Opponents flooding marriage survey

Opponents of same-sex marriage are flooding the House of Representatives’ survey on the marriage equality bills before Parliament, while the Senate has published more of the submissions to its inquiry into the issue.

Sixty-five percent of respondents to the House of Representatives survey, which was set up by Greens MP Adam Bandt and asks people whether they are in favour of or opposed to the bills and their reasons why, oppose marriage equality. The tally of published submissions from the Senate inquiry is running at 43 against and 31 for.

Some of those opposing marriage equality claimed that same-sex couples should not be allowed to marry because they can’t have children, or would have too many children, or could potentially molest their own children.

“The risk of homosexual abuse, where a boy is being raised by two homosexual men, should give any reasonable person pause for thought,” Graham and Carol Phillips wrote.

‘God Hates Fags’ Church Preparing Ad for Limbaugh Show

‘God Hates Fags’ Church Preparing Ad for Limbaugh Show

Guess who’s knocking on Rush Limbaugh’s door as his advertisers flee like rats from a sinking ship? It’s the people behind the infamous GodHatesFags website — the Westboro Baptist Church, the most notorious gay-bashing group in America — and they’re ready to step in to keep the embattled Limbaugh on the air.

“As a matter of fact, I can confirm that,” Westboro spokesman Steve Drain told Hatewatch today when asked if the church was seeking to advertise on “The Rush Limbaugh Show.” “We’re preparing our first ad at this very moment, and we’ll have a 30-second radio spot ready to go by Friday.”

Drain said he has been in contact with ad executives, but added that the Westboro spots will have to be produced before they are accepted or rejected. The radio ads would be posted as audio links Friday on the church’s websites, the Westboro spokesman said.

Clear Channel Communications, which owns Premiere Radio Networks, the distributor of Limbaugh’s program, did not return telephone calls or an E-mail seeking comment today. The program airs coast to coast for three hours a day, has about 13 million listeners, and is highly lucrative for Clear Channel.

Zimbabwe senator asks for ‘sex gadgets’ to stop prisoners turning gay

A Zimbabwean senator has suggested giving prisoners sex toys to curb gay impulses while they are behind bars.

Sithembile Mlotshwa, concerned that men incarcerated by Zimbabwe’s justice system do not turn gay, has told a parliamentary committee “sex gadgets” and special rooms would help them stay straight, the Metro reports.

She said: “In other countries they provide sex gadgets and have constructed rooms where people go and service themselves when the desire arises.”

Another minister suggested it might be hard to secure funding for sex toys and special rooms when they were struggling to feed inmates.

She replied: “We can’t say we don’t have the money to feed them as people can stay without food. They want sexual desires to be satisfied whether you like it or not.”

Sithembile Mlotshwa also suggested special rooms for prisoners to satisfy themselves

Judge deals death blow to copyright troll Righthaven

Righthaven LLC., a law firm that became known as a “copyright troll” for filing hundreds of lawsuits against media companies and bloggers, was forever banished from its business model on Tuesday by a judge who ordered a transfer of all their copyrights to settle the company’s substantial debts.

After a series of stinging legal defeats last year, Righthaven found itself owing defendants more than $200,000 for their frivolous lawsuits. That was quite enough for U.S. District Judge Philip M. Pro, who ordered the company on Tuesday to forfeit all its intellectual property, which will be sold at auction.

For about a year Righthaven’s business model was a success: they would find a news website or blog that had republished snippets of a copyrighted news story that they had purchased rights to or represented, then file a lawsuit threatening up to $150,000 in penalties for every alleged infringement. Because the punitive damages are so hefty, most early defendants settled for much smaller sums, usually several thousand dollars.

But that all changed after they went after liberal news forum Democratic Underground, which they sued in Sept. 2010 over a five sentence news excerpt from The Las Vegas Review Journal, posted in the forum for readers to comment on.

What nobody is talking about: Limbaugh and The GOP picked a fight with Big Pharma

Birth control isn't something cooked-up by little old women in their kitchens as a free treat for the neighborhood kids.

There is a powerful industry with a large financial interest in selling their product to more customers.

Psychic Prediction: Rush Limbaugh’s Advertisers Will Be Back

Psychic Prediction: Rush Limbaugh’s Advertisers Will Be Back
Posted on March 5, 2012 by Brian Dunning

<snip>

In the wake of yet another outpouring of popular furor over Rush Limbaugh’s offensive comments, advertisers including AOL, Sleep Number, The Sleep Train, Citrix, LegalZoom, QuickenLoans, and Carbonite, have pulled their advertising from his show. My psychic prediction is that within a month or two, they’ll all be back. Quote me on this.

It does not really require psychic powers. My job is to be skeptical of things, and among those things I’m skeptical about are media press releases. Their purpose is to garner attention, not to act in the public interest. These companies announced that they’re dropping their advertising because they want to be seen in a positive light. I’ll grant that the people at those companies may well be genuinely offended and want to do the right thing, but that’s not why decisions get made the entertainment industry when there is a lot of money at stake. I don’t know how Rush’s comments (which, by my understanding of his show, are scarcely more offensive or shocking than many of his shows) first made headlines, but my bet is that the show’s own people promoted them to get the attention.

Show business thrives on such attention — not on good will or happy thoughts. The old saying that there’s no such thing as bad PR is proven right far more often than it’s proven wrong. I don’t have the numbers on hand, but I’ll bet you anything you want that Rush Limbaugh’s listenership has been up this week. His tone is the reason that his regular listeners tune in, and anytime he’s on the front page of every newspaper and news website in the country (like this week) he’s going to have a rash of new listeners tuning in to see what all the hubbub is about.

The Rush Limbaugh show is, by a strong margin, the #1 radio show in the country. Advertisers do not let a property like that go to waste. They’ll be back after everyone’s forgotten this week’s offense.

Let's hope he is wrong.
