Hitler Created a Fictional Persona To Recast Himself as Germany's Savior

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/hitler-created-fictional-persona-to-recast-himself-as-germanys-savior-180967790/

But publishing such a self-aggrandizing portrait would have repelled Germany’s traditional conservatives, so Hitler searched for a writer with impeccable conservative credentials willing to pretend to have written the book. Doing so would come with a double payoff: Hitler’s shameless act of self-promotion would be concealed, while the impression would be created that he already was in receipt of widespread support among traditional conservatives.

This led Hitler to Victor von Koerber, a blue-eyed and blond young military hero and writer. A North-German aristocrat, von Koerber was attracted by the promise of a new conservatism fused with the youthful idealism of National Socialism.

The book—published under the title Adolf Hitler, sein Leben, seine Reden (Adolf Hitler: His Life and His Speeches)—was banned soon after publication, limiting its intended impact. Yet the book sheds light on how Hitler—in a moment rife for demagoguery—managed to rise to the top against all odds.

In the late 1920s, Koerber began issuing warnings about the dangers Hitler posed to the world. But by then, it was already too late to stop him. Once the Nazi Party was in power, Koerber helped a prominent German Jew to get out of the country. And then Koerber began to feed the British military attaché in Berlin with intelligence. Koerber ultimately landed in one of Hitler’s concentration camps, which he barely survived.

Fascinating. I had never heard about this.

New Hampshire Lawmakers Approve Marijuana Legalization

https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomangell/2018/01/09/new-hampshire-lawmakers-approve-marijuana-legalization/#23ebfa3b2a42

The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to legalize marijuana on Tuesday, just five days after the Trump administration moved to rescind federal guidelines protecting state cannabis laws.

Under the bill, which now moves to the state Senate, people over 21 years of age would be allowed to legally possess three-quarters of an ounce of marijuana and grow up to three mature cannabis plants at home. Retail sales locations would not be allowed.

The noncommercial approach is similar to a bill advancing in neighboring Vermont. There, the House passed a legalization measure on Thursday -- the same day U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions tore up Obama-era marijuana guidance. That state's Senate, which previously OKed similar legislation, is expected to give its final approval on Wednesday, and Gov. Phil Scott (R) has pledged to sign legalization into law.

The swift action by the two states represents a stunning rebuke to the Trump administration's anti-cannabis move, which was also roundly slammed by dozens of members of Congress from both parties.

A Clever Dog Repeatedly Drags a Blue Plastic Sled Up a Snowy Hill to Ride It Back Down to the Bottom

Wanting to take advantage of the snowy weather, a very clever and resourceful Australian shepherd named Secret eagerly dragged a blue toboggan up a hill, set herself upon the sled and flew down the hill with the apparent glee. Once she reached the bottom of the hill, she started the process all over again According to her human, this is one of Secret’s most favorite things to do.

Sledding!?? We finally got enough snow to really sled yesterday and Secret couldn’t be more thrilled! It’s definitely one of her favorite activities, she probably went down this hill 50 times today!

I highly recommend the Netflix series "Five Came Back"

https://www.netflix.com/watch/80060407

It's about five famous movie directors volunteering their talents to the US government during WW2 and also being near the combat in some cases. I learned a lot about Huston, Capra, Ford, Wyler, and Stevens. They produced color films of the combat (also staged combat) and other wartime scenes that are really spectacular considering the B&W I usually see.
