'Are Jews People' Was an Actual, Real Discussion Topic on CNN

I am Jewish, but am I human? Sounds like a pretty ridiculous question, but apparently, it's not in 2016. That's right: A very real CNN chyron (TV news lingo for headline on the lower part of the screen) on Monday afternoon read "Alt-Right Founder Questions If Jews are People."

Nope, it's not a Clickhole headline. And what's even worse? The conversation went on for several minutes, as if Trump denouncing neo-Nazis is a political risk of some kind. Additionally, CNN made the entire issue even more egregious by inflaming the issue with an extreme headline that used "alt-right founder" instead of "supremacist."

In the segment, CNN Host Jim Sciutto discussed with political commentators whether Trump should formally denounce supporters from the alt-right. Specifically, they were talking about the National Policy Institute's Richard Spencer, who came up with the term "alt-right" to describe what pretty much amounts to white supremacists and neo-Nazis. Sciutto read the following Spencer quote: "One wonders if these people are people at all, or instead soulless golem."

It's important to note that while Spencer is, indeed, an anti-Semite, this quote in particular was not technically about whether Jews are people. Instead, he was asking whether media figures denouncing Trump are people, or if they were soulless golems created by the Jews. A golem, by the way, is a creature created by a rabbi in a Jewish folktale meant to protect Jews from anti-Semites, so yeah, his quote is still pretty terrible—as was CNN's dancing around the topic.

I have some advice for the NYT and other media outlets about covering Nazis....

(xpost from GD)

THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP

You need to lay out in excruciating detail what they stand for. Their underlying desire to murder innocent people or at the very minimum, their desire to put innocent people in concentration camps for their religion, skin color, ethnicity, political orientation, etc.

The Nazis were the very worst scum of the earth to ever walk the earth, IMHO. I make no apologies for saying that, because it's true. Media outlets have a moral obligation to make sure readers and viewers know it also. We still have monsters in plain garb walking amongst us. They need to be identified as monsters.

Homeless veteran who received over $360K now wants to pay it forward, 'I just want to do the right thing'

http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/homeless-veteran-received-360k-now-pay-forward-thing/story?id=51377241

A homeless veteran, who received a reward he never expected after he spent his last $20 to help a stranded woman buy gas, now says he wants to touch other people's lives the way his was touched.

Marine Corps vet Johnny Bobbitt reunited with the woman he helped, Kate McClure, for the first time on TV in a heartwarming interview that aired Sunday on "Good Morning America."

McClure, 27, has raised more than $360,000 for Bobbitt after he helped her buy gas when her car broke down on the I-95 exit ramp near Philadelphia.

Bobbitt, 34, said he's been "overwhelmed" by people's generosity.

A Secret Santa Paid Off More Than $10,000 Worth of Layaway Orders

http://time.com/5037088/secret-santa-layaway-orders-new-jersey/

A man walked into a New Jersey Toys “R” Us and did a little more than the usual holiday shopping.

The man, identified as Charlie K. by NJ.com, paid off two layaway orders worth $10,780.

“Just, you know, trying to bring some happiness to people. That’s really it. Help bring back to the community that brought so much happiness to me and my family,” Charlie K. told NBC affiliate KCBD.

While the surprise payment did not cover all layaway orders, Charlie K. also bought about $2,000 worth of additional toys to donate to the Toys for Tots charity, NJ.com reported. He told a Philadelphia CBS affiliate that he was looking to fulfill “kids’ Christmas wishes.”

How to Protect Yourself from "Malvertising" on the Web

https://lifehacker.com/how-to-protect-yourself-from-malvertising-on-the-web-1745588094

Malvertising is insidious, and can be delivered on a wide scale simply by displaying an advertisements on a web page. It’s usually spread without the knowledge of the site hosting the ads, and without the knowledge of the ad network the malware is riding on. That means that an email to the blog owner that “your ads infected my computer with a virus” will be inevitably met with confusion. Emails from site owners to their advertising partners will get a similar response. And it’s becoming much more common.

The article is two years old, but speaks to me.

Cops tried to intimidate rape accuser out of pressing charges: lawyer

https://nypost.com/2017/11/23/cops-tried-to-intimidate-rape-accuser-out-of-pressing-charges-lawyer/

A group of NYPD cops showed up at the hospital where an 18-year-old woman was seeking treatment after allegedly being raped by two Brooklyn detectives, in a bid to bully her out of bringing sex assault charges, her lawyer claims.

“They came with nine cops to intimidate her and her mom, to discourage them from coming forward and reporting the rape and sex assault,” Michael David, who represents the accuser, Anna Chambers, told The Post.

One officer in particular questioned Chambers’ story at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, where she had gone with her mom for a rape kit on Sept. 15 around 10:45 p.m., hours after the alleged rape and sexual assault, the lawyer said.

“He kept saying to Anna and her mom, ‘How do you know they were real cops?’?” David said.

Aussie Catholic School forced into hasty cover-up over suggestive Saint

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/11/22/aussie_catholic_school_forced_into_hasty_coverup_over_suggestive_saints/

https://twitter.com/MichaelSmyth_/status/933129625772765184

A Catholic School in Australia has been left red-faced after a newly commissioned statue of a revered saint appeared to be offering to share more than a few loaves and fishes with the little children.

Blackfriar’s Priory in Adelaide wanted to beautify its grounds with a statute of beloved Peruvian St Martin de Porres distributing bread to needy children. It got a local designer to draft up plans, before despatching them to a sculptor in Vietnam – a process it had earlier used for a depiction of St Dominic.

However, the devil is always in the detail. When the statue was returned and erected in the grounds, something was wrong, and it didn't take too long to put their finger on it.

In an apology on Facebook, principal Simon Cobiac said: "The two-dimensional concept plans for the statue were viewed and approved by the Executive Team in May but upon arrival the three-dimensional statue was deemed by the Executive to be potentially suggestive."
