Pennsylvania to get first openly gay state legislator

Brian Sims tonight has won a decisive Democratic primary in his Philadelphia district and will become Pennsylvania’s first openly gay state representative. Sims defeated a longtime incumbent to capture the Democratic nomination in the heavily Democratic District 182, and will face no Republican opponent this November.

“Tonight we’re celebrating a historic victory for Pennsylvania and for Brian,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Victory Fund, which endorsed Sims. ”LGBT Pennsylvanians will finally have a voice in their state legislature, and what a strong and unyielding voice it will be. We are thrilled for Brian, who ran a remarkable campaign.”

Sims, a former member of the Victory Campaign Board, is a distinguished policy attorney and civil rights advocate from Center City Philadelphia. The former Staff Counsel for Policy and Planning at the Philadelphia Bar Association, he recently stepped down as the President of the Board of Directors of Equality Pennsylvania.

Sims could have company in the Pennsylvania House. Another Victory-endorsed candidate, Chris Dietz, was unopposed in his Democratic primary tonight to represent District 104.

The 40 nerdiest tattoos we've ever seen.

The most logical breasts in the universe.

What better way to say to your parents and friends, "No, this isn't a phase. I care more about this computer/sci-fi saga/video game than I do unblemished skin or gainful employment. And that's going to be the case until the day I'm not allowed to be buried in a Jewish cemetery." Given how obsessed most nerds can get, and how the stuff they get obsessed about usually has really cool graphics, these tattoos make way more sense than someone getting a heart with "Mother" written on it. After all, our computers replaced the need for mothers a long time ago. Here are our 40 favorite examples of jaw-droppingly nerdy ink.

Consider us amazed, Spiderman. Also, consider us a little grossed out.

"I Was a Truther... What Brought Me Back to Reality?"

I did not write this, I am just posting it.

"I Was a Truther... What Brought Me Back to Reality?"

I would say between the summer months of 2008, and the fall of 2009 I was following the 9/11 Truth movement with some amount of reverence. I was listening to Alex Jones on a daily basis (would download his podcast and listen at work), I was a member of several internet forums including Let's Roll 9/11, Prison Planet, and the Loose Change forum. I downloaded all copies of Loose Change, Truth Rising, and Zeitgeist. At one point, I even discussed the possibility of 9/11 being an "inside job" to a few co-workers and friends.

Why did I believe? This is a question I cannot really answer. To tell you the truth, I can only hypothesize because I can't really remember what brought me to believe what the 9/11 Truth Movement believed.

Maybe it was because the movie Zeitgeist had somewhat of an impact on me. I had never heard about any of the subject matter mentioned in that movie and it felt like I was finding out about something no one else knew. After all, there are some big claims made. Such big claims set to video have a way of luring in your average YouTube viewer.

Politically, I was disenfranchised by the Bush administration and I was really amazed how Washington DC was tending to foreign affairs and the economy. Why did I vote for this guy anyway? By the end of his presidency, George Bush seemed to not really care about the economy or anything else for that matter. So I really did not care for him at that point. However, the guy was always quick to discuss matters of war and foreign conflict. It was as if the man wanted to invoke war with every nation on the planet if he could get away with it. This got me not only disgusted but there were many times I had to raise an eyebrow or two.

Defiant D'Arcy in row with Catholic hierarchy (Ireland)

Defiant D'Arcy in row with Catholic hierarchy

TODAY FM was last night backing radio presenter Ray D'Arcy in his row with the Catholic church.

A church spokesman had branded remarks by Mr D'Arcy on his programme last Friday as "grossly offensive and factually inaccurate".

Mr D'Arcy said, on air, that the Catholic church had "in many ways f**ked up this country". The radio station subsequently received a complaint from the Catholic Communications Office.

<snip>

Mr D'Arcy, who is an atheist, told listeners yesterday: "When I was referring to the Catholic church, I was referring to the hierarchy of the Catholic church, not to people like my mother, who is a devout Catholic and a great Christian. I never meant to cause offence to them. It's the hierarchy of the Catholic church who have taken offence and are demanding an apology.

I'd Marry You (Marriage Equality Song) by Ashley Jo Farmer

Support marriage equality in America and around the world. It's the RIGHT thing to do, and the only fair thing to do. We live in a country that celebrates Equality. Make a difference for yourself, your neighbor, and your children.

Singer/Songwriter Ashley Jo Farmer is a happily-married heterosexual Christian woman who supports Marriage Equality for ALL AMERICANS.

The song "I'd Marry You" is a love story between two women - Kelly & Jill, who build a happy, successful life together but, because they are a gay couple, cannot get married. The first verse briefly touches on the insecurity and solitude that a God-loving gay girl feels in her childhood, but quickly goes on to celebrate her overcoming those fears and opening her heart to love as an adult. The chorus of the song emphasizes the feelings of the gay girl, while the bridge of the song emphasizes my own personal feelings on the subject. The last verse of the song celebrates the success and happiness that a homosexual couple can achieve when they make a family together, and the song ends with the chorus reminding us again of the injustice that exists with our current law.

Catholic Cardinal Says Adam and Eve Didn’t Exist

Catholic Cardinal Says Adam and Eve Didn’t Exist

(Yahoo News) In comments that may shock some staunch Catholics, Cardinal George Pell has described the biblical story of Adam and Eve as a myth.

He appeared alongside renowned evolutionary biologist and atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins, on the ABC’s Q&A program last night.

Cardinal Pell said the existence of Adam and Eve was not a matter of science but rather a mythological account.

“It’s a very sophisticated mythology to try to explain the evil and the suffering in the world,” he said.

“It’s a religious story told for religious purposes.”
