrote in the 2-1 ruling that “the use of those funds violates the constitutional requirement that the Executive Branch not spend money absent an appropriation from Congress.”

And the majority opinion stated that there is a “strong likelihood” that the groups opposing the diversion of the Defense Department funds toward the border wall would succeed in their efforts.

The Supreme Court is on recess until October, but does release orders during the summer months.
