The Education Department will cancel over $27.8 million of federal student loans owed by more than 1,300 former students at Heald College.
The U.S. Department of Education will cancel over $27.8 million in federal student loans owed by some 1,300 former students of Corinthian Colleges Inc., a defunct for-profit school chain, after determining that the students were swindled into taking out the debt, according to a government report to be released Thursday.
The debt forgiveness plan represents the first recent use of a little-utilized provision in federal law that gives student debtors the right to petition the Education Department to discharge their loans in cases where they were defrauded into taking out the debt.
The move comes six months after Education Undersecretary Ted Mitchell said the department would "fast track" applications submitted by students who attended certain programs at Heald College, a primarily California-based career school owned by Corinthian. In April, the department determined that Heald had systematically misled students and accreditation agencies about graduates’ employment rates and had shown a “blatant disregard” for the federal student loan program.
Some 40,000 former Heald students are eligible for debt cancellations, according to the Education Department. Nearly 1,700 former Heald students have applied for debt relief, according to Thursday's report. But the number of applications filed by borrowers, and the share of those that have been ruled on, have raised questions among student advocates about the effectiveness of the Education Department's outreach to defrauded students and whether the department is too heavily concerned about the budgetary costs of canceling loans.

The posters trolled the Islamic extremists by dubbing the effort "Allahu Quackbar," mocking the battle cry of "Allahu Akbar," the Arabic phrase meaning "God is greatest."
The satirical Photoshopping began on the online image bulletin board 4Chan and has since spread to Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms, The Guardian reported.
Some users have started adding toilet bowl brushes and other bathroom items to replace the weapons wielded by the duck-headed militants.
The Islamic State has relied heavily on social media propaganda to attract vulnerable young recruits and spread terror. Earlier this week a new report from George Washington University revealed that as many as 300 Islamic State "ambassadors" are operating inside the U.S., using social media to recruit fighters.

Valerie Kaur, an attorney and filmmaker who regularly appears on MSNBC, said she was waiting to board a flight to Los Angeles when she removed the luggage tag on her carry-on bag, where she kept her breast pump.
“The passenger behind me raised his voice,” Kaur wrote on her Facebook page. “I turned around. He was a white man and his face was angry. He asked why I removed the tag. I offered to explain but he said he didn’t want to know.”
She said the man instead raised his suspicions with other passengers in line, and an “alarmed and angered” gate agent questioned her.
“I explained that I was a nursing mother, but she still didn’t let me board with my bag,” Kaur said. “Her face was just as angry. I had to pull out the breast pump to show her. Only then was I allowed to take my seat. All the passengers in first class watched and I smiled weakly to show them I wasn’t a terrorist.”

What bothers me most is most people who mutter the incantation "thoughts and prayers" don't actually pray. I'm a cynical atheist/agnostic who doesn't see much point in prayer but if people find it helpful or therapeutic then good for them. What I hate is the pose. Most of these people aren't actually praying, they're just telling people that they are.

That’s how the BBC chose to open its coverage of Wednesday’s mass shooting in San Bernardino. And while the tone was certainly questionable, the accuracy was not.
The real shock and horror was the near universal lack of shock and horror.
In its place was something far more dangerous than terrorists or highly armed psychopaths, more fundamentally terrifying than butchery or bombs: Numbed acceptance, bordering on disassociation.
Democracy can survive violence, invasion and even fear, but it cannot survive malaise.
From the moment the killings were first reported, it became instantly clear that a year filled with senseless slaughter — there have been 355 mass shootings in 2015, according to the Washington Post, including two on Wednesday — had left its mark on those who report the news and those who consume it.
