WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange says to leave London embassy 'soon'

LONDON | Mon Aug 18, 2014 5:10am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who has spent over two years inside Ecuador's London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden, said on Monday he planned to leave the building "soon", without giving further details.

Britain's Sky News, part owned by Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox, had earlier reported that Assange was considering leaving the embassy due to deteriorating health.

"I am leaving the embassy soon ... but perhaps not for the reasons that Murdoch press and Sky news are saying at the moment," he told reporters at the embassy in central London, before refusing to clarify his comments.

Asked about his health, Assange said anyone would be affected by spending two years in a building with no outside areas or direct sunlight, a complaint he has made several times before.

Iraqi Forces Reclaim Control of Mosul Dam

@AP: BREAKING: Iraq state TV says Iraqi forces, Kurdish troops have retaken strategic Mosul dam from Islamic militants.

IRAQI FORCES RECLAIM CONTROL OF MOSUL DAM

Aug. 18, 2014 4:50 AM EDT

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's army spokesman says security forces and Kurdish fighters have taken back the strategic Mosul Dam, the country's largest, from Islamic militants who captured it less than two weeks ago.

Lt. Gen. Qassim al-Moussawi told The Associated Press that Kurdish peshmerga forces and Iraqi anti-terrorism troops retook the dam on Monday.

Al-Mousawi says the troops were backed by aerial support but he didn't specify whether there were U.S. airstrikes during the battle. Iraqi state TV also reported the capture.

Iraq's recapturing of the entire Mosul Dam complex on the Tigris River and the territory surrounding its reservoir is a significant victory against the Islamic State group, which seized large swaths of northern and western Iraq this summer.

National Guard called in after second night of chaos in Ferguson, Missouri

FERGUSON MISSOURI | Mon Aug 18, 2014 6:05am EDT

By Ellen Wulfhorst

FERGUSON Missouri (Reuters) - Missouri's governor said on Monday he would send the National Guard into the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson to restore calm after authorities forcibly dispersed a crowd protesting last week's fatal shooting of an unarmed black teen by police.

Gov. Jay Nixon signed an executive order deploying the U.S. state militia, saying demonstrators had thrown Molotov cocktails and shot at police as well as a civilian, a description of the night's events diverging widely from some eyewitness accounts.

“Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk," Nixon said in a statement on his website.

At around dusk on Sunday, hundreds of protesters in Ferguson including families with young children fled to safety after police wearing gas masks and body armor fired tear gas and smoke canisters to scatter them hours ahead of the curfew.

"The smoke bombs were completely unprovoked," said Anthony Ellis, 45. "It (the protest) was led by kids on bikes. Next you know they're saying, 'Go home, Go home!'"

The Missouri Highway Patrol said "aggressors" were trying to infiltrate a law enforcement command post and that armored vehicles were deployed to ensure public safety.

"We ordered them back. We ordered them back again. After several attempts, we utilized the smoke to disperse these individuals," said Highway Patrol Corporal Justin Wheetley.

State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson told a late night news briefing: "Molotov cocktails were thrown, there were shootings, looting, vandalism and other acts of violence that clearly appear not to have been spontaneous."

Executive Order 14-09
Gov. Jay Nixon has signed an executive order directing additional resources through the Missouri National Guard to help restore peace and order and to protect the citizens of Ferguson.

“Tonight, a day of hope, prayers, and peaceful protests was marred by the violent criminal acts of an organized and growing number of individuals, many from outside the community and state, whose actions are putting the residents and businesses of Ferguson at risk. I join the people of Ferguson, and all Missourians, in strongly condemning this criminal activity that included firing upon law enforcement officers, shooting a civilian, throwing Molotov cocktails, looting, and a coordinated attempt to block roads and overrun the Unified Command Center. These violent acts are a disservice to the family of Michael Brown and his memory, and to the people of this community who yearn for justice to be served, and to feel safe in their own homes. Given these deliberate, coordinated and intensifying violent attacks on lives and property in Ferguson, I am directing the highly capable men and women of the Missouri National Guard to assist Colonel Ron Replogle and the Unified Command in restoring peace and order to this community.”

