Trump's next attack on democracy: mass voter suppression - by Russ Feingold
Trump's next attack on democracy: mass voter suppression
Russ Feingold
The Trump administrations election integrity commission is declaring war on voters our democratic legitimacy be damned
Russ Feingold is a former US senator for Wisconsin
............
The litany of research on voting in recent years has failed to come up with but a handful of voter fraud cases. On the other hand, voter suppression techniques, such as those employed by the Republican party, effectively disenfranchise scores of voters across the country. If the real goal of the administration is election integrity, the stated objective from day one should have been to maximize voter participation.
Rather than target minority voters with a modern gloss on McCarthyism, we should be prioritizing a 21st-century Voting Rights Act to protect voting rights and increase access to the ballot box.
Rather than voter ID laws that disenfranchise certain demographics, a new Voting Rights Act could set a national ID standard, granting maximum flexibility to voters. It could also ban felony disenfranchisement in national elections and require publication of new electoral changes to help educate voters.
The options are there to strengthen our democracy and truly protect one person, one vote. Instead, this commission appears intent on nationalizing the Republican partys strategy of one Anglo-Saxon, financially successful person, one vote.

Mr. Trump, you are a 71 year old has-been. There is NOTHING "modern" about you.

BOMBSHELL: I was recruited by Trump campaign to collude on hack, says UK cyber analyst

💥BOOM💥
***The Time I Got Recruited to Collude with the Russians***
By Matt Tait Friday, June 30, 2017, 10:50 PM
.............
The Latest BOMBSHELL:
This evening on the Lawfare Blog, ***UK cyber-analyst Matt Tait reveals in great detail how he himself was recruited by Peter W. Smith to verify the accuracy of emails, purportedly from Clintons server, that Smith had either obtained or was negotiating to obtain from an operative on the Deep Web.
Smith set up a dummy corporation to run the effort in order to avoid US campaign finance regulations, according to documents that Tait was sent by Smith.
Tait warned Smith repeatedly that any such hacked emails might be from Russian sources, but Smith was completely unconcerned about that possibility.
Smith was very well connected with Flynn and other highly placed persons in the Trump campaign, according to Tait, and frequently revealed intimate details of conversations and thinking of Flynn and the campaign that he could not have gotten otherwise.****
Other persons listed in documents Tait was sent by Smith:
The first group, entitled Trump Campaign (in coordination to the extent permitted as an independent expenditure) listed a number of senior campaign officials: Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Sam Clovis, Lt. Gen. Flynn and Lisa Nelson.
In the end, Tait saw no such hacked emails, and was dropped by Smith after refusing to sign a non-disclosure agreement. And indeed, it wasnt until the WSJ story appeared this morning that Tait put two and two together and came forward with his story.
Shoes are beginning to drop, folks.
MORE SNIPPETS:
.............
***The combination of Smiths deep knowledge of the inner workings of the campaign, this document naming him in the Trump campaign group, and the multiple references to needing to avoid campaign reporting suggested to me that the group was formed with the blessing of the Trump campaign.*** In the Journals story this evening, several of the individuals named in the document denied any connection to Smith, and its certainly possible that he was a big name-dropper and never really represented anyone other than himself. If thats the case, Smith talked a very good game.
Im sure readers are wondering: why did I keep quiet at the time? Actually, I didnt. In the fall, prior to the election, I discussed the events of the story first with a friend, and secondly with a journalist. The trouble was that neither I nor the reporter in question knew what to make of the whole operation. It was certainly clear that the events were bizarre, and deeply unsettling. But it wasnt reportable.
After all, Clintons private emails never materialized. We couldnt show that Smith had been in contact with actual Russians. And while I believedas I still dothat he was operating with some degree of coordination with the campaign, that was at least a little murky too. The story just didnt make much sensethat is, until the Journal yesterday published the critical fact that U.S. intelligence has reported that Russian hackers were looking to get emails to Flynn through a cut-out during the Summer of 2016, and this was no idle speculation on my part.
Suddenly, my story seemed importantand ominous.

Whoa. GOP operative invoked Bannon and Conway - not just Flynn - as he sought hacked emails
GOP Activist Who Sought Clinton Emails Cited Trump Campaign Officials
Peter W. Smith listed Bannon, Conway and Clovis, besides Flynn, in a recruiting document; his purpose isnt clear and theres no indication he asked for or received any coordination with them
Mr. Smiths purpose in listing the officials isnt clear. There is no indication in the document that he sought or received any coordination from the campaign officials or the campaign in general.
Mr. Smith died in mid-May at age 81, about 10 days after he spoke to the Journal. He said he operated independently of the Trump campaign.
Officials identified in the document include Steve Bannon, now chief strategist for President Donald Trump; Kellyanne Conway, former campaign manager and now White House counselor; Sam Clovis, a policy adviser to the Trump campaign and now a senior adviser at the Agriculture Department; and retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, who was a campaign adviser and briefly was national security adviser in the Trump administration.
