Big win for Biden: Connecting Climate Goals to Industrial Goals

Connecting Climate Goals to Industrial Goals
Biden’s Green Steel Deal with the EU is a model for future progress—and it beats anything that came out of Glasgow.
by Robert Kuttner
November 16, 2021

On the eve of the Glasgow climate summit, the Biden administration concluded a stunning deal with the EU that uses government’s regulatory powers to marry industrial goals to climate goals.

The deal creates a club of nations committed to cleaner manufacturing technology and erects a border charge—a green tariff by another name—against countries that use dirty production. The charge is levied in precise proportion to how carbon-intensive the manufacturing process is.

The immediate industries covered are steel and aluminum, but the deal is a template for U.S.-EU collaboration to decarbonize production technologies in other famously dirty industries, such as chemicals, cement, paper, and aluminum. The deal is a triple win, in that it rewards domestic industry to the extent that industry cleans up its act. It also puts Biden squarely on the side of saving union jobs and bringing more jobs back to America. It is an industrial policy also aimed squarely at China, far and away the dirtiest steel producer.

Come to think of it, the deal is really a quadruple win, since it enabled Biden to end Trump’s poorly targeted trade war with the EU, on terms that both players can feel good about, helping to heal the breach between the U.S. and the EU generally. Under the Green Steel Deal, the European Union may export up to 3.3 million metric tons of steel annually into the United States duty-free. Shipments above that would have to pay the 25 percent tariff. Aluminum, which had been subjected to a similar tariff, now gets similar treatment.

The agreement places tariffs on products that are finished in Europe but use raw steel imported to Europe from China, Russia, or other countries. To qualify for the duty-free treatment, the steel must be made from start to finish in the European Union.

Of Course Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Threw a Fancy Dinner Party the Day After the Capitol Attack

Of Course Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner Threw a Fancy Dinner Party the Day After the Capitol Attack
Apparently neither the couple nor their guests mentioned the deadly insurrection instigated by Ivanka’s dad.
By Bess Levin
November 17, 2021

Hey there, gang, quick question for the group: What were you doing the day after the January 6 attack on the Capitol? Were you glued to your TV, following the fallout from the hellish events that had just occurred? Were you weeping for democracy, which was basically on life support? Were you suffering from PTSD? Were you staring at a wall, unable to move or speak? Or were you throwing a fancy dinner party at your house where the topic of the violent insurrection didn’t so much as merit a mention?

For many people, that last option probably sounds pretty crazy. What kind of sick individuals would be partying just over 24 hours after the president of the United States had unleashed a violent mob on the U.S. Capitol? You’d really have to be some out-of-touch plutocrat for whom one of the worst days in American history barely registered a shrug! Honestly, who would do that, you’d probably like to know. And the answer, of course, is Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Yes, while most people were still in shock about what had transpired in Washington 24 hours prior, the then first daughter and son-in-law were focused on canapés and which zinfandel to pair with the fish.

Per The Independent:

President Donald Trump’s eldest daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, hosted a fancy dinner party for members of the Trump administration and invited guests just hours after a deadly siege at the U.S. Capitol resulted in the death of a police officer, while more would die in the coming weeks. The bizarre revelation is one of many in ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl’s book, Betrayal, which details the final days of the 45th president’s time in office and his escapades as a former president holding court at Mar-a-Lago.

According to Mr. Karl, the event hosted by Mr. Kushner and Ms. Trump occurred on January 7, just a little more than 24 hours after one of the most shocking scenes in U.S. political history, and amid a staggering wave of furious resignations throughout the administration, including that of longtime aide Stephanie Grisham. But the topic was never once broached at the dinner...Instead, the party focused on ideas about the formation of a free-market-espousing think tank with the goal of appealing to Democrats and pulling their opponents away from an embrace of left-leaning economic policies that has overtaken the party’s base in recent years.