Eric Holder Orders Federal Medical Examiner To Take Another Look At Ferguson, Missouri Teen's Death

In addition to state-performed medical examination, Attorney General Eric Holder is ordering federal autopsy be performed at request of Michael Brown's family - @brianefallon

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has taken another step in his investigation into the shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, whose death has led to fierce protests in the relatively small city of Ferguson, Missouri.

Holder's office released a statement Sunday morning declaring the "extraordinary circumstances" involved in the case have caused him to order Justice Department officials to perform a second autopsy by a federal medical examiner.

"Due to the extraordinary circumstances involved in this case and at the request of the Brown family, Attorney General Holder has instructed Justice Department officials to arrange for an additional autopsy to be performed by a federal medical examiner. This independent examination will take place as soon as possible," the statement said.

The St. Louis County Medical Examiner's office has already examined Brown's body, which concluded the young African-American teen had died of gunshot wounds after his encounter with the police just over one week ago. The local community has rallied since the death, alleging police bias amid an aggressive crackdown on the demonstrations.

Facing KISS Boycott, Gene Simmons Apologizes for Telling Depressed People to Die Already

When Nikki Sixx has a firm foothold on the moral high-ground, you know you've messed up

After Nikki Sixx and most sentient beings aware of the controversy slammed Gene Simmons for disparaging comments he made about depression and suicide, the loud-mouthed KISS frontman took to Facebook to issue a formal apology late this afternoon. It's also worth noting that at least one radio station called for a boycott of all things related to the band as a result of the initial comments, as Death and Taxes reports.

"To the extent my comments reported by the media speak of depression, I was wrong and in the spur of the moment made remarks that in hindsight were made without regard for those who truly suffer the struggles of depression," the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (or someone representing him) wrote. This was not the first spot of controversy he faced this week. "I sincerely apologize to those who were offended by my comments. I recognize that depression is very serious and very sad when it happens to anyone, especially loved ones."

Simmons upset people when, in an interview with SongFacts.com on July 31, the rocker said things like: "I don't get along with anybody who's a drug addict and has a dark cloud over their head and sees themselves as a victim," and, "For a putz 20-year-old kid to say, 'I'm depressed, I live in Seattle.' Fuck you, then kill yourself." The subsequent death of Robin Williams served as a grim reminder as to just how irresponsible such words are.

According to Rolling Stone, Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx took Simmons to task for the comments on his Sirius radio show this week. "It's pretty moronic because he thinks everybody listens to him," Sixx said, "[and] that he is the God of Thunder." Weirdly, Simmons had tweeted out a kind remembrance about Williams on August 11 ("R.I.P. Robin Williams. A kind and generous man.&quot that was deleted at some point on Friday, August 15.

Mo'Ne Davis becomes first girl to throw a shutout in LLWS

BY SI WIRE

Mo'Ne Davis dominated in her team's opening game in the Little League World Series on Friday, becoming the first girl to throw a shutout in LLWS history. Davis' Philadelphia team - the Taney Dragons - beat a Tennessee team 4-0, and she struck out eight batters.

Davis is the 18th girl to play in the Little League World Series but the first to throw a shutout. She also threw a shutout in the Mid-Atlantic Final win that sent her team to the LLWS. She was hitting 70 mph with her fastball and allowed just two hits.

Earlier in the week, Davis challenged Dodgers All-Star Clayton Kershaw to a pitch-off, which he accepted.

BREAKING: TX Gov. Rick Perry Indicted for Abuse of Power Over Threat to Veto Prosecutors' Funding

@AP: BREAKING: Texas Gov. Rick Perry indicted for abuse of power over threat to veto prosecutors' funding.

TEXAS' PERRY INDICTED FOR COERCION FOR VETO THREAT

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been indicted for abuse of power after carrying out a threat to veto funding for state public corruption prosecutors.

The Republican governor is accused of abusing his official powers by publicly promising to veto $7.5 million for the state public integrity unit at the Travis County District Attorney's office. He was indicted by an Austin grand jury Friday.

Perry said he'd veto the funding if the district attorney, Rosemary Lehmberg, didn't resign. Lehmberg had recently been convicted of drunken driving. The state's Public Integrity Unit operates out of her office.

When Lehmberg refused, Perry carried out his veto, drawing an ethics complaint.
