What Would Tucker Do???

If Liberals angry with Fox News surround the building, broke through the doors en masse, rolled through the halls shouting 'Hang Rupert Murdoch', rummaged Tucker's office, shat in halls, threatened anchors, maimed security guards.

Would Tucker call that not much happening too?

Is there still a common good?

ROBERT REICH:
Is there still a common good?
Yes. And I'll tell you where to find it, and how to preserve it

We’ve gone through the shameful first anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol and of the refusal of 147 members of Congress (all Republicans) to certify all the electors from states that voted for Biden, on the basis of no evidence of fraud. So far, no political figure has been charged with any criminal wrongdoing. We’ve seen 34 voter-suppression bills enacted by 19 Republican state legislatures; at least 8 give state legislatures the power to disregard election outcomes. More than 400 additional voter suppression measures are now being prepared. And we are now witnessing a struggle in the Senate to reform the filibuster so that voting rights legislation can be enacted. All of which raises a basic question: Is there still a common good?

.................

Our central obligation as citizens is to preserve, fortify, and protect our democratic form of government. We must defend the right to vote and ensure that more citizens are heard, not fewer. We must require that presidents be elected by the will of the people, and prevent political parties and state legislatures from disregarding the popular vote. We must get big money out of politics so the moneyed interests don’t have more political power than the rest of us.

Democracy doesn’t require us to agree. It requires us to agree only on preserving and protecting democracy. This meta-agreement is the essence of the common good.

Those now attacking American democracy are attacking the common good that binds us together. They are attacking America.

Have you ever watched a wind sock deflate until it is just a sad polyester shell?

Alexandra Petri (WaPo) put it:

Have you ever watched a wind sock deflate until it is just a sad polyester shell crumpled on the pavement?

Have you ever left some soft cheese near a hot stove and come back to find a demoralized puddle in its place?

Have you ever failed to properly care for a houseplant so that not only do you watch it die, but you spend several weeks witnessing it wither, crumple and lose all dignity?

Relatedly, did you see Ted Cruz on with Tucker Carlson on Thursday night?

Is this kinda like PIGS FLYING?

Brian Kilmeade Implores Fox & Friends Viewers to Accept Election Results: Trump Denialism ‘Doesn’t Help the Country’

Enter Kilmeade, on January 7, 2022, and it’s as close as we’ve come in some time. Yes, he framed the statement by also noting that Democrats questioned the 2016 election, which is not entirely unfair, but perhaps a false equivalency seeing as they didn’t, you know, storm the Capitol.

What’s more, the extent of 2020 denialism is serious: A vast majority of Republicans now believe the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. Just 20% of Republicans in a recent poll said they thought President Joe Biden was legitimately elected.

“We have to get past questioning election results,” Kilmeade implored Fox News viewers, before later adding “we have to, as a country, accept election results.”

..........
But he finished by saying something rarely heard on Fox News: “And then Donald Trump saying to this day he didn’t lose the election. That doesn’t help the country.”

Lies are bad. A press corps enabling liars is worse.

John Stoehr/Editorial Board:

It’s conventional wisdom among newspaper reporters that we should let readers decide. Don’t come to conclusions. Just present the facts objectively. Leave the rest to the op-ed page.

But that conventional wisdom is running into trouble, namely a period in our history in which normal isn’t normal anymore. The more we cling to this conventional wisdom—to these normal reporting conventions—the more harm we do to the people we claim to serve.

That paradox is put into sharp relief by coverage of the aftermath of the January 6 insurrection. Its one-year anniversary is Thursday. The press corps had a year to soul-search, but it’s still treating the event—still treating treason—as if there are two sides. The result is elevating lies to the level of truth, making everything seem as good or bad as everything else, and giving the impression that nothing matters.