We truly love the idea that these people got together one day after a literal insurrection and the topic apparently never came up. “How’s your work week been going, Ivanka?” “Oh, just dandy!” “Anything exciting happen at the office lately?” “Nothing that I can think of! Hey, we should start a think tank! Jared, babe, don’t you love the idea of a think tank?”

The key flaw in the Wyoming GOP's case against Liz Cheney

The key flaw in the Wyoming GOP's case against Liz Cheney
Among the problems with the Wyoming GOP's rejection of Liz Cheney: She has a conservative voting record in a party that's indifferent toward voting records

So why would the Wyoming Republican Party formally reject the congresswoman's affiliation with the party? Because in the contemporary GOP, how members of Congress vote on legislation and policy measures just isn't that important.

This came into sharp relief in the spring, when House Republicans weighed whether to replace Cheney as House GOP Conference chair with Rep. Elise Stefanik. It wasn't long before some noticed that the New York Republican had voted against the Trump White House's position on everything from taxes to health care to immigration, while Cheney had sided with the former Republican president on each of these issues.

As we discussed at the time, with records like these, one might've assumed that relentlessly partisan, far-right Republicans would've seen Cheney as an ally and Stefanik as an unreliable RINO in need of a primary rival.

But the opposite proved true — because relentlessly partisan, far-right Republicans don't much care about policy. (Insert obligatory reference to my book here.) Trump and his allies — including, evidently, leaders of the Wyoming Republican Party — care about loyalty to him personally and a willingness to commit to his twisted vision and conspiracy theories. Stefanik's voting record is more moderate, but she's also comfortable with the Big Lie and dodges questions about the legitimacy of Biden's victory.

It's why Stefanik is a member of her party's leadership team, and why Cheney is persona non grata with her own state party.

TFG's Personal Goon Squad
If Trump gets back in, the military will end up being his personal goon squad.

This piece by Max Boot about Trump’s henchman and former suitcase carrier, Johnny McEntee (who five years ago was a gopher at Fox News) and his attempts to oust the Defense Secretary is just creepy. Boot is right. If Trump gets back in, the military will end up being his personal goon squad:

Johnny McEntee, Trump’s director of presidential personnel, listing 14 reasons for ousting Esper. That document was dated Oct. 19, 2020. Three weeks later Esper was fired by a Trump tweet.

The very premise of McEntee’s memo was both sinister and ludicrous — a 30-year-old of no professional or intellectual distinction, whose path to power was carrying Trump’s bags, was making the case for getting rid of a senior Cabinet officer for insufficient loyalty to the president. This revealing and chilling document deserves to be read not as a historical curiosity but as a terrible portent of what could be in store if Trump wins another term. He appears determined to turn the military into his personal goon squad.

One of McEntee’s first complaints was that Esper had “approved the promotion of Lt. Col. [Alexander] Vindman, the start [sic] witness in the sham impeachment inquiry, who told Congress that the President’s call with Ukraine ‘undermined U.S. national security.’” No one has challenged the veracity of Vindman’s testimony, which was delivered under oath. Yet Trump, acting through McEntee, seemed intent on carrying out what Vindman described in a Post op-ed as “a campaign of bullying, intimidation and retaliation” for daring to tell the truth.

The next item in the indictment of Esper: “Publicly opposed the President’s direction to utilize American force to put down riots just outside the White House.” This was a reference to Esper’s brave decision in June 2020 to resist Trump’s desires to deploy active-duty troops to suppress Black Lives Matter protests.

Esper acted after he and Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had been lured by Trump into a bizarre photo op in Lafayette Square, which been cleared by force of peaceful protesters. Milley subsequently apologized and reminded military personnel that they are pledged to defend the Constitution, including “the right to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly.” This was presumably what sparked another of McEntee’s grievances against Esper: “Has failed to exercise oversight of the Joint Staff.”

