HP quietly installs system-slowing spyware on its PCs

https://www.engadget.com/2017/11/28/hp-quietly-installs-system-slowing-spyware-on-its-pcs/

Lenovo has only just settled a massive $3.5 million fine for preinstalling adware on laptops without users' consent, and now it seems HP is getting in on the stealth installation action, too. According to numerous reports gathered by Computer World, the brand is deploying a telemetry client on customer computers without asking permission.

The software -- first identified on November 15 -- is called "HP Touchpoint Analytics Service" and appears to replace the self-managed HP Touchpoint Manager solution. According to the official productivity description, it features "the tools you need to ensure all your managed devices' security -- and brings you greater peace of mind". The problem is, it's installing itself without permission and is wreaking havoc on customers' systems.

One complaint on the HP support site says: "It's been making my computer work so hard I can hear it like cranking away and the light in the back of my computer is flashing rapidly in-tune with the cranking. In Task Manager I can see it starting and stopping numerous applications."

It's not yet clear how the new driver is being installed. It may have come with the latest Windows updates, or via HP and its support assistant processes, but regardless, customers aren't happy. "I understand that it hoovers all sorts of telemetry data -- and I am not willing to share too much of it really, definitely not without my knowledge," says one user on HP's forums.

Lock them up and throw away the (don)key

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11/28/donkeys_jailed_for_eating_prison_plants/

Eight donkeys were released from an Indian jail yesterday after the law proved itself to be, well, an ass, and imprisoned them for eating the prison officers' plants.

The jail in Urai, Uttar Pradesh, freed the beasts of burden after four days due to an unnamed local politician paying their bail on the owner's behalf.

The plants consumed by the donkeys cost several lakhs (hundred thousands) of rupees, according to the jail authorities.

Speaking to Asian News International, Head Constable R K Mishra said: "These donkeys had destroyed some very expensive plants which our senior officer had arranged for planting inside the jail.

Has the Nazi-in-Chief insulted the Asian-American community yet ?

I think it's only a matter of time, my sympathies to all good DU'ers. No insults to whites, but everyone else ? It's coming.

Compassionate Construction Worker Drills Holes in the Brickwork of a New House to Rescue a Stuck Cat

https://laughingsquid.com/rescuing-a-cat-stuck-in-brickwork/

While putting the finishing touches on a newly constructed house, a compassionate construction worker in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Northern Ireland heard the plaintive meows of a cat stuck somewhere in the brickwork. Patiently drilling holes to better locate the lost feline, the man was able create an opening large enough for the cat to exit. Once the cat was safely out and well fed, the construction worker used social media to find the cat’s human.

I got my drill and started to drill holes in the wall until located the exact location of the cat and where it was able to break free. I then put the video on Facebook hoping to find the owner. After about two hours the owner got word from some friends who saw my video on facebook. He contacted me and I then took the cat to his home where the owner was delighted to have the cat home and thanked me.

Senator Kamala Harris: Sign now to save the internet (net neutrality)

Sign now to save the internet

http://go.kamalaharris.org/page/s/ads_petition_171121_net-neutrality

I have confidence that if enough of us come together in the next several weeks, we can make our voices heard and save the internet from Trump’s FCC. That’s why I’m asking you to add your name to my petition today:

Sign on if you agree: the free and open internet is a cornerstone of our society and must be protected at all costs. Urge the members of the FCC to vote down these new rules and save the internet.

CNN stars Blitzer, Cooper, Amanpour and others fire back at Trump in day of rage

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/11/28/cnn-stars-blitzer-cooper-amanpour-and-others-fire-back-at-trump-in-day-of-rage/?utm_term=.8c896abb651f

It was the first tweet, the apparent assault on the work of CNN International correspondents abroad, that marked a breaking point for many CNN journalists. To them, Trump’s words undermined and threatened the work of colleagues in the field risking their lives amid war zones, natural disasters and other dangerous environments to report the truth.

CNN’s public relations department responded to Trump’s tweet within minutes: “It’s not CNN’s job to represent the U.S. to the world. That’s yours. Our job is to report the news.”

And on Monday, the network dedicated significant airtime to rebuking Trump.

“We have thick skin here at CNN,” host Anderson Cooper said Monday. “We can handle criticism but we’ll damn sure call it out when it’s a lie.”
