Obama Congratulates Michael Sam, WH Says ("You should be judged by what you do and not who you are”)

Source: ABC News

WASHINGTON — President Obama congratulated Michael Sam today, after he made history as the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL when he was picked by the St. Louis Rams, the White House said.

“The President congratulates Michael Sam, the Rams and the NFL for taking an important step forward today in our Nation’s journey. From the playing field to the corporate boardroom, LGBT Americans prove everyday that you should be judged by what you do and not who you are,” a White House official emailed to ABC News.

Sam, who led the Southeast Conference in sacks with 11.5 in the 2013 season and was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year came out as gay after the season, drawing national media attention to his all-but-certain path to join an NFL roster.

Mother’s Day Proclamation, 1870 --- "Arise, then, women of this day!"

Mother’s Day Proclamation, 1870

By Julia Ward Howe

Arise, then, women of this day!

Arise, all women who have hearts, Whether our baptism be of water or of tears!

Say firmly: “We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies, Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience. We, the women of one country, will be too tender of those of another country To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

From the bosom of the devastated Earth a voice goes up with our own. It says: “Disarm! Disarm! The sword of murder is not the balance of justice.” Blood does not wipe out dishonor, nor violence indicate possession. As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil at the summons of war, Let women now leave all that may be left of home for a great and earnest day of counsel.

Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead. Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means Whereby the great human family can live in peace, Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar, But of God.

In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask That a general congress of women without limit of nationality May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient And at the earliest period consistent with its objects, To promote the alliance of the different nationalities, The amicable settlement of international questions,

The great and general interests of peace.

Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest 2014

Conchita Wurst from Austria wins Eurovision 2014
Annual singing contest initially conceived in the 1950s to unite Europe following the Second World War

Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst won the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday with a grandiose James Bond-theme-like ballad Rise Like a Phoenix, before an international TV audience of around 180 million people in 45 countries.

Wurst, sporting high heels, butterfly eyelashes and a full beard, won the competition, defeating the Netherlands' modern country duo The Common Linnets.

It was Austria's first victory since 1966.

The unabashedly over-the-top contest was initially conceived in the 1950s as a fun way to unite Europe following the Second World War. Still going strong, the pioneering TV singing contest (now also seen online) continues to draw an audience of more than 125 million viewers every year.

Protest of Prof. John Yoo at UC Berkeley commencement ceremony! Happening now!

I'm sure he doesn't care. He seems to be quite proud of his record. But it's important to remind normal decent people of it from time to time. Just to keep the concept that torture is a taboo alive if nothing else.

It's About Time: A "Fiery" Biden delivers 'Elizabeth Warren-type speech' at fundraiser

Biden Delivers Fiery Speech at South Carolina Fundraiser

...................................

Biden touted the Obama administration’s record on the economy, multiple Democrats in the room told CNN, but he also painted a picture of a middle class still struggling while the nation’s top earners continue to line their pockets.

“He said we have some of the most productive workers in the world, but corporations are more concerned about their stockholders than they are about their employees,” said one prominent Democrat who attended the fundraiser but did not want to be identified discussing a private event. “He talked about how the fruits of labor go to stockholders, rather than to the people who are producing it. That the people making the money in this country are the corporations.”

Another Democrat in the room said the vice president “talked about how the system was rigged against the middle class. He said the economic realities of the middle class are diminishing, and that the average middle-class family is finding it hard to make it economically.”

Biden did not mention his own White House ambitions. But several Democrats at the event were struck by one remark he made about Bill Clinton’s presidency: Three sources there told CNN that Biden said the fraying of middle-class economic security did not begin during President George W. Bush’s terms, but earlier, in the “later years of the Clinton administration.” Biden, of course, could face off against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2016 if they both decide to run.
