steve2470's Journalquestion for our good Nebraska DU'ers about Sasse
Sasse said the other day he thinks about leaving the Republican Party. To me, he would either become an independent or a conservative Democrat.
Could he get re-elected if he became a Democrat or independent in NE ? Just curious. Thanks in advance.

DONALD TRUMP WILL HAVE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS UNDER OATH FROM 'APPRENTICE' SEXUAL ASSAULT ACCUSER SUMMER ZERVOS

President Donald Trumps legal troubles are mounting.
He will now have to answer questions under oath in regards to a defamation lawsuit that Summer Zervos, a former contestant on his reality television show The Apprentice, brought against him. Zervos sued Trump over how he responded to her allegations he sexually assaulted her.
Attorneys for both sides signed a stipulation agreement on Friday stating that Zervos and Trump would submit written answers and objections to questions by September 28, under oath, Law & Crime reported. If Trump or Zervos make false statements, they could face perjury charges.
The development is a stride forward for Zervos. Her lawyer, Mariann Wang, said in court on Friday that Trumps business, the Trump Organization, would not hand over discovery materials as both parties had agreed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
GOP Sen. Ben Sasse says he "regularly" considers leaving the Republican Party
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/senator-ben-sasse-says-he-regularly-considers-leaving-the-republican-party/Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Nebraska, said on Twitter Saturday that he "regularly" considers leaving the Republican Party. He made the remark in response to a tweet by a user who said she switched from being a member of the Democratic Party to having no affiliation.
"I switched my party from Democrat [to] no-party this week as I see that to be part of the solution. Have you considered following suit?" the user asked Sasse.
He responded, "yep -- regularly consider it."

Major Telecom Urges Employees to Protest Net Neutrality Bill, Claiming It Threatens Workers
https://gizmodo.com/major-telecom-urges-employees-to-protest-net-neutrality-1828896674Employees at one of the nations largest telecommunications companies are being urged by their bosses to sign a petition opposing net neutrality legislation passed one week ago by the California legislature.
In an email Thursday to employees at Frontier Communicationsa leading provider of internet, TV, and phone services in 29 statesWest Region Senior Vice President Joe Gamble painted Californias Senate Bill 822 as a threat to Frontier, its business partners, and its employees.
We are asking Governor Brown to veto a law that is bad for Frontiers business, our partners and our employees, wrote Gamble, according to a copy of the email leaked to Gizmodo.
S.B. 822, which seeks to reenact net neutrality protections stripped away by the Trump administration this year, must be signed or vetoed by Governor Jerry Brown by September 30.
Yes, Democrats do have a legitimate path to win back the Senate
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/yes-democrats-do-have-legitimate-path-win-back-senate-n907446WASHINGTON The takeaway from the trio of NBC/Marist polls we released this week is that, yes, Democrats do have a legitimate path to retaking the Senate in November. Given the Senate map, its probably not the most likely outcome. But its a real possibility more than most people might think.
With the GOP controlling the Senate by a slim 51-to-49 margin after the Dems surprising win in Alabama late last year Democrats must gain a net of two Senate seats to take back the chamber (since Vice President Mike Pence can break a 50-50 tie). And their path to gaining those two Senate seats is: 1) by winning the GOP-held seats of Arizona and Nevada and holding on to ALL of their vulnerable seats in Florida, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota and West Virginia, or 2) by winning Arizona, Nevada AND Tennessee, and losing just one of their vulnerable states. (FYI: If Democrats somehow win Texas, theyre definitely winning the Senate.)
So what do our NBC/Marist polls show? Well, Democrats lead in Indiana and Tennessee (although within the margin of error), while its tied in Missouri.
Heres another way to look at the battle for Senate control: The Cook Political Report identifies eight total toss-up races five held by Democrats (Florida, Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota and West Virginia) and three held by Republicans (Arizona, Nevada and Tennessee). To win control, Democrats will need to win seven of these eight toss-up races.
(Jewish Group) Why Italian fascists embraced Hitler's anti-Semitism.
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/fascism/2017/01/jews_in_fascist_italy_and_anti_semitism_in_an_italy_that_saw_itself_as_a.htmlExcerpted from Fascist Modernities: Italy, 19221945 by Ruth Ben-Ghiat. Published by the University of California Press.
Although anti-Jewish policies were modeled on the Nazi Nuremberg laws, they also built on and responded to national issues and traditions. In service of the fascist intent to cure national traits that had supposedly contributed in the past to Italian backwardness and national fragmentation, the Jew emerged after 1938 as a primary symbol of the forces that had consigned Italy to a position on the margins of modernity. The fascist anti-Semitic campaign shared images and legal provisions with other countries, but it also offered an occasion for the articulation of specifically Italian grievances and goals.
The Manifesto of Racial Scientists, which appeared in the fascist press on Bastille Day 1938, signaled the start of the official anti-Semitic campaign. Written by the Duce in collaboration with a group of scholars, the manifesto established an irremediable divide between Jews and Italians. The former were now defined as an unassimilable population composed of non-European racial elements and the latter as a pure people of Aryan origin and civilization. While the document warned that Italian racism recognized only racial differences, as against German ideals of racial superiority, it legitimized anti-Semitic prejudice by inviting Italians to proclaim themselves openly racist. In subsequent communications, the Duce proclaimed his intention to adjust Jewish participation in the state to reflect Jews minority status, even as he admonished his audience that discrimination does not mean persecution.
A September decree marked the start of this discrimination process. It forbade Jews to teach or attend schools and universities (those currently enrolled in postsecondary schools were allowed to finish their degrees) and expelled them from academies and cultural institutions. The minister of education Giuseppe Bottai, writing in a ministerial bulletin, Vita universitaria, publicized the names of Jewish professors who had been terminated and expressed unconditional admiration for a measure that would liberate us from a treacherous people, rejuvenate the University, and purify the race.6 To underscore the primacy of nation over race in Italian doctrine, exceptions were granted for proven patriots and others Jews of exceptional merit, and the juridical category of Aryanized Jew exempted politically meritorious and appropriately non-Jewish Jews.
The reason why I posted this is because I had always thought Italian fascism was devoid of anti-semitism. I then watched a documentary on Mussolini and it said that, no, Italian anti-semitism was not totally devoid of anti-semitism. From what I know, it was just much less extreme than Hitler's brand.
a short rant about Trumpers
I've had some time on my hands lately to watch CNN and MSNBC. Those of you who can stomach Faux to see what the opposition says, bless you. I can't do it. But I digress....
Yes, I know I could turn the channel and not watch Trumpers' BS. Lately I've had more patience. I swear, these Trumpers remind me of hard-core Nazis loyal to the very end to Hitler. The rest of humanity could see how horrible Hitler was (or, bare minimum, what a military loser he was) and left his cause and surrendered or deserted, etc. Eva Braun stuck around, Goebbels stuck around, Donitz stuck around and some others stuck around. We all know what happened to them (Hitler and Braun = suicide, Goebbels and his family = suicide, Donitz = arrested and 10 years in prison).
They are beyond hope. I get the money for some of these idiots is really good or they think they have a long-term career in Republican politics. I hope they are haunted in their dreams and their waking moments by how morally corrupt these goons are.
Trump almost sent a tweet saying all US troops' family members would be evacuated from S. Korea...
