Miami City Officials Call For End To Ultra Music Fest

MIAMI (CBS4) – Sunday is day three of one of the biggest electronic music events in the country.

Some city officials, however, are calling for the end of the Ultra Music Festival in downtown Miami after Contemporary Services Corporation guard Erica Mack was trampled Friday night while trying to stop a group of people who didn’t have tickets who stormed a fence to get inside. Mack, 28, was listed as “critical” but stable at Jackson Memorial Hospital with severe brain hemorrhaging.

“She was not strong enough to deal with a mob of people that actually pushed this fence down, pushing her backwards and the fence landing on top of her. Now these people started trampling on top of her just to get into the event, as a result she sustained major head trauma as well as a broken leg,” said Miami Fire Rescue Lt. Ignatius Carroll.

“What happened this weekend is an event that could have been avoided,” said Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado on Sunday. “The organizers of Ultra did not follow the police directive to re-enforce the fence, even though they knew that this year, and the year before, some kids have tried to over run the fences.”

my last word on this

If a VN veteran is going to be absolutely belligerent that the VN war was right..and do it in public..then yes...free speech...tough shit to him. You get really outspoken in public, someone is going to call you out. Fact. THIS....was what my post was about. Again, I'm not an asshole, despite what you're trying to imply here.

Otherwise...I say absolutely nothing in public or even in private. I have the utmost respect for the veterans. I'm already detecting that the VN war is a forbidden topic in public. It's like religion and politics. Someone is going to get offended. Have a nice day.

question about the VN war and its veterans

Not a troll post, honest.

Like most DU'ers, I do a differentiation between civilian leadership and the active duty military. I reserve the right to criticize the civilians, but I don't criticize the active duty military or the veterans. Like most of DU (or all of DU, haven't done a poll), I think the civilian leadership made a mistake going into VN, especially after the bogus Gulf of Tonkin incident.

Question: How does one, in public, make that point known to a VN vet without being disrespectful to the vet ? Some vets, in my experience, seem to take it pretty personally. I've never said anything critical of an individual vet, but yes, I've expressed my opinion of the war.

Maybe I should just avoid the topic from now on.

Employees and volunteers at Mozilla - the organisation which promotes open source software such as its Firefox browser - have called for new chief executive Brendan Eich to stand down because of his donations to political campaigns to ban gay marriage.

This week Mozilla named Brendan Eich as its new chief executive, following the resignation of Gary Kovacs which was announced in April last year. Eich was previously Mozilla's chief technology officer and has a long history with the group dating back to before its formation from Netscape, having worked on the Navigator browser in the 90s and creating JavaScript in a marathon, ten-day programming session in 1995.

The controversy stems from a $1,000 donation he made in 2008 to support California's Proposition 8, which opposed gay marriage. The donation was listed in a public database with Mozilla appearing next to Eich's name as his employer. It caused controversy in the technology industry when it was uncovered in 2012.

Eich posted on his own blog to "express my sorrow at having caused pain" and promised an "active commitment to equality" at Mozilla.
