Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by excessive, uncontrollable and often irrational worry, that is, apprehensive expectation about events or activities. This excessive worry often interferes with daily functioning, as individuals with GAD typically anticipate disaster, and are overly concerned about everyday matters such as health issues, money, death, family problems, friendship problems, interpersonal relationship problems, or work difficulties. Individuals often exhibit a variety of physical symptoms, including fatigue, fidgeting, headaches, nausea, numbness in hands and feet, muscle tension, muscle aches, difficulty swallowing, bouts of breathing difficulty, difficulty concentrating, trembling, twitching, irritability, agitation, sweating, restlessness, insomnia, hot flashes, rashes, and inability to fully control the anxiety (ICD-10). These symptoms must be consistent and ongoing, persisting at least six months, for a formal diagnosis of GAD to be introduced.
In any given year, approximately 6.8 million American adults and two percent of European adults experience GAD. GAD is seen in women twice as much as men. GAD is also commonly seen in individuals with a history of substance abuse and a family history of the disorder. Once GAD develops, it may become chronic, but can be managed or eliminated with proper treatment.
Standardized rating scales such as GAD-7 can be used to assess severity of generalized anxiety disorder symptoms. GAD is the most common cause of disability in the workplace in the United States.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday defended the infamous pact between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union that agreed to divide up eastern Europe during a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
On August 23, 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to carve up eastern Europe between them in a secret clause of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact on non-aggression.
“When the USSR realised that it was left facing Hitler’s Germany alone, it took steps so as to not permit a direct collision and this Molotov-Ribbentrop pact was signed,” Putin said at a news conference in response to a question from a journalist.
He was asked to respond to comments by Russia’s outspoken culture minister Vladimir Medinsky praising the pact as a triumph of Joseph Stalin’s diplomacy.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie admitted that he thinks climate change is real and that humans contribute to it at an event in New Hampshire last week.
But Christie, a likely 2016 Republican presidential candidate, also added that he thinks the degree to which humans contribute is questionable, according to MSNBC.
“I think global warming is real. I don’t think that’s deniable,” he said. “And I do think human activity contributes to it.”
Christie also said that the U.S. or a single group of states “can’t be acting unilaterally…when folks in China are doing things to the environment that we would never be done in our country.”
If he wasn't toast before, he's toast now. Stopped clock, good on ya Gov.

A routine graduation gig in Winter Park turned into the jam of a lifetime for Josh Walther & The Phase5 Band on Saturday when the bandleader turned over the microphone to a very special party guest: Sir Paul McCartney.
Video footage above captures McCartney and Walther singing "I Saw Her Standing There," a hit from Sir Paul's early days with The Beatles. The concert took place May 9 at the Interlachen Country Club during a private party for the graduation of McCartney's stepson Arlen Shevell.
McCartney's wife Nancy Shevell booked the gig with Walther's Tampa-based band approximately a year in advance, but the singer knew nothing about her high-profile husband until Shevell called two weeks prior to the party.
"She was asking a lot about sound equipment - different brands and specifics," recalled Walther. "I said, 'You seem to know a lot about sound,' and she said, 'Well, yeah'. Somehow through that conversation, she casually mentioned that she was Paul's wife ... I don't think any of us thought about it too much. We just thought it was another gig, and it would be cool if we saw him or got a picture. We were excited, but we had no idea it would turn into what it did."

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder (MPD),[1] is a mental disorder on the dissociative spectrum characterized by at least two distinct and relatively enduring identities or dissociated personality states that alternately control a person's behavior, and is accompanied by memory impairment for important information not explained by ordinary forgetfulness. DID is one of the most controversial psychiatric disorders with no clear consensus regarding its diagnosis or treatment.[3] Research on effectiveness of treatment has been concerned primarily with clinical approaches and case studies. Dissociative symptoms range from common lapses in attention, becoming distracted by something else, and daydreaming, to pathological dissociative disorders.[6] No systematic, empirically-supported definition of "dissociation" exists.[7][8]
Although neither epidemiological surveys nor longitudinal studies have been done, it is thought DID rarely resolves spontaneously. Symptoms are said to vary over time.[6] In general, the prognosis is poor, especially for those with co-morbid disorders. There are few systematic data on the prevalence of DID.[4] The International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation states that the prevalence is between 1 and 3% in the general population, and between 1 and 5% in inpatient groups in Europe and North America.[5] DID is diagnosed more frequently in North America than in the rest of the world, and is diagnosed three to nine times more often in females than in males.[4][7][9] The prevalence of DID increased greatly in the latter half of the 20th century, along with the number of identities (often referred to as "alters"

The Republicans are the enemy. Case in point: global climate change
When I say enemy, I mean in the political and ideological sense. I'm also referring to the LEADERS of the GOP in state capitals and in Washington. We live with the GOP (most of us) in our communities, so we have to get along with them somehow. The very best of the GOP (the non-racist minority) can be our friends, maybe.
I don't need to provide reams of links to prove the point about global climate change. It's here on DU and has been here on DU for months on end.
Let's stay focused on the fact that THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP IS THE ENEMY. We have to keep them out of the positions of power if at all humanly possible. Our long-term survival on this planet depends on it.