McEntee further indicted Esper for acting to remove a symbol of racism and sedition — the Confederate flag — from military installations. He was upset, moreover, that the defense secretary had ruled out attacks “on cultural sites in Iran if the conflict escalated, despite the President wanting to keep that option open.” Attacking cultural sites would have been a war crime — but, according to McEntee, Esper should have been willing to commit a war crime at Trump’s direction.

McEntee also criticized Esper for spending too much time focused on competition with Russia. Left unstated was that Trump seems to hero-worship Russian President Vladimir Putin, who helped him win the 2016 election. Esper’s other transgressions of Trumpism included insufficient support for Trump’s capricious and discriminatory “transgender ban”; contradicting “the President in SEAL Eddie Gallagher’s case” (Trump reversed Gallagher’s demotion despite accusations he had committed war crimes); and dissenting from “the President’s decision to withdraw troops from Germany.” (McEntee gave a new Pentagon appointee working for Esper’s replacement, Christopher Miller, an isolationist to-do list that consisted of withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Germany.)

The most damning and telling grievance against Esper was near the bottom of this pathetic document: “When he assumed his role, he vowed to be apolitical.” Normally being apolitical is a sine qua non for leading the armed forces. That’s why President Biden chose retired Gen. Lloyd Austin as defense secretary and President Barack Obama decided to keep Republican Robert M. Gates in the post. But Trump tried to destroy the professional, apolitical ethos of the armed forces — and if given the opportunity, he will almost certainly do so again.

BTW: Trump and Biden are running almost neck and neck in polling matchups.

Trump impeachment prosecutor Daniel Goldman announces run for New York attorney general

Daniel Goldman, the former federal prosecutor who served as counsel to House Democrats in the first impeachment investigation of former President Donald Trump, announced Tuesday he will run for New York attorney general.

His announcement came in a two-minute video in which he cast himself as a public servant with a deep commitment to civil rights and equal justice.

Goldman told ABC News he decided to run because "democracy is under attack" and hoped to use the "broad authority" of the New York Attorney General's Office to fight back.

"It started with Trump and now continues with Trumpism," Goldman said. "There is a swath of the country that no longer believes in free and fair elections."

Goldman joins what is expected to be a crowded and diverse field now that the current occupant, Letitia James, has announced a run for governor. Fordham Law professor Zephyr Teachout and state Sen. Shelley Mayer have announced their candidacies. State Sen. Mike Gianaris, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez and Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz are also said to be considering runs.

Before the meeting even began, one unnamed parent told the Chicago Sun-Times that having Gender Queer available to high school students was “sick” and “teaches kids how to be gay.”

Terry Newsome, a father who had two kids at Downers, said that his issue with the book is that it’s “liberal code for teaching children how to perform oral sex, anal sex, wear strap-on dildos. These graphic images are totally unacceptable regardless of their gender or sexuality.”

But Lauren Pierret, a senior at Downers Grove North, argued that plenty of books in schools’ libraries include sexual content, including The Handmaid’s Tale, but they do not receive the same backlash.

“Let’s not present getting rid of Gender Queer as censoring our children from sex,” Pierret told the meeting, according to the Sun-Times. “It’s homophobia.”

“Inclusion matters to young people,” said Josiah Poynter, another senior at Downers. “This is why we must have this book in our school’s library... It brings comfort to people who feel unsolved and cast out.”

Too many Americans seem more concerned with dollars and cents than with cruelty and incompetence.

What offends me—and what should damn well offend us all—is the idea that it’s the dollars and cents, rather than the cruelty and incompetence, that’s sent many of our countrymen into a rage.

Thousands of migrant families—including some from Central America seeking refugee status—were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border, and their kids taken from them and put in cages. No lawyers, no hearing, no immigration judge. Just a snatch and grab.

