KRUGMAN: On "Permanent Class Of Jobless Americans"-"Let’s be clear: this is a policy decision."

OP-ED COLUMNIST
The Jobless Trap
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Published: April 21, 2013 5

..................

So we are indeed creating a permanent class of jobless Americans.

And let’s be clear: this is a policy decision. The main reason our economic recovery has been so weak is that, spooked by fear-mongering over debt, we’ve been doing exactly what basic macroeconomics says you shouldn’t do — cutting government spending in the face of a depressed economy.

It’s hard to overstate how self-destructive this policy is. Indeed, the shadow of long-term unemployment means that austerity policies are counterproductive even in purely fiscal terms. Workers, after all, are taxpayers too; if our debt obsession exiles millions of Americans from productive employment, it will cut into future revenues and raise future deficits.

Our exaggerated fear of debt is, in short, creating a slow-motion catastrophe. It’s ruining many lives, and at the same time making us poorer and weaker in every way. And the longer we persist in this folly, the greater the damage will be.

Official: Boston suspect awake, responding in writing

Source: USA Today

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was captured Friday after a dramatic manhunt that paralyzed Boston and its suburbs, is under heavy guard in a Boston hospital.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, is awake in a Boston hospital and responding in writing to questions, a law enforcement official said Sunday.

Investigators who have been waiting to interrogate Tsarnaev are looking into the possibility that his neck wound was self inflicted, a federal law enforcement official said.

The official, who has been briefed on the matter but is not authorized to comment publicly, said that suspicions of a suicide attempt before he was captured center on the small appearance of the entry wound and larger exit wound area

A law enforcement official confirmed that the suspect was awake Sunday evening. Earlier, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis told reportersthat Tsarnaev was still "not in any condition to be interrogated.'' He said the suspect's condition has only stabilized in "the last few hours.''

Ex-CIA Deputy Director: Boston Bombing 'More Like Columbine Than Al Qaeda'

Ex-CIA Deputy Director: Boston Bombing 'More Like Columbine Than Al Qaeda'

Former CIA Deputy Director Phillip Mudd on Sunday told Fox News that Boston bombing suspect Dzokhar Tsarnaev should be charged as a murderer because the crime looked more like the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado than an attack planned by al Qaeda.

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace asked Mudd if there were signs that al Qaeda was behind the Boston Marathon bombing.

"The only fingerprint I've seen might have possible have been ideology, but not operations," Mudd explained. "But every step of the way here was pretty rudimentary. For example, if you look at some of those initial photos, you've got a kid with a hoodie and a cap. If he wants to obscure himself, the hoodie goes on, the cap forward."

"If he had operational training, I want to know who did it because they were amateurs."

Police: Boston Bombing Suspects Didn’t Have Gun Permits

Police: Boston Bombing Suspects Didn’t Have Gun Permits

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts police official say the brothers suspected of bombing the Boston Marathon before having shootouts with authorities didn’t have gun permits.

Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas tells The Associated Press in an interview Sunday that neither Tamerlan Tsarnaev (tsahr-NEYE’-ehv) nor his brother Dzhokhar had permission to carry firearms.

He says it’s unclear whether either ever applied and the applications aren’t considered public records.

But he says the 19-year-old Dzhokhar (joh-KHAR’) would have been denied a permit because of his age. Only people 21 or older are allowed gun licenses in Massachusetts.

Why Tsarnaev Should Be Read His Miranda Rights

Since several commenters are suggesting that we shouldn’t care about whether Tsarnaev is read his Miranda rights, it’s worth explaining why we should care. Emily Bazelon is good on this, but let me add a couple points.

It is true that, in a narrow sense, the federal government is free under Miranda to interrogate Tsarnaev without informing him of his rights if it believes it has enough independent evidence to convict him. But this is not the only consideration. Miranda does not require us to be indifferent about the distinction between coercive and non-coercive interrogations, and indeed its logic suggests that we shouldn’t be. Earl Warren, to his great credit, did not believe that there was a inherent contradiction between professionalism and the respect for the rights of the accused and crime control. The local authorities that relied on coercive interrogations and didn’t follow professional procedures weren’t more likely to convict criminals, although they were more likely to convict the innocent. Miranda reflected this belief, and the intent of the rule was to inhibit coercive interrogations, because coercive interrogations were both wrong in themselves and produced unreliable information.

To refuse to inform Tsarnaev of his rights — outside of the acknowledged emergency exception to Miranda — sends the opposite message. It’s the message of the previous administration — i.e. that the rule of law and the “war on terror” are incompatible, that slapping the label “terrorist” on a suspect means that professional procedures that respect the rights of the accused can’t work. This isn’t right — it’s wrong in terms of the values it represents and it’s wrong in terms of the underlying assumption that less respect for the rights of the accused means more effective crime control. The appropriate course of action is for Tsarnaev to be treated like any other criminal suspect, consistently with not only the letter but the spirit of Miranda. Coercive interrogations are wrong because they’re wrong, not just because the state isn’t permitted to introduce evidence gained from them. This is why the Bill of Rights contains the Fifth Amendment rights Miranda was designed to enforce.

Arkansas GOP: 2nd Amendment Gives Us Right To Walk Up & Shoot Representatives Who Disagree With Us

Quote of the Day

........................

"We need to let those who will come in the future to represent us [know] that we are serious. The 2nd amendment means nothing unless those in power believe you would have no problem simply walking up and shooting them if they got too far out of line and stopped responding as representatives. It seems that we are unable to muster that belief in any of our representatives on a state or federal level, but we have to have something, something costly, something that they will fear that we will use if they step out of line."

Woman Accused Of Taking Kids Around To Fire BB Guns At Car Windows

A 43-year-old Long Island woman is accused of driving her children around various neighborhoods for weeks as they shot at residents’ cars using a BB gun.

WCBS-TV reported on Saturday that Susan Becker was arraigned on charges of criminal mischief and endangering the welfare of a child, following her arrest on Friday.

Suffolk County police said Becker is accused of driving her 13-year-old son and her 15-year-old daughter, as well as another 15-year-old boy, around the Islandia, Hauppauge and Commack areas as they shot at cars over the past two weeks. Becker is also accused of providing the BB gun used in the incidents. Authorities said there have been 60 reports of damaged vehicles during that time.

“It’s more than just a window breaking or the damage of window or a car,” said one resident, Michelle Delarosa. “You could have actually hurt someone.”

1957 ?-To MLK Jr: ‘Why did God make Jesus white, when majority of peoples in world are non-white?"

In 1957, Martin Luther King Jr’s advice column in Ebony magazine received a letter that asked: ‘Why did God make Jesus white, when the majority of peoples in the world are non-white?’ King answered with the essence of his political and religious philosophy. He denied that the colour of one’s skin determined the content of one’s character, and for King there was no better example than Christ. ‘The colour of Jesus’ skin is of little or no consequence,’ King reassured his readers, because skin colour ‘is a biological quality which has nothing to do with the intrinsic value of the personality’. Jesus transcended race, and he mattered ‘not in His colour, but in His unique God-consciousness and His willingness to surrender His will to God’s will. He was the son of God, not because of His external biological makeup, but because of His internal spiritual commitment.’