When critics reflexively insist that all these people came here “illegally,” they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

The process of applying for asylum is 100 percent legal.
Whether the Trump administration gave those claims a hearing or not is irrelevant. We don’t know if these people were legal or illegal, undocumented or refugees. We’ll never know.

snip//

In many cases—as many as 5,500 instances, according to the ACLU—the parent was deported and the child stayed in the U.S., either in detention facilities or placed in foster care to be raised by strangers. There have also been ghastly reports of children sexually assaulted while in custody, including by guards working for the U.S. taxpayer. Even today, under the Biden administration, thousands of children remain in detention facilities run by the Department of Health and Human Services.

This horror show is happening on our dime. Sleep with that, America.

JERUSALEM—Ten survivors of the Nazi genocide are taking part in the first global contest to crown the winner of the Miss Holocaust Survivor Beauty Pageant.

snip//

The event is organized by Yad Ezer l’Haver, a Haifa based charity that provides care and lodging for Holocaust survivors. It is funded by evangelical Trump super fan Mike Evans, whose Friends of Zion Museum in Jerusalem is hosting the gala.

Evans is best known for his fanatical support of former President Donald Trump and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Last June, he warned that Israel was likely to lose the support of American evangelicals if it allowed “rabid dogs” Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid—now the country’s prime minister and foreign minister—to “crucify” Netanyahu.

snip//

One man who will not be attending is Jerusalemite Rami Ostrovsky, whose mother, Miriam Ostrovsky, survived multiple Nazi extermination camps as a teenager, said he saw an ad for the event in the paper.

He told The Daily Beast that the competition is “pathetic and idiotic and exploitative of the Holocaust.”

“It is not clear to me what it’s purpose is, but I’ll bet there is money behind it,”
he said. The Friends of Zion Museum, which is virtually unknown to Israelis, is located in Rivlin square, a large city square in downtown Jerusalem which was purchased in its entirety by Mike Evans during the Trump years. He welcomed the former president during his visit to Israel with building-sized banners all over the city.

One of the lawyers who helped Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat has reportedly landed a seat on federal Election Assistance Commission’s board of advisers. Attorney Cleta Mitchell was on the infamous January conference call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger when the president demanded that Raffensperger “find 11,780 votes” to reverse his defeat. After the recording of her backing Trump on that call was released, Mitchell resigned her position as a partner at her law firm. However, according to Jessica Huseman, the editorial director of Votebeat, Mitchell has now been named to the board of advisors for the Election Assistance Commission—a federal agency that supports election officials to make sure their elections are secure and accurate. In an ambiguous statement that didn’t name Mitchell, the EAC said it “does not make or approve appointments to the 35-member Board of Advisors... Board members are directly appointed by a wide variety of organizations.”

The problem with Kevin McCarthy's overdue reaction to Paul Gosar
It took more than a week, but Kevin McCarthy finally commented on Paul Gosar's latest controversy. His reaction was as underwhelming as it was overdue.

More than a week later, McCarthy finally said something yesterday to CNN.

"[Gosar] took the video down and he made a statement that he doesn't support violence to anybody. Nobody should have violence [against them]," the California Republican told CNN. "I called him when I heard about the video, and he made a statement that he doesn't support violence, and he took the video down."

The minority leader made nearly identical comments to Politico yesterday afternoon.

To be sure, McCarthy's comments were not factually wrong. It took a couple of days, but Gosar did take down the video. The far-right Arizonan also issued a written statement, insisting that the clip was benign, and adding that he doesn't support political violence, despite the release of a video in which he was depicted killing one of his congressional colleagues.

Gosar also issued a follow-up statement in which he presented himself of a victim of "faux outrage," which he considers "infantile."

What McCarthy did not do, however, is criticize Gosar or condemn the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the Arizonan's antics.

As we discussed last week, the House GOP leader — the would-be House Speaker — has plenty of options. McCarthy could endorse Gosar's expulsion, support a censure resolution, strip Gosar of his committee assignments, announce that the NRCC will not support the congressman's re-election campaign, etc.
